There is seemingly still this assumption that where there is water, there is life. Earth was one giant incubator, perfect conditions for the evolution of organisms into life as we know it. I'm more interested in drinking a glass of pure Mars water than finding life. Wouldn't the money spent to send explorers to Mars be better spent on making some more weapons?

  2. Re:Yahoo vs Google? on Yahoo Ups Mail to Match Google's Gig · · Score: 1

HAHAHAHAHA. Yep, you can't compare them at all. Oh wait... they're both webmail, free, available, both are driven by ads. But there are too many differences to compare... one has subtle ads, the other has huge distracting ads and fills the screen with junk. One offered an unthinkable amount of webmail storage when the other had just reduced the size of it's free webmail accounts in an attempt to get people to pay for more storage space. Oh wait... THAT IS comparisson!

  3. Re:Ah Slashdot.... on Microsoft Search Advertisers Get Personal · · Score: 1

    You dont see the difference?

The Google appraoch: Scans an email for keywords so they can give you a relevant, discreet ad. This is advertising, make no bones about it, but it can also be quite useful.

The Microsoft approach: Scans your personal details for information to give to 3rd parties for market research and so they can spam you with BS.

Google has ads quite pleasent to the eye, Microsoft (directly and indirectly) has attention demanding flashing Flash and spam emails.

Not surprising Slashdotters prefer Google to Microsoft. It's all in the approach. Google has some respect for privacy at this time. Microsoft has never shown their users any respect. You don't have to agree, but it's not hard to understand.

  9. IE will always be targetted ahead of Firefox on Spyware for Firefox Coming This Year? · · Score: 1

IE users are susceptible to spyware. Generally speaking, only experienced computer users and friends of experienced computer users use Firefox. The general public doesn't know what Firefox is and will keep using Internet Explorer. Most users who have converted to Firefox are the same users who will have SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware and/or SpyBot S&D. What's the point of making spyware for someone who will just remove it over making spyware for the masses? -Viv-

  12. Self Destruction on McAfee Granted Firewall Patent · · Score: 1

This patenting rubbish is going to aid the self-destruction of the USA. Banning US companies from using basic patented technology without paying for the right is just going to destroy any semblence of competition. The only way for competing companies to get back is to acquire an equally stupid patent for something critical to McAfee's software. The patenting system can work. Intellectual property should be protected, but please, some common sense. No life, no software, no general patents. A little brain power goes a long way.
