how much are you willing to pay? i haven't owned a car for 3 years, i haven't driven for 4. i commute to work on my bicycle, even through the shitty midwestern winters. my commute is around the average 3.5 miles. but i have coworkers that live closer that still drive.
the time to change your lifestyle is NOW. you can't wait for a 'lifestyle change' month. you have to take an active roll in doing something. we've been told that the gas is running out. do you want to wait until someone says that 'we have 18 hours worth of gas left on the planet' before you change? would that give you enough time? move your home closer to your office. move your home closer to your shops. you are making arguments that have solutions, but that involve a 'change in lifestyle'. what is stopping you?
i nearly get eaten every morning by some soccer-mom-on-her-phone laden SUV that will never see dirt, or even gravel. it should be illegal to own these vehicles unless you can prove a need: you live in an area that REQUIRES it, you have a job that REQUIRES it. they should not be the new station wagon.

how many joe sixpack users acutally buy an operating system, or even install one? they use what comes with the computer. i don't see too many people buying these to run windows on. why would you buy an integrated machine to rip out some of the best parts?
I, for one, want a generic OSX that i can run on my AMD box. I just want apple to say on the box "tested with this hardware..." so i can build my own.
who the hell wants just a phone? i need ALL of my devices converged into one. i want to be able to be jamming out to my mp3s and immediately pick up a call when my phone rings. then i could be jamming out to my mp3s while gaming with the guy next to me on the subway, only the game drops when my phone rings. then, while i am gaming and jamming out to my mp3s, the game could drop while a popup tells me what the weather is, and what the stock market is doing. then a dozen click-thrus to tell me what is new on slashdot, how to 3n14rg3 my p3n1s, and where i can get viagra from some nigerian bankers. all without ever leaving the comfort of my phone. then my phone rings and it is paris hilton with some new sex pic JUST for me. then my phone drops to tell me there is a new song available on ITMS, which it automatically purchases for me and bills to my credit card.
but then i have an emergency call to make, lets say the subway i was on was hijacked by terra-ists and driven into a building. i need to make a call to get the word out to the liberal right wing media. but i have to "listen to this extra special offer" first, before my call would connect.

Why not? Why can't it just say on the OS X box "Apple Supports this list of hardware" beyond that no support, you are on your own, RTFM, head to the forums, goodluck and godspeed.

apple may not be able to control exactly which hardware is used but they can limit the support to a small subset of all hardware.
i've tinkered with linux to get my stuff working. i would have no problems tinkering with OSX to get it working.
is there anything wrong with doing one thing and doing it very, very well? well google more than one thing, but their core is searching the web, very VERY well. they at least have some focus. Microsoft has no focus other than to dominate everything they can. throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. "We will do everything, better than anyone else!"
