  1. Discredit **AA? on To Media Companies, BitTorrent Implies Guilt · · Score: 1

On the other hand, it could be a useful way to trash the RIAA's credibility:

    1) Bunch of dud clients connect to torrent.
    2) Bunch of downloaders connect to torrent.
    3) Monitoring service has no way of telling which is which, unless it is actually monitoring who actually downloads stuff.
    4) It becomes really, really difficult to tell who is infringing and who isn't.

All of a sudden, we have another way to discredit RIAA/MPAA "evidence" in court. Interesting. Very, very interesting.

Started with a major software company out of college, five months ago. Salary: $95000. No, I'm not a genius, and no I'm not an exception. Five CS people (out of 10) in my graudating class were hired at the same rate by comparable companies. And before you ask, the other five aren't unemployed: they're in grad school. Not because they couldn't find anything else, but because they wanted to go.

My advice to unemployed US programmers: quit whining. If you aren't getting these jobs, you aren't qualified for them. Get your qualifications, get the experience, and compete with the best. It's what I had to do, and after watching the H1-B flamewar for the last five years, I still don't see why Americans think the global economy-- yes, it's global, accept it-- should go any easier on them than anyone else.

    >> Down from $500? You're dreaming.

Sorry, I should have been clearer on this point. I was thinking of buying a Japanese PS3 on my next trip over there and bringing it back to the US. I do most of my gaming in Japanese because US translations of Japanese games (not to put too fine a point on it) suck.

And even if I were to buy one in the US, getting a PS3 on the cheap doesn't look too difficult. Ebay has numerous postings (example) for 20GB models going for under $400.

    >> You could get a Mac mini for less. Read that again and let it sink it: it would be cheaper to run Linux on Apple hardware.

Yes, but can I play Final Fantasy XIII on the Mac Mini? Don't me wrong, the little Mini's kick ass. But they don't fit in too well with my plans for the living room: I want as few devices as possible doing as many things as possible. A PS3 fits this profile perfectly.

    >> "But it does give users the ability to swap out harddrives... News to me"

You can change the hard drives out according to this guide. All you need is a spare 2.5" laptop hard drive, several of which I have lying around the home. I am also led to believe that this doesn't even void the manufacturer's warranty.

    >> "Play all my PS2 games... So will your PS2."

But my PS2 won't play PS3 games (insert Cartman-esque "meeeeeeh"). In the medium term, there are several games i would like to play on the PS3. If I can get one console that does two console's worth of work for a small investment, I'm down with buying a PS3.

That said, you do make several valid points. I too am worried by the lack of rumble in the SIXAXIS controllers, as well as the paucity of good release titles. Like you, I will probably end up waiting until Final Fantasy and White Knight Story come out (i.e. until late this year). This should allow the Bluray/HDDVD format wars play out a bit as well.

I apologize if my original post seemed at all fanboi-ish... I was just stating the conclusions I had drawn after doing a bit of reading about the issue. I guess what they say is true: back up your conclusions or face the consequences!

  7. Interesting on Sony Fixes Back Compat Issues in PS3 Update · · Score: 3, Insightful

I know it's the mode to ridicule Sony for it's lameness on /.-- but this story (along with one I saw on Ars yesterday) is persuading me that perhaps the groupthink was too hasty to condemn the PS3.

A $320 (after potential price drop for 20Gig model) next-gen console with Blu-Ray? I was thinking of buying one just to run linux and to turn it into a MythTV "frontend" box with gaming capability... Admittedly the low end PS3 doesn't have wireless or the memory card readers, but it does give users the ability to swap out harddrives. Plus it will play all my PS2 games without too much hassle.

Like I said... maybe it doesn't suck as much as we think it does. From where I'm standing, the TCO for a next-gen console with high def capability is substantially lower for the PS3 than the XBox360.

(Yes, yes. I know there's another choice out there, but I've already got a Wii).

  19. Re:Get your financial house in order! on Resolutions for 2007? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Man oh man... this is the best post I've come across on Slashdot today. I graduated last June with $100 in my pocket, $8000 in student loans, and (after being unable to find a job for a long while), $7000 in credit card debt. Anyhow-- I managed to get a job in October, and my only aim for the last couple of months has been to pay off my debt. The credit card debt should be gone by the beginning of February, and my "zero net worth" day will come on April 7th, 2007-- the day after I get paid, and the three days before the student loans start charging interest. It shall be awesome. I'm planning on celebrating by depositing the rest of my pay for that fortnight in the 401(K) account that has been lying unused since I started my job.

I got lucky: I found a job that I like, and a boss who understands that I've got more in my life going on than work. Even so, the debt's been a huge burden over the last couple of months, and I never, ever want to have any again. I've started planning to buy a car-- but I'm going to pay for it in cash. Same goes for a house when I decide to get one. Save, and then buy. Debt is simply not the way to go, and I have explained it to the newly acquired fiancee. She seems sceptical, but I'm positive it's for the best.

I've also been logging my expenses in this little spreadsheet I made, and pruning off crap that I don't need. I actually decided to stop getting a soda with lunch for a month to see how much money I would save. $100, would you believe it? I cut out the "morning coffee" stop at starbucks, and saved another $100. The guy who said that you can live on 10% less than you do now wasn't kidding: I've found that I can live on half of what I was spending before logging and monitoring my finances.

So yes, getting out of debt and knowing _exactly_ where you stand with regards to money is one hell of a New Year's resolution. If you're only going to keep one in your life, this is the one I would suggest.
