Well I am just putting it out there, the well being of my pet is orders of magnitude more important to me than some armed invader on my property. If you show up and hurt my pet intentionally there will be no peaceful resolution, no talk. I will be doing whatever I can to take you and your guys out even if it gets me killed.
You sound like a crazy - but only because you're talking about a dog rather than a human. However if what you say is crazy, then we're both nuts.
Most males (and many females) would respond similarly to an unprovoked and unnecessary attack on their child, their own safety a distant concern. Perhaps one needs to own or have owned pets to understand. Even the word 'owner' in this context bothers me a bit.
I love my little girl; she's as much my child as any human kid and being of different species doesn't enter into the matter. I'd be right behind your actions, fully supporting your right to defend your family should you ever have the misfortune to be required to do so.
It's a valid counterexample to invalidate the principle implied by the Onterio CAS definition. If behavior A differs from behavior B in only one respect, not leaving a mark, and based on this difference A is classified as not abusive while B is considered abusive this definition rests on the principle that not leaving a mark is sufficient to distinguish abusive from non-abusive behavior.
Well, sure, if you ignore the context. The Ontario definition concerns itself with the act of spanking, that being the application of force to the buttocks; AFAIK it is not an analysis of the relative merits of the application of force to minors.
This is the context of the discussion and I think throwing in an unrelated and highly-contentious subject like waterboarding is at best unhelpful and at worst, trollish.
Sorry, where exactly does waterboarding belong in this discussion? The AC was describing the Ontario CAS definition of 'spanking' and nothing more. Way to add unnecessary hyperbole to the conversation!
Funny, I was just sitting here thinking how embarassing it is to be a Kiwi right now.
I wonder how illustrative our current 'roll over, sit up and beg' behaviour towards the US is of the suffering our various governments have felt at being largely left out in the cold by the US (a relationship only recently showing signs of warming). This was of course our own fault, having allowed domestic anti-nuclear sentiment to damage our relationship as US allies - allies being a title we have only recently regained.
It rankles being a US lap-dog. But, realistically, we need the support and it couldn't hurt for our nation to remember that the tail typically does not wag the dog.
Yeah, you'll get ad hominem when you piss people off with flippant remarks obviously not made in jest that make light of issues some of us are forced to deal with.
Nutrition is an important part of mental and physical wellbeing but I disagree with your assertion that it is The Answer plain and simple, as you state it here:
depression isn't made up shit that can be fixed with a magic diet.
Not a magic diet, proper nutrition. Neanderthal.
There you go, smacking down the poster with your own ad hominem attack - but I guess that's ok because he disagreed with you and must therefore be a troll.
Actually, my post is informative and you're simply trolling --probably because you're one of the "normal Americans" who thinks you should be able to live on factory food and fast food (or worse, a "traditional American diet") while using chemicals from Big Pharma to magically control the damage you do with your unrestricted eating.
Your post is far from Informative.
For the record, I am neither American, trolling, nor an advocate of fast food or Big Pharma.
What I am is a person who is sick of opinionated arseholes like yourself who feel they are duty-bound to arrogantly criticise other people with unscientific garbage from a position of absolute, unshakeable knowledge. I'd take you just as seriously if you were to suggest we all turn to Jesus to solve our societal problems.
You have nothing of value to contribute but you're so sure of yourself I find myself comparing your attitude to that of the religious pricks who knock on people's doors to force their faith on the 'poor uneducated and unsaved masses'.
I see comments along these lines all the time and it amazes me that we males are so desperate to hand the keys to our emotions to someone else to use and abuse as they see fit.
Try being single - it's a bit sucky for the first six months but after that the freedom becomes intoxicating and you'll forget why you ever bothered chasing skirt in the first place. I've been single for over ten years now and there's not a human being on Earth, no matter how beautiful or amazing, that I'd ever let near me. I don't see that changing in the future as I'm just too happy with my life the way it is!
Sex is important and hard-wired into our animal brains but it doesn't mean we need to hand over our cerebral cortexes lock stock and barrel.
Try it. You'd be amazed at the clarity of life lived wth a backbone and without the ever-present pussy whip.
I believe homosexual acts are a sin. I believe homosexuality should not be promoted. I oppose gay marriage.
Does this make me anti-gay? No way. Hate the sin and love the sinner. We are all children of God.
Two questions:
Do you really believe naturally-occurring homosexual activity is the exclusive domain of humans on this planet?
Why do you religious people have so much interest in other people's sex lives?
How do people on/. call you a Microsoft shill? At the risk of sounding sycophantic I don't always agree with your posts but they're always at least interesting and often quite insightful; quite the antithesis of shilling.
