    I don't think that's a better answer, since your example is highly unlikely to occur in practice, whereas mine is much more likely.

    Ok, I'll bite:
    • They don't. Endianness applies only to multi-byte integers. If a structure member is a multi-byte integer, then the layout of its bytes is endian-dependent, but that has nothing to do with the fact that it's part of a structure.
    • Yes, if the destination (quotient) register is smaller than the dividend register. For example, if the divisor is 1, then the quotient is the same as the dividend, so it needs a register at least as large.
    • Assume the instruction ANDs with register A and XORs with register B, and assume A and B are 8-bit registers (to keep it simple). To set bit 0, A=0xFE and B=1. To clear, A=0xFE and B=0.
    • Questions that ask you to remember some obscure incident a long time ago are unfair. I've been programming for 25 years, and I guess that I've come across a compiler bug or two, but I can't remember that any more. If I thought that I really needed to give an answer, I'd lie to you. Do you really want to ask questions like that?

    This would be good advice if it were easy to find a good DM and a good adventure that brings out these skills. I've been playing RPGs for 20 years, and I've only met a handful of good DMs, but never an adventure that meets your criteria.

    Frankly, I think the submitter's problem is that his development team is just not as smart as he thinks they are, and his only solution is to higher better people.

    They may be overpriced, but that doesn't mean they're not cheaper than getting a new machine. What if you have 1GB of RAM? You can't move the memory to the new machine, so you'd have to buy it all over again.

    Okay, maybe all the technicalities are a bit confusing to the non-geeks, but if you cook, you know 3tsp in 1T, etc...If you use a computer, you should know the basics.

    Bad analogy. You're assuming that using a computer is like cooking food. I think that using a computer is like eating food. A person who only eats food, but doesn't cook it, does not need to know that three teaspoons is one tablespoon.

    Odd, I have a 400MHz G4, and it doesn't play. Video stutters and I think the audio is running at half-speed or something. What video card do you have? Mine's a Rage 128 Pro.

    It wasn't cheap ($1,500), but it's an excellent piece of workmanship. I haven't figured out how to do it myself, but Daniel (or any of his staff members) can shave (that's right, shave) a 3x5 index card with my sword.

    Daniel is a cool guy, and as far as I'm concerned, anyone who would say bad things about his work is just a complete asshole. If you want to meet Daniel, just go to any major Texas renaissance festival.

    Why does the developer have to know biological anthropology? Can't the developer just work with the scientists to understand the data formats, and create the database for them, and then teach them how to use it?

    I vouch for #3 also. If it weren't for my TiVo, we probably would never be able to watch anything. Generally, you won't be able to watch TV while the baby is awake, because it will demand too much attention. Our daughter likes to shriek while the TV. Press pause, she stops shrieking. Press play, she starts again.

    Also, make sure your wife breast feeds for a year.

    Anyway, being a sysadmin lets you play with hardware, whereas programmers don't get to do this a lot on the whole.

    Unless you're a system software programmer (device driver, BIOS, embedded, etc), in which case you get to play with much cooler hardware than the admins.

    The GUI was designed to only need one button. Ctrl-click has the same function as the right mouse button. You can always buy a two-button mouse with Mac software that lets you assign all sorts of key/click combinations, but at least the core GUI doesn't require that.

    You should at least give the show Tremors a chance. It could suck, or it could be okay, or you might even think it's great, but you'll never know if you don't watch a few episodes of it.

    Remember, a TV series is not like a movie. A series lives and dies as much with the characters and the writing as it does with the plot and overall concept. You may think the idea is silly, or even stupid, but that doesn't necessarily mean the show as a whole isn't worth watching. Anyone cynical enough can take the plot to any movie or series, twist it around, and make it sound like crap.

    If you are paying for quality, then is it really a shame that the prices are high? Doesn't that also imply that the quality is high?

    I think it's hypocritical to praise Apple for producing high-quality products and then criticize them for charging more.
