    Yeah I'm only speaking on their consumer products - I have no experience on their other stuff like pro video.

    It has always been, in my dictionary, SONY mean good quality and buy-with-confidence. Now that I remember my first 'wtf' with SONY is when compact flash was out along with MemoryStick - Sony digital cameras were good but heck, I cannot allow myself get stuck with only their product with the memory that's pretty much not compatible with anything else.

    Regarding digital restrictions management. ....It is nothing short of treating people as criminals before they commit the crime. Inocent until proven guilty indeed!


    You can say the same thing about the use of keys, magnetic strips, receipts, password and such.

    $20 - That'll be way too much money. Think of an additional TV channel doesn't cost more than $10. It's on-demand but still.... OTOH considering what kind of video/audio quality they're going to give is another big factor.

    When there is a gap for new programs, they will be created. When someone needs to get a task done and there isn't a tool, he will scratch that itch - eventually, if enough people have the itch it becomes widespread. I also have no idea where he is coming from about this release gap between windows and linux, unless we're talking about games which is a whole other can of worms.


    I totally agree that when there's a gap for new software, a lot of time it's linux community first to address. However, in many cases it is in the Windows world that the software is productized and used in a commercial way, while the open source version takes a much longer time to be in that status.

    The author is completely forgetting to mention the sticky note with the root password that half of these companies have on the side of people's monitors because they force a password change every 3-6 months to something arbitrary.


    The extreme opposite is a 'universally' used root password that never changed. Yes it happens.

    Guys.... it's unfair if the merchant is trying to hide something but it's all fair on those lock-in contracts if stated clearly. You want a lower rate? Sign up long term, if not there's still pay-as-you-go kinda services. Gym membership for $70/month vs $50/month for 3 years? Yeah operating a gym is expensive - check out your local YMCA or go buy your own fitness equipment.

    I'm often at odds with the majority views on /., being a supporter of social-democratic economics (and hence far too statist for most /.ers), and an opponent of mass immigration, but I can't stand Bush either. I also find the government of China appalling (corrupt, authoritarian, anti-egalitarian, militaristic, anti-democratic, et al.), but this is perfectly compatible with opposition to Bush. Indeed, from my Nordic perspective, both the current American and Chinese governments are quite objectionable, though the American one is far less so in most respects.


    I wouldn't disagree about corruption and anti-democratic aspects in China, but to me the States is definitely much more militaristic than China. On top of a huge budget boost to the military in spite of huge deficit, they actually use force to get their way and what they want.

    Without having an "official" magnetic access card to duplicate, I pulled every card with a magnetic stripe from my wallet, including my bank ATM card, a credit card, and a shopping card from a major grocery store. To my surprise, the first swipe from the shopping card opened the door.


    I'm not surprised as I've also tried this maybe 10 years ago into the bank ATM machine access - with a frequent flyer card. I was thinking, how in the world would the thing verify as other banks customers can use the machine as well. Without the keypunch it probably didn't do anything other than verify it's a magnetic stripe.

    Honestly if it is $7 for all the movies, I think it's a fair price. Maybe $5? And if the MPAA really sell all stuff at much cheaper (reasonable) price, the mega moviestar takes in 1 cool million dollar instead of 10 million per movie, there's probably not much of piracy problem here.


    By the they'll save all the money they need to invest in protection/drm/root-kit and such. Though it's not the same as selling @ $15-$20 a pop, but this will make this world a much happier place :)

Moderators: 5 Insightful gotta have some credibility in it. You know what, from what I heard from a friend of a friend who worked in CIA, Cowboyneal is one of the top fugitive in the US.

    This period of changing (selling medium vs distributing digital data) will probably take a fairly long time - not until IP-based 'radio' and 'video' streaming becomes household and actually replacing the old technologies. By then the "little labels" will be more or less as competitive as the "big labels" for music/tv/movie. That's when the little guys and the big guys figured out a way to make money out of this new market place.

    I guess I can't blame Myspace completely for this phenomenon as it seems to be an attitude that is pervading our entire society: it's better to look good than actually be good. Mspace seems to reinforce that message.


    No it doesn't even look good. It's absolutely user UNFRIENDLY. OTOH, I'm still quite astounded of how many users and how active the users are in this myspace thing.

    Watch for EMC to become a dominant player in the IT market, going way beyond disk drives and data storage. These folks are making some very strategic acquisitions.


    I don't know if they'll be a dominant player beyond disk/data as they have not change much since their company inception. They better be doing something. EMC has been selling their 10+ years old product without doing much to enhance it while digital storage in general has gotten so cheap these days. They has been charging their customers a ultra-high premium just for the peace of mind that "it never goes down".
