I won't really get into the who SCSI/IDE debate, suffice to say Apple announced a Fibre Raid with 400MB through put, it you really want it. Shipping in Q4 with 1.48 TB of space in a 3U, all hot swappable. The Apple prices are spot on for all the features they bring. IMHO of course.

Yes, there are several programs that do this. SwapDV is probably the most prominent tool, Replayer is another, and a third is ReplayPC.

SwapDV lets you pull shows from your ReplayTV and can even show up on your UPnP network as another Replay box to stream shows from, acting as a nice backup. Users can also burn the MPEGs to CDs and DVDs or swap them with P2P clients. Gnutella integration is coming also from what I understand.

As a ReplayTV 4000 owner and operator of Planet Replay a content 'borrowing' site, Im appalled by all of this. But one has to wonder - SB made sharing only possible through the use of unique internet IDs and their servers to translate and initiate the P2P. If the P2P didn't require their server, there would not be any way for them to track what we do as easily as they can now.

I'm glad SB is not just rolling over though. Just like Diamond Rio and the MP3 player suit, the Digital PVR suit needs to hit courts and law set, good or bad. People keep referring back to the Sony timeshifting case, but the problem list that was analog, this is digital. It needs to go to court and get settled, but having SB collect evidence for the plantiffs is just ridiculus.

We're failing to even be a consideration with a huge portion of the market. I have my own opinions on the matter and Im sure many others do as well.

I have PC 133 in my Mac now. Oh yes, they have this wonderful card (yes I know you'd have to pay for it) called the Acard 6880-M. It ran me about 159 for the card and I bought 2 ata133 Maxtors and lemme tell you... these things are fast. I get about 160 throughput in benchmarks. Its a hardware based raid card, so it works in OS 9 and OS X perfectly. I only wish they'd fix the rom so it would sleep and spin down the disks. I have 220 gig across 4 drives and its pretty sweet. Even if they move to 133, I'd still move this card over for the RAID aspects.

You make some great points, and my initial post was a bit misleading on my part in regards to Napster. But I will point out some things.

It is faster to time shift and send a show via VCR and snail mail. Thats a fact for 90% of us ReplayTV users. Im currently receiving a show now thats 1.5 GB for 1/2 hour. With cable modem upload speeds and being able to send more than one show at a time it will take over 4 days for me to receive this file. I can't even pull down 2 shows at once (a bit silly, you can send many at 128k up, but only receive one at 1.5m down). Ive had my RTV for 3 months now and have received exactly 2 shows.

I'd also like to theorize a bit for the future. Even when broadband gets faster (say 2-3 years), TV still has the upper hand by only broadcasting in HDTV. Now that 1.5GB file is 15GB and we're all back to waiting 4-7 days for the episode of Sex and the City.

Commercial Advance is great when it works, its my favorite feature. But its such a pain in the butt when it doesn't. Ive had it skip portions of a show without my knowledge.

There have been some great responses to my post, thanks to everyone, its been an interesting read.

I was interviewed for this article last week and I was sorely disappointed to read how sensationalistic is was towards sharing shows with the ReplayTV 4000 likening us to Napster. Napster traded what was known copyrighted material, bought by home users and illegally copied and sent to others. RTV on the other hand is basically a digital VCR, or timeshifting device. It is currently legal to timeshift, send to friends, and receive shows this way. No different than user a standard VCR and even slower depending on file size. The biggest complainers should be advertisers who pay big money to be on Friends. But really,I don't agree with that either. They take a chance that I will see there ad anyways. There is nothing preventing me with regular TV to just leave the room or turn off the TV when ads come on.

Check out my site Planet Replay for more information on Replay show sharing.

  24. Re:Can't transfer MP3s? on Slashback: Drives, Pods, OEMs · · Score: 1

Your comments aren't entirely correct either. iPod knows which Mac is its 'home' Mac and will only auto sync with it. When you move it to a new one you can change its 'home' or manually move songs *through iTunes only*. It just doesnt automatically over write the MP3s.

Copying files in Hard Disk mode will not only be unrecognizable to the iPod, but iTunes as well.

"Manually managing your files" is only done via iTunes 2 similar to what you can currently do with USB MP3 players.

Ive seen some speculations here, so just to point out a few things. iPod uses HFS+ and will most likely only be able to read HFS plus as well as iTunes databases. The music files are 'hidden", and can not be seen in hard disk mode (except via command line). It wont ship with any PC or Linux drivers, so the people that want one should start thinking of good hacks now.... how to read and write HFS+, write to iTunes databases, and the file folder structures.
