Is this "jon katz" a real person or one of those marketing produced talking heads? =)
They butchered the orignal script so badly why bother to expect a good movie? "Let's make it more like lethal weapon 3. Lara needs a man! and chris rock as a sidekick, and stone monkeys, and..."
* I know I'm not posting anon
* I have no idea about how or why the game market works with resellerproduction realtions.
* You can't add extra cost of a reseller to pass this discount on to the LUGs. ( common sense )
You have the value add of bundles with SMAC. Perhaps you should seek to replace Ditigal River as Loki's online sells partner. They're are many people displeased with DR, and it could help both companies from a PR standpoint.
Maybe you should try forming a better partnership with various companies and look into selling|sponsoring other commerical entertianment software like dvd players.
Just buy used cds and vcds, like I do - that way you're not supporting MPAA and the RIAA. They can't bitch when you own the media the mp3/divx is cut from...
and stop buying those crappy dvds - half the anime dvds are no better than VHS quality and for some the VCDs. VCDs have no region locks either - and are a good choice for ppl that use a tv card instead of a tv anyway.;)
They're reportedly using nonflashable roms for the bios and stripped down win2k kernel. So it's likey you can't boot linux on it until somone figures out how to make kind of a loadlin+freebios binary or even a new rom for it.
So don't buy one expecting running linux on on it.
Why should we do free work from M$? Seriously, if they want to add value to their products, then they should pay their coders to do it.
Microsoft never did anything for me, but cause trouble. You want to hear about MS and an OEM locked apple, linux, and even win32 netscape out of some of our campus labs? How about all the defamation and hellfire they direct to open source.
Microsoft already recycled the BSD TCP stack for windows 2000 and various other 'open source' projects like keb' into windows. Haven't we given microsoft enough code? Sure some projects barrow ideas, but you can't patent vague ideas unless you're an internet startup or... well, M$ =)
I *tried installing BeOS on some 586 laptops once. Oh my god, it never supported any hardware that was old or moblie -- much less both. I was never impressed with BeOS on my workstation either.
As for opening the source to BeOS it would be worthless. You couldn't use very much of it with linux or BSD without just using it as a guide. (ie using the windowing system code for a window manger.)
What I want to see is Mac OSX ported to x86. FreeBSD has lots of drivers already. Also apple is too dependent on motorola and ibm for cpus as it is... they need to branch out into new markets. I'm sure you can convert MS users to OSX with a small marketing team. Once it has native MS office steve can get bill back after all these years. Are you listening, Steven? =)
One thing is network transparent applications, and another is run twice as much software since I can run your apps as well. Also, my SMP isn't locked to a set number of cpus via a marketing team. ^_^
1. Redhat isn't linux.
2. You never install OS at work you image.
3. When you rely on signed packages and
autoupdates, then false positives will
screw you. ( Remember MS has yet to
patch the bad verisign certs for users. )
4. You shouldn't manage the computer you
have a qualified IT staff for that. I can
setup debian with wine and sawmill to run
all the apps our win2k install runs with
the same GUI.
5. Distrobutions of linux are as tight as
default OpenBSD - and you can run scripts
to secure most common distros that aren't.
6. WINE has no effect on linux security as it's
a userland process.
7. There are linux apps that install with clicks
and leave a pretty kde and gnome icon for you.
I beta test them. =)
8. Windows ME shouldn't be compared to linux.
ME isn't in the same class of OS. Me is just
for people that need to run IE and do nothing
else.
9. Using X won't hurt your security on unices.
10. VBAs are the devil.
A 200Mhz MIPS is more than enough hw to write fast high poly count console games. PCs have the problem of various setups. That's why PC games might take a hit in the future vs consoles with hdds and internet play.
I'm still working on my gnutella proxy/server, and I can state for a fact that gnutella isn't anything like a web server. Gnutella's routing, query, message protocol uses packets for christ's sake. In fact the HTTP it uses to *transmit files isn't even correct but protocol standards. The only way you can use a web browser with gnutella is to use a special proxy.
My proxy is basicly a "dedicated" gnutella server + message passing for linux clients ( gtk_gnutella ) that have no server componet. If anyone wants to chat about gnutella protocol specs and extentions please email me or post here. I'm very interested in the new client's extentions to the protocol! =)
I don't know why Americans fear exotic forms of art. Don't be so xenophobic! I have a set trapeziodal prism and cubic kittens, so they can't roll off my desk and get hurt. I was going to get a conical and a half shpere kitty set, but I was afraid they would roll under the couch and get lost.
As the creator of a 3d modeler I enjoy the geometeric beauty of my perfectly cubic and trapeziodal kitties. They great for travelers as well, since they fit perfectly in carry-on boxes and they're even stackable! The kids enjoy them more than legos...
"...said that the box had a potential market of 50 percent of the homes in the U.S. He said that was the number of homes that, according to industry estimates, would not already have online-enabled games consoles by 2003."

2003? So the market in terms of time for this is sometime between now and 2003? Am I missing something?
Btw, the DC is a kick ass little platform. I'm going to buy a used one and Marvel vs Capcom 2. That way I can pretend I'm in an aracde all day on my days off. If only it had a cool DBZ fighting game like and updated DBZ:SB3. =)
Since I started work on making a Gnutella client/server; I've noticed lots of bad protocol usage. ( I'm going to focus on using my server as a gnutella 'proxy' to my apche server to serve files. )
Here's a breif listing of little things that are easy to fix:
1. I've see
n TTLs set up to 256! We shouldn't forward these packets at all or at least reset the TTL to like 4.
2. New packet types should be rejected. Here's a few examples my client logged one night:
UNKNOWN FUNCTION 0x69
UNKNOWN FUNCTION 0xdb
UNKNOWN FUNCTION 0xfa
And here is an example with it's data field:
UNKNOWN FUNCTION 0x97
'^@^@^@)^Xt^Q^QH^@^@^Oj@^A^F^Z^@
^@^@R{.!^?-C"?^B22^@^@)^X'
3. Reject unsupported unicode queries until we have a standard! I know I don't serve files in japanese, so I shouldn't forward it to other clients that don't either. These queries are often 256bytes!
We might need to start a gnutella steering committee and just rethink some issues. Just fixing these 3 minor things frees up a lot of bandwidth. Also we need to use Pongs for finding new hosts more than pinging the fuck out of ppl like me that are on dail-up 50% of the time. =)
I can tell you from experence you can't get a company to release source even to old MS DOS games with out a large petition.
Also, I truely believe some games source has been lost for good and no longer exists. I'd like to have the source to Master of Magic, Arena: The Elder Scrolls, and TombRaider. I asked for source for all these, but you don't see linux versions now do you. =)
I started a TR clone engine - but that got boring quick, as I didn't like the game much to begin with.
It takes a movement and good timing to get game source.
tan, you old silly =)

Come on guys - I don't even use windows but 3 times a week and I know that.

Then don't buy from Digital River -- buy from tuxgames or one of the other resellers. Loki's online store isn't run by Loki.
Loki isn't open source - they're closed source on commerical games. The only open source they do are development tools.
I of the future... I come for you... sarah conner...

why bother with pcs? (posted via DC -using joystick no less) =)
From cnbc.com:
Price: 25.21 (-28.68%) 1:34pm ET
Range: 25.0 - 35.73
Vol : 14,973,400
P/E : 86.931
Me thinks rambus is due to die... a P/E that high is laughable in light of possible loss of main source of revenue. =)
If you just want to edit/convert certian game formats it's okie. Even the widgets are GL rendered.

How about firing your security team and hiring some monkeys to patch the damn servers?
