  1. I have a real problem with this on Project Copycat Clones A Cat · · Score: 4, Insightful
There are an estimated 6 to 8 million cats and dogs killed every year because they are not adopted. That's right, every year, millions of cats are purposely killed because no one will adopt them. So if your cat dies, the right thing to do would be to adopt another cat. Save the life of another animal, please!

People who would clone their cat rather than adopt another one disgust me. According the article, the new cat probably won't look the same anyway! And whether it will behave the same is also questionable. So in other words, it is both unethical and pointless to clone your cat.

The problem with Soft Money is that it is a diret contributor to corruption. There are plenty of cases of it - the article mentions one in South Carolina.

The money that is contributed doesn't necessarily go to "free speech" activities. In fact, typically it goes to buy legislation. If Microsoft wanted to make a commercial that promoted Bush, they would have to justify that to their shareholders and employees. Soft Money allows companies to pretend to give money to political parties in support of the democractic process, but we all know that isn't why they do it. By banning Soft Money, a company that wants to support a candidate would have to do it more openly, under more scrutiny. Their free speech rights are still protected.

As many of you know, a TiVo is always recording when plugged in. I turned on my TV at one point, and saw that it was playing the Superbowl. Apparently, the last thing it recorded was on Fox, and so it stayed on that channel. After a few seconds, I turned the TV off. As far as the TiVo is concerned, I watched the Superbowl from beginning to end, non-stop. Yeah, right.

I think I'll be opting out.

If the page changes content when you go back, then your bookmark is invalid. Typically, when a webpage is marked as "no-cache", that means that the content changes whenever you load it. Of course, using no-cache just for ad impressions is evil.

Just pipe the text to ispell (or any similar already existing program) in the background and all you have to write is a simple parser to handle the results.

That technique doesn't work on all platforms which run Mozilla. Also, ispell isn't available on all platforms, and it would seriously slow Mozilla down, since spawning a process is usually pretty slow.

The cross-platform nature of Mozilla is very, very important, and very critical to its development. All features must be incorporated into the codebase and written in such a manner that the platform doesn't matter.

Probably cause does not extend to a group of people, all of whom are acting innocently, and one of whom is the criminal. In order to ask a single person to be searched, that person must be showing a specific sign of suspicion. The law is quite clear on this already. Otherwise, the 4th Amendment would be completely useless. Just because you happen to be in the vicinity of a crime doesn't mean that you're a criminal. There has to be something more going on.

Please mod the parent up. I completely agree with nusuth - "software is free, pay for support" means that the developer can only get paid if his product needs support. There will be no incentive for him to make the software easy-to-use, let alone VERY easy-to-use. If a piece of software is so well written and designed that anyone can figure it out, then they won't need support. The irony is that the more money/time the developer spends on ease-of-use, the less money he will make!

I have a TiVo, and watching TV for me is a very lazy act. When I want to watch TV, I turn it on and see what my TiVo has recorded. Then I watch one of those shows, skipping all the commercials (I'm too lazy to get up). Then, when the show is over, I decide whether I want to do something else, or watch another show.

My TiVo makes watching TV easier, since I can always watch something I like whenever I want.

Look, there are some people who are just plain technologically inept. They will never figure out anything as complex as a TiVo. Anyone who is so stupid that he can't remember which way a CD goes is beyond hope. There is absolutely nothing you can do to make him understand anything like a TiVo. No one should even bother trying to market to people like that. Even if they did buy it, the tech support cost would erase any possible profit.

Fortunatley, their numbers are dwindling. In time, only a rare few will not know how to use these devices. In the meantime, I suggest you get caller ID so that you don't have to answer the phone when they call.
