    Don't be ridiculous. Any true geek would know that the command should be:

    voice +1-555-1212 -ntwk verizon -prot GSM -ssh-version 2 -a -l -q -9 -b -k -K 14 -x

    The oil drillers believe in science as long as it supports their worldview. That is, drilling for more oil. As soon as a scientific finding conflicts with what they want, however, you can bet said belief wavers considerably.

    Most big dams are installed for flood control. That they simplify irrigation is a nice side benefit.

    That may be the case where you live but here in the the western U.S., the majority of dams have been built for water storage purposes, followed in number by dams built for generation of hydropower. Relatively few have been built exclusively for flood control; I can think of a couple in the Los Angeles area and that's about it.

    Apple charges $100 for that "first hit" (the SDK). You have to pay them money for the privilege of developing an application

    That's not quite accurate. The SDK is available after a free registration at Apple's iPhone Developer site. I got a copy just out of curiosity even though I'm not a developer.

    You do have pay them their ninety-nine dollah if you want to distribute your software through the App Store, though.

    Imagine a few restaurants. Linux, Apple, and Microsoft.

    Your analogy falls down in one important aspect, namely that software is not a consumable. That is, it does not get used up and turned into waste. This allows Apple to contribute it's spiced-up product back to your allegorical food bank so others can benefit from it.

    Macs are already fairly priced if you compare them to a similarly configured PC. But if what you actually mean by "fair price" is a cheap computer, then you're probably out of luck.

    Sigh, not this one again. Apple will likely not ever make an inexpensive mini tower because the profit margins are too small. Their strategy is to aim at the high end of the market and let Dell and HP fight it out over the market for cheap computers.
