  1. No Dr. Bott tests? on Tom's Hardware KVM Roundup · · Score: 1

I have several Dr. Bott USB KVM switches at work and have never in two years had any issues with them, working with both and 4-port in the server area and an 8-port in my office. I even have PCs running linux on the same switch with several Macs, never any problems. They are a tad pricey ($399 for the 8-port) but are worth every penny.

Hell, they even have a switch for 2 montitors on 4 computers!

Finder customization didn't make it publically until Mac OS X Public beta (Sep 2000), it wasnt even in Mac OS X DP4 which shipped in May of 2000. IE 5 for Mac shipped a few months prior to that and was even included as a carbon app on the developer disc.

No, that movie was made with Final Cut and other help. No, its not possible to capture DVDs (with Apple tools) on Mac OS X. Also to note are that Grab.app as well as CMD-Shift 3/4 will not screengrab while the DVD Player is open.

I worked hard on those movies and appreciate the compliments, though.

The main inspiration the writer used was the fact that he was mugged. That instant feeling of hate, anger, and fear he felt those first 15 minutes. He said he wondered what if... what if that feeling never went away. What if that was your motivation to find the perp...

Ive also heard that at film festivals (this movie has been finished and played overseas for almost a year) that many major studios went up to the actors and told them what a brilliant film it was. When asked if they would pick it up for American distribution, the comments always went along the line of "This movie is too complex for the American audience". Guess these are the same guys who told Soderberg that noone would go see Traffic.

And for a shameless plug to the trailer I did, find it here. You'll need QuickTime, and yes, I am a company man.

Ok, maybe thats not the core, but the chewy goodness on the outside. Other thing of note is that the Mac OS X team is mostly comprised of NeXTStep engineers... who had NeXT running on PA-Risc, Motorola, and Intel. X will ship March 24th, guarenteed. $129 includes 3 CD's. Mac OS 9.1, Mac OS X, and Mac OS X Developer tools.

It isnt QuickTime Streaming. First, the delivery is via http, not rtsp. Second, there are no hinted tracks in the QuickTime file itself. A file that has been streaming will only contain a "Streaming track". Regular QuickTime files have a video track and an audio track. This information is in the "Get info" menu option.

The ability to save a QuickTime file from a site comes via 3 methods. First is paying for QuicKTime Pro and using the "Save as" button on the controller bar. Second is to hunt the exact URL for the file and "Save as" via the browers. Third is to hunt for recently created .mov files in your browser cache.

Lastly, the "Click here to play movie." is actually.... a QuickTime movie itself! Its in the embed tag and clicking on it points to the actual QuickTime File.

  23. Digital Toy Story 2 rocked on Digital Movie Projection: Can It Live Up To The Hype? · · Score: 1

Yes, Ive seen both versions of Toy Story 2. As luck has it I live less than a mile from Cinemark @ Legacy in Plano Texas, one of six digital theaters in the nation. I went to see Toy Story 2 for the second time this past weekend and made sure to check out the DLP version. The digital version of TS 2 was awesome. It certainly does make a difference but.... TS 2 was all digital to begin with. I honestly couldnt tell you if "Bridges of Madison County" would any better with DLP. There are some things I did notice about the movie and projection. First being, all scenes where crisp, colorful, and very clear. Second, the was some dithering so to speak on very small objects or text (such as credits) if you really looked. And lastly there was some sore of image all over the screen. I cant really describe it, but it looked like a very slight amount of heat from the projecter (like the heat from a barbecue, how it distorts vision when you look through it) was appearing on the screen if you looked hard enough (no, my eyeballs werent popping out).

All in all, movies like TS2 and Star Wars that are mostly or all digital will look great. Sure, its not as big a differnce as with VHS and DVD, but it is a step forward, and face it... we will be going there.

With all that said, my final thoughts on it are... cool, maybe I wont even have to watch the film boy melt the film 4 times during the first run of X-Files ever again, so much so I had to see it in another theater so other day. Cheers, Chad

  25. I remember these. on Super Shielded PC Cases · · Score: 1

When I went to Naval Intellegence school in 1992 these cases were everywhere. Even the MFM and Floppy disk cables had a thick mesh around them. We had to disassemble a few dozen for scrap, took us all day. They were mostly designed to meet standards for electronic emmissions for computers at sea. The requirements these days are much less strict. As for the 8088 processor, thats about right, although I can recall a few retrofitted with 386 upgrades. We ran Zenix on the 386's using a thick coax lan, and the system was designated "PC NIPS" for Naval Intelligence Processing Systems.