On-topic, I think the situation you describe must be very frustrating for Microsoft. They've proven time and again that as a one-trick pony their only tool is the brute force of their market hedgemony and their financial resources.
I take a small amount of satisfaction in that fact. It's almost like you need something more than sheer force and established momentum to succeed long term..
I remember seeing an aircraft of some sort in the daytime with a trail of fire coming out of the back of it. It was too far up to see if or what kind of wings it had. Didn't seem to be a rocket. Moved slow like a passenger jet. Never did figure out what it might have been. Was on the Northwest coast of USA.
As an ignorant layperson replying far too late to your post, my limited experience knows this phenomenon as 'Torching' - the wiki article on Fuel Dumping has a nice picture at the bottom that seems to fit your description and mine (although I've only ever seen this done in the air at shows rather than at takeoff as per the Wiki pic)
I don't doubt that Key would feltch anyone in the US for a chance at some more money. He's fucking us over every chance he gets, and smiling his way through it so we all know that Things Are Good.
True or not, I'd still rather Key to Clark, who sold out an entire country to get herself a UN seat.
You know it's the truth. Stop bitching - things aren't rosy, see the economy for an explanation. Do you really think Labour would have done a better job than National thus far?
As usual, National takes us out of a recession only for Labour to spend the gains. Just wait, it's bound to happen - we've been here so many times before...
All politicians are scumbags but Labour are incompetent scumbags and we don't need their 'help' while things are rough.
I find this really frustrating because I am trained as a scientist and I use that model to understand what I perceive. So I use scientific principles in a domain that science rejects.
Then at the risk of offending you I feel I must point out that you are demonstrating you have learned nothing significant from your scientific training.
Without meat in our diets for literally thousands of years, our brains would never have been able to reach their present size, intelligence as we know it would be impossible and we'd have never achieved civilisation as we understand it today.
By all means, wail on that 'Meat Is Murder' rhetoric, using your communication skills, intelligence and our collective technological achievements to do so.
We're the top of the food chain for a reason. Morality is a (welcome) indulgence but it has nothing to do with Nature.
I tried a vegetarian diet with much the same motivation and found I was able to keep it up for only a year. I'm just far too skinny and disinterested in food in general to go to the (admittedly little) extra effort required to stay healthy on a vege diet. Nothing else - for me - has the sheer grunt of a piece of meat for powering my daily activities.
Of all food classes, meat seems to hold a special attraction.
As an engineer I find the flora -> fauna -> human consumption system cringefully wasteful. That said I feel no guilt purchasing good cuts of meat which I proceed to burn and enjoy, which makes me a big fat hypocrite.
Lab meat, if it can approach naturally-grown muscle tissue? Bring it on! I can't help being an omnivore with carnivorous tendencies, but that doesn't necessarily mean I'm comfortable playing my indirect part in another being's suffering.
THANK YOU, I was beginning to worry I was the only one who noticed (and was pissed off by) this particularly annoying trait. For all the reasons you enumerate.
I wonder how much work can be off-loaded into 'sleeper tasks' that load stuff only during the user's off-beats; the time between keypresses, any moment that the mouse is moving, etc. Maybe nothing much. Then again, could an intelligent scheduling layer above (below?) the kernel scheduler do a better job of multiplexing requests together cohesively? Something that works to soak up wasted cycles whenever the CPU finds itself waiting on disc, or RAM, network, etc.
I doubt it; as a layman I figure the Linux kernel scheduler is a pretty finely-tuned machine and already doing a pretty good job.. but then I'm constantly surprised by how we innovate atop innovation in ways I would have sworn impossible.
I'm speculating wildly here but is there any way one can trade off disc access for CPU power? At the most basic level I guess I'm talking about pre-calculating something whilst we're waiting on data from the hard disc, but I'm sure there's more to this subject that that. Are there any other things that could be (effectively) reduced to pre-calc'd lookup tables?
I highly doubt NZ acted with 0 evidence
You're obviously not familiar with the NZ Police.
God I wish you were joking. The truth is our police force may very well be the most corrupt in the world.. then again they might be perfect saints.
We'll never know because to the best of my knowledge we don't report corruption like other countries do. Sickening, really.
Your post is woefully underrated and a good example of the civilisation we all buy when we pay our taxes (to paraphrase another user's sig).

Don't be ridiculous.
I'm not nearly lucky enough for such a thing to happen!

different, or maybe if i would of been interested in the whole thing, i was over a friends house and barley paying attention, so watch
Ah, there's your problem. Try hops.
Well, I bet Medical Science is grateful for YOUR input.
Glib fuckwad.

Dexter? Posting on Slashdot!?
Have you noticed that you never get above 0 with your posts?
Most people posting stuff online would fairly promptly realise nobody gives a fuck about their opinion - but not you. Any idea why that might be?

gawker media seems devoted to the concept of celebrity... implicitly devaluing their readership as non-celebrity miscreants.
nick denton is an ignorant hypocrite.
gawker media is garbage.
