  1. interesting ramifications on images.google.com · · Score: 2

I've been wanting to write an open sourced image search engine for a long time, I guess that now I can just try to join the google team.

One idea that I had was to use optical character recognition (like many scanners do) to pull out possible words... much like the portrayal of Neo when he was searching for Morpheus.

This is a technology that can widely expand the usefulness of searching tools, but can also invade people's privacy. Let's say that your local paper publishes your photo... now anyone in the world can see what you look like.

Sure there is... when you go out to purchase something, remember that you're really voting with your wallet.

When you choose a political candidate, what process do you go through first? Consider their beleifs, their positions, their record, try to extrapolate over time whether they're poised to fuck you over, or help you out. Then you vote.

We need to be doing the same thing with products in the commercial markerplace. Instead of simply doing a price comparison (evil company and nice company sell the same product, evil company charges $2 less) don't go with the evil company. Do a little background research and find out which companies are screwing over consumers, their workers, the environment (which really means everyone including themselves).

That depends on how well thought-out your method of protection is. Imagine if someone were to put a screen door on a submarine, then submegered. Who is at fault here - the water for breaking through the door? or the dumbass who fullfilled the cliché?

Nope, you wouldn't have necessarily lost money, but perhaps that party gained money from your work without following the license. So this is similar to the RIAA's complaints that you haven't necessarily emptied a record store of it's inventory, but by duplicating copyrighted material that they lose on sales. Your corollary would be that they worked with your code, and didn't pay you back by releasing their changes.

I could see suing for a fair chunk of their revenue from that product, and forcing them to releasing their changes to the code.
