  1. Re:The Beeb on BBC Opens TV Archive to Remixers · · Score: 1

Sure I'm listening to their radio station, and watching their website - but so are thousands of other people in foreign countries (with things like the BBC World Service) who don't have to pay this tax.

The World Service is actually paid for by a grant from the UK Foreign & Commomwealth Office, and is therefore not paid for by licence-fee payers. There are lots of people in continental Europe who are able to enjoy MW & LW broadcasts eminating from the UK, but there is little that can be done about this broadcast overspill. I'd certainly agree that these people should pay something towards the fee. If the BBC have any sense, they will be trying to set up an international payment system now. A fee to allow people use of the TV Player, for example. I wonder if international access is something being discussed during the current charter review?

Rather than addressing the real problem of why nontechnical users had trouble finding where their files were, the idiot UI designer for WinFS decided to take idiocy to its most proper level: at no time should a user ever be able to find a file.

As an aside, the Windows Search function has to be the worst thing ever written - even after you remove the mutt. Many times I've used it to search for filenames (not even text within files), only to be told that there are no results. Yet I know the file is there. Sure enough, after painful manual searching that the Search function is supposed to do for me, I find the file, and every time the filename matched the spec I chose. Let's hope WinFS actually allows people to find their files - at the moment, this doesn't happen 100% of the time.

In fact it was only the furore over it in the US that brought it to our attention. The notion that there is a huge moral and sexual difference between 17- and 18-year-olds which needs to be protected was placed into sharp relief. We really can't see the problem. Sex or violence, 18 is the arbitrary limit. As it is, we already have a more dangerous problem, in that parents take no notice of the ratings anyway. What has happened to parental responsibility today? Does our media offer too much unsuitable content to control?
