If you're not just making stuff up out of ignorance and actually heard that "troublemakers" are being tortured by having car batteries connected to their genitals, then it's obviously FUD. Human skin resistance is around 20KOhms. Car batteries are 12V. I=V/R. 12V/20000Ohms=0.0006A. Guess how much that hurts. Hell, given my choice of torture methods I'd gladly endure this one. Makes me wonder how much Chinese government horror stories is just propaganda.

"Forget about Asia"? You must realize that some Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, and Singapore have much better lines than commonly available in North America - 20-40mbps download is the norm, and some companies are even offering 100mbps lines to homes. On the other hand, North America consumers are getting 3mbps to 5mbps at basically the same value.

Media prices drop fast. When DVD was first introduced it was about the same price; look how much a blank DVDR costs now. And besides, media takes up less space. If I have 2.5 terabytes of data I can store it in a spindle of 50GB BD. On the other hand you'll have five 500GB harddrives sitting around. Lastly, media is more convenient; if you have five IDE drives, you have to shutdown the computer, replace the drive, and boot back up to get at content on a different disk; if you have five SATA drives, you still have to open up the case, unplug, and plug the new drive in; if you have a RAID array it's going to be on all the time and using electricity, as well as degrading. With media, you can just pop the old one out and the new one in. And besides, harddrives won't work nicely with your TV.

So, what exactly is the reason for customer to upgrade to either HD-DVD or BluRay?
Advancement of technology. If everyone thought "What's the point of moving to X technology?" every time a new one is developed, no technology could ever get started in the market and we'd still be stuck on 5.25" floppies.

Yeah, http://www.theweathernetwork.com/weather/cities/ca n/pages/CAON0383.htm I had to walk to the bus station this morning for work :(. Snowing like crazy too, couldn't see three feet in front of me and the sidewalk was wiped from existance. Came home to shovel snow up to my knees off the driveway. I miss Vancouver.
