  1. $225 Million on The 3 Billion Dollar Typo · · Score: 1

The mistake was not $3 billion dollars, it was closer to $225 million, as the article fully explains. Sensationalism at its best.

  2. Re:Specialized distributions are actually the key. on Edubuntu - Linux For Young Human Beings! · · Score: 1

Umm...this is just a package. The reason they bundle it as Edubuntu is to make it easier on teachers when installing. There is absolutely nothing specialized about this "distribution." Besides, are you telling me that *anyone* who can read can't type "apt-get install edubuntu-desktop" to generate the same effect? Hell, I've seen more confusing extraneous documentation with regards to coffee machines.

Mod parent up. These random statements based on absolutely no factual data at all do nothing to help anyone at all. Making up facts based purely on your own preferences does not prove one thing or another. And yes, GNOME has far better internationalization support. We also need to give a nod to the Ubuntu team, who's goal from day one has been support for a vast mulitude of languages, and integrating all these seamlessly.

It's my understanding that not every decision is reminiscent of a cloak and dagger-esque thriller between the good people of the City Council and the "evil" oil companies. And actually if you RTFA you'd note that it was just far too expensive to continue with the project. I would venture a guess that they learned this from a cost-benefit analysis rather than pressures and death threats from oil barons with large hats and shiny monocles.

    WhiteDust...what a joke.

  8. Great but... on NASA Plan to Return to the Moon · · Score: 1

While this is great and all, I fully expect private industry to accomplish this goal far quicker and for much less money than NASA. The number of advancements in space technology that are featured on slashdot alone, coupled with the growth in space technology/exploration/commerce in the private sector really makes you wonder how a bloated government agency can compete with agile businesses.

  9. Certs? on What's the Point of IT Certifications? · · Score: 1

Well for me, the certifications I earned helped me get my foot in the door into the IT world. While I have on the job experience that is worth much more than those shiny pieces of paper, it was near impossible to convince HR managers that my lack of certifications did not represent my actual skillset. Earning those certifications got me past the gatekeepers, and I suspect the same is true for many slashdotters.

Of course if you do upgrade, you'll lose all the capabilities to utilize the neat homebrew applications that are out there; though this only applies to firmware 1.50. The browser looks really cool though, so it might be worth it.

I could have sworn I had seen this before on slashdot, yet not on such a commercial level. He hadn't managed to perfect two streaming television channels, if I recall correctly. Hmm...can anyone find/remember this?

Umm no? Did you read the article? The backpack is solar powered which is readily available (and granted a bit shady on a backpack imo). Furthermore, this is readily available internet via EVDO. Sure it is expensive, but it is legal. And while I may agree with you about bridging wireless networks, it is highly illegal as recent news pieces have stated. At least with EVDO (and with you sharing it) you are crossing no legal boundaries...

  18. Re:Green Gang on Should Nanotech Be Regulated? · · Score: 1

The Green Gang were more an autonomous subsidiarity under the KMT than their puppets, partly due to their opposite stance with the Communists. They operated mostly out of Shanghai and provided protection and labor for all facets of the opium trade, which was more or less sponsored by Chiang Kai-shek. They basically established a subgovernment to run Shanghai which Kai-shek allowed and infiltrated all government positions including the police. They even helped the KMT purge the Communists in 192-1927.
