  2. Re:Just curious... on 2-Year OpenOffice High School Case Study · · Score: 1
I can certainly appreciate your point but I don't think this is a case of OSS FUD. This article doesn't have that "astroturf" ring to it that comes from all the MS propaganda.

TFA mentions that some employees still needed to use MS Office and that a lot of PowerPoint files could not be converted. These are genuine issues, not just thrown in to appear like a balanced article.

I also didn't see any MS slamming going on. They mentioned that the software would be cheaper (self evident) and that they needed to upgrade from Office 97 (I'm sure even MS reps would tell them that). These are fair points, not attacks.

Contrast that with the MS-funded (FUDded?) articles where Windows, Office, IIS, etc. are everything to everyone. So much cheaper, easier to use, more secure, no reason to buy any non-MS branded product (HORAY!).

Again, I hate to see the blind OSS fervor that gets published sometimes, too, but I don't see this as being an example of that.

I agree. I understand the need for security, but privacy about what you do in a library seems sacred to me. We keep shutting down liberties there.

Freedom to read what you want without scrutiny seems like something Americans should hold dear. Using the public computers there seems like a natural extension.

I would love to dismiss this story as alarmist, but I fear the threat is real. These liberties we keep surrendering are starting to stack up. It's time to start using your votes on these issues while we still can.

  13. Please... on Could Microsoft Buy Red Hat? · · Score: 1
As has already been pointed out, MS is not going to acquire another competitor this big with all the heat they are getting for their near-monopoly status.

Also, no self-respecting Linux user would continue to use Red Hat if it were owned by MS; they know this, they would just run it into the ground. This is not all bad for MS except that they'll solidify SUSE's place at the table. With Mandriva/Mandrake trying to redefine itself and RH part of the evil empire, there would be one distro to rule them all. Suddenly all the support/money being spread among the major commercial distros is focused into SUSE. That's traction MS won't want to give anyone.

I'm not taking anything away from the other Linux distros, just being realistic about how much weight SUSE currently has among the commercial Linux world.
