These men are probably "being mad examples of" scapegoats if you will. Yes, they're probably guilty, but it's just a drop in the bucket from what I've read. The Chinese government just wants to look like it's doing something about piracy.
Why would you buy a computer to do backup. You already have the computer, and I doubt you're using so many cycles it can't do a backup at some point. Buy 2 desktop 4 bay enclosures, slap in 4 1 TB drives, swap 'em around every week or month, when you run out of space slap in some more drives. I know it will run you a bit more than $550, but not much; and it's (semi)-portable! It will also be a hell of a lot faster than burning disks or writing tapes for Ch%^*@'s sake!
Or he could have saved $3000.00, and bought 2 2.66GHz Octocore MacPro's and been able to run them as a cluster running XGrid...And still be able to run any OS he chose.
Nooooo!
We deployed wireless as a solution w/laptops...worst decision ever made. Wireless is fine for the home with 1-5 clients, but with a classroom full, speed is pitiful. Unless you plan for 5-6 access points per room, don't do it. Also battery life is fine when the units are new, and there are also issues with users remembering to recharge them when done, theft, damage, etc. Desktops are much better. On that note, the iMacs are great. All in one unit, and you can 'secure' everything with one cable-tie
IMHO
I think what megane was trying to point out was that this was being touted as "new and revolutionary" while Apple has been doing it for years. As for why we do it, it's great for data recovery if the OS goes bye-bye or a laptop screen gets smashed, we can copy the drive over to another laptop and contiue working. Because Apple builds the OS and hardware, it all plays nice together, and you can boot a desktop with a laptop in target disk mode. (Provided you have your architectures in sync - or have built a "universal" system. It's great for diagnosing hardware vs software problems.
Agreed.
I almost got sideswiped yesterday by some fucknut dialing his phone while driving- because he was holding his phone in one hand and dialing with the other- look ma no hands. Not to mention he was looking at his phone rather than the road in front of him; oh, and did I mention we were doing 100Km/h? (60MPH).
(Sorry for the rant.)

But what does the launch actually cost? I mean, vs a shuttle or soyz launch?
Seriously Funny!
THAT'S UNBELIEVEABLE!

Once we stop watching 'reality' shows...f'ing sheep...

Why not just pressurize the shuttle; it is air tight...
"i" agree.

Good idea. However, a serious discussion on /. is unlikely.
Blame.

No, under the Vista EULA only the ultimate edition is allowed to be run in VM.
