  1. Why restrict it to just bunnies? on Stockholm's Bunny-Fueled Heating Plant · · Score: 1

What is it about going to the Moon that makes it worth spending $20 billion? Advances in pure mathematics aren't done for immediate benefit, they are done on the off chance that the new "discovery" might be useful some day, like non-Euclidean geometry. In this case, it was more of an incentive to develop the algorithms and computing power necessary to deal effectively with the problem space. Hopefully this provided insights into how other large, intractable problems may be solved.

As an Englishman living in Finland, surely you must realize that the reason the Nordic countries have so many attractive women is that for hundreds of years the Vikings raided the coast of England, carrying off all the attractive women they could find, and leaving only the homely ones to breed subsequent generations of Englishmen like you. As far as the not being fat, that is generally true wherever walking/biking/skiing everywhere you go rather than driving a car is a cultural norm; I've noticed this in Amsterdam as well. What do you call a fat person in Amsterdam? A tourist.

Email is different from a swinging fist. You have to actively take action (click on the email) to read it. Just like complaining about the crap on slashdot -- if you don't like it, why are you reading it? Bitching about "being forced to read email" is like the old lady who complained about her neighbors nude sunbathing when she could only see them when she leaned out her window and used binoculars! Nobody is forcing you to read the email; if you don't have the force of will to delete it without reading it first, it sounds like you've got serious issues, not the sender.

But, if I can download the cover art and song lyrics in electronic form for free from the internet, why should I care if they are included with the music purchase? Are they including a unique identifier somewhere in this "added value" content, so they can track piracy? It doesn't provide any value to me as a consumer, so it must be providing some value to the (increasingly inaccurately named) record company.

I've made the same argument about people complaining about being harassed via email; as long as the sender is using a valid source email address already known to the receiver, it can only be harassment if the receiver is too stupid to block that source address! So about the time you tell someone "Please stop sending me email", the only reason you wouldn't go ahead and block that address is if you are being a dick and just looking for an excuse to cause trouble for someone else.

Remember: headhunters are people that were judged too unethical to become used car salesmen! (I once had a headhunter hand me $1000 cash in an unmarked envelope to quit the job I'd just started and take another position that he had been working on but taken to long. I also had a head hunter promise me per diem for taking a job 70 miles from home, then when the first paycheck arrived say "We changed our mind... didn't we tell you?") You work with many headhunters at once, and use whatever headhunter can get into a paying position the quickest at the highest salary rate. I've never used the same contracting company for two positions in a row, although I have used the same contracting company multiple times. One more warning: just because a company tells you that you have a start date, doesn't mean you have a job. I had a contracting firm get me a job at Intel and give me a start date, insist that I give notice at the old contract which was not complete, then days before the start date tell me "Sorry, Intel Finance department didn't approve funding for the position." Fortunately, I was able to scramble and land a different position at Intel through a different contracting company, but the company that promised me the non-existent position was then pissed off at me for not sticking around for several weeks (unemployed) on the off chance that they could convince Intel to change their mind. In my experience, H. L. Yoh has been the least slimy as headhunters go, but I still don't trust them simply because they are headhunters after all.

I did, several times in fact, before I gave up and took it to an independent repair shop. Great strategy for reducing the number of units sent back for repair under warranty, not so good strategy for encouraging repeat business. The Ringworld series is classic, but I think Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land is a great commentary on Religion, while The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is better social and political commentary than Starship Trooper (although I concur with Heinlein's idea of requiring service for full citizenship).
