Ever since airbags came out I'd always wondered what a deployment felt like to the driver in a frontal crash.. I'd been in a frontal crash back in the 70s in a VW Rabbit. A truck ran out in front of me from a cross road with no time to avoid a crash. I managed to turn the car so I hit him at about a 45 degree angle while dynomiting the brakes. With the seatbelt, all I came out with was a left hand (holding the steering wheel that displaced about 6 inches on impact) with broken metacarpal bones. Without the seatbelt, I'd have had the steering column coming out of my chest. Fast forward to July 22 of last year. Wife and I were on vacation in Salt Lake City. I took a drive out in the morning by myself near the airport. I'd just merged onto I80 at about 40 mph and all the sudden the traffic came to a sudden/complete STOP.. I managed to dynomite the brakes, but it was too late. I got a first hand demonstration of airbag deployment. I came out of that with "airbag rash" on my arms that faded after about a week, a sore shoulder from the shoulder belt that ached for about a week, and a ticket by the UHP for following too close, plus a totalled 2008 Hyundai Accent. This was a multicar pileup, where the original driver who apparently stopped on the transition road to I80 (according to the other victims in the pileup) and left the scene of the pileup and left the 3 others behind him (me and 2 others) to fend for themselves. My curiousity has been satisfied about airbags...
Newsright Salesdroid: Hello Google? I'm from Newsright, and I'm calling to set up your payment plan for aggregation of AP/Gannett news on your website.. Google: Say WHAT?? You've GOT to be kidding... Why don't we just NOT aggregate your content, that way we're happy/you're happy... Newsright Salesdroid: Ummm... I guess that would be ok... FAST FORWARD A MONTH.. Newsright CEO at management meeting to salesdroid on Google account: WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO??? Traffic to our clients is down 85%, and they are PISSED... You're FIRED!!!!
Simple: Each one of the major players, put up a black splash page with info about SOPA and WHAT to do about it... That's all, No Google searches, no Facebook statuses, No buying on Amazon/eBay. If you go to one of these sites ALL you get is the black splash page... EasyPeasy...
The REAL enemy is NOT the banks/Wall Street/Big Corps...Its FUCKING BIG GOVERNMENT!! The government that practically FORCED banks to make loans to people who had ZERO capability of repaying the loans. The government that falls all over itself to pass laws that are written by 4-letter groups who are part/parcel of the mass media, with said laws being totally against the Constitution. The government that not only ignores the Constitution, but actively works around it. As far as I'm concerned ANY elected official who violates his oath of office by sponsoring/voting for ANY of these UN-Constitutional laws that are being debated currently is guilty of treason. Yes, I know they will NEVER be tried for that crime, and yes, I know that except for a tiny handful of members of congress, ALL the rest of them are guilty of treason. Having been a Republican nearly all my life, I finally woke up halfway thru BushJr's second term that anybody with an R after their name is just the other side of the coin from someone with a D there.. Considering that the NDAA passed with nearly unanimous support by BOTH parties, and only a few rational, Constitution-loving R's (AND D's) voted against it, tells me that the Constitution, and by defintion, the country, is all but done for... Stick a fork in America, we are DONE... Everyone keeps talking about the 2012 election and how important it is.. I'm to the point where I doubt there will BE a 2012 election.. With the shellacking that the "New American Communist Party" got in 2008, I strongly doubt Dear Leader is going to risk allowing another debacle like that.. Knowing how corrupt this regime is, I'd not put it past him to stage a false-flag "incident" that inflames the country, giving him the ammo he needs to declare martial law, shut down ANY sources of info besides his pet media, better known now as Pravda or the Ministry of Propaganda.. If this occurs, we are well and truly done as the America *I* knew and loved...'
I know this is just one person's opinion, but I've been using 1&1 for years and I've been very happy with them. I have about 20 domains there and never had a single problem.
I *had* a couple domains with 1and1 since 2001, plus their basic hosting, for my personal domain/email I got tired of them continually increasing the cost of their basic hosting package, so I cancelled the hosting, and moved one of the domains over to DNSExit and cancelled the other which had been unused for nearly a year.. EasyPeasy.. I got no static from 1and1, they just asked why I was leaving, I told them their prices were too high. I signed up for hosted email for my personal domain on DNSExit for a whole $20/yr. I now just point DNSExits dns to one of my vps's to run my personal website and I just forward my personal email address to my gmail account, where google chews up the spam and leaves just the good stuff behind. I swear I was getting overwhelmed by spam when my email was hosted by 1and1. They claimed to have a spam filter but it was piss-poor compared to googles... Bottom line: don't know where all the venom for 1and1 is coming from.. I used em for 10 years with no complaints.. My personal domain transferred with no problems...
I'll second this!! I have 3 of the 512MB "Aquatic" vps in their Dallas DC, used for several wordpress/joomla websites, a shoutcast server, and an OpenSim region on OSGrid. Never had any trouble with them, the few times i've had to contact their support (once for getting the tun0 interface enabled for OpenVPN) they were right on the ball. And you cannot BEAT the $6/mo cost either...
I run several wordpress/joomla websites, a shoutcast station, and an OpenSim simulator on three OpenVZ/Ubuntu 512MB VPS from ThrustVPS. I've been with them nearly two years with zero problems. The "slices" cost me $6/mo each. This vendor is the lowest priced OpenVZ vendor I've found, and since I run these sites non-profit, I need to keep the costs down. I have an OpenVPN tunnel from each of them to my home network where I rsync each of them nightly, as I fully realize that even though I've had no trouble with them, trouble may be right around the corner, and I want to be able to quickly restore everything to a new slice if neccessary. They offer locations in Dallas, LA, New Jersey and Maidenhead UK. I'm considering getting another one in the UK to set up a vpn/proxy to allow me to watch UK tv over the Internet. They also offer Xen-based Linux and Windows VPs in all locations. The 512MB OpenVZ slices are 512MB/1024MB burst, 15GB diskspace, 1TB/mo transfer. All in all, for my uses, I'm totally pleased with them. As usual, no financial ties to them, just a satisfied customer..
Oh.. This is just fuckin' peachy.. I have a bunch of users I support on 10.04 who have a Java app that requires Sun/OracleSE RTE 1.6.. We tried to get it to work on OpenJDK, no dice.. Anybody else with apps like this are going to be REALLY pissed if they have "install security w/o confirmation". Anybody know if you have it set to download only, if this will remove sun-jre? Fuckin' Canonical....
But that is problematic because you run into the problem of the judge who throws the jury in jail because they make the "wrong" decision. (Actually happened a few centuries ago.)
Actually it happened right here in the good ole' USA about 6 years ago. Federal Judge Kent Dawson, who presided over the trial of Irwin Schiff, a well-known "income tax" protester, instructed the jury that they MUST find Mr Schiff guilty on all counts or THEY would would be personally guilty of a federal crime. NONE of the prosecutions allegations were proven, and all defenses Mr Schiff's attorney provided were disallowed by this judge. Since I live in Las Vegas, which is where the trial was held, I attended as much of the trial as I could. I nearly became violently ill when I heard this black-robed monster give these jury instructions. Several months after the trial, it came out that several jurors on the trial who were aware of jury nulliication stated they would have voted to acquit, but for the chilling effect of that jury instruction. Apparently none of these jurors had the cojones to ask the judge to please quote the law that he would charge them with should they vote to acquit. I guess I really don't blame them since these black-robed terrorists have all the power (in their mind). Several other high-profile tax protestor cases were found not-guilty despite the same "kangaroo-court" atmosphere during their trials. Trials like Mr Schiffs I would have expected to see back in the old soviet union days in Russia, NOT the USA...
THIS! I'm the defacto tech support for my neighborhood and church. In the last several months, I've weaned 4 peoples computers off of Windows and onto Ubuntu. These migrations happened because the Windows install was so encrusted with virii/trojans that the only thing to do was a clean reinstall. The first person had an HP laptop and could not find the XP recovery disks that she remembered making (and HP only lets you make ONE copy...). The laptop also only supported a max of 2GB of ram, so Windows7 was not a good fit, plus she was not particularly happy about the cost to buy it. I suggested Ubuntu, and showed her my laptop running 10.04. Since she was between a rock and a hard place, she opted for Ubuntu. I backed up her docs and installed 10.04. Since then she's commented that she loves how much faster her 5-year old laptop is, and has shown it to some other friends. Several of these friends also had severely encrusted XP installs and asked if I could schedule them for a replacement of this "cool Oooh-boon-two".. Several of these users had Windows programs that they needed to continue to run and Wine covered these apps nicely. We're now up to 4 happy campers in my little circle who have given Bill Gates the middle finger. I expect this number to grow, as these people realize their computer doesn't bog down over time from all the malware that Windows attracted, AND they show/tell *their* friends...
dont you find it weird that governments are spying on their own citizens MORE than they spy on the enemy ? and even do it more effectively ?
Don't you realize WE are now enemies of the government? When DOJ/FBI puts out pamphlets saying that loners/Constitutionalists/Teapartiers are terrorists, you KNOW we are now considered the enemy of this current regime...
Easy way to fix: 1. Buy a VirginMobile Smartphone (new: under $200, used: $60-$70) 2. Sign up for VirginMobile's $35/mo 300min/mo, "unlimited" text/data plan (used to be $25/mo until about 3 months ago) 3. Save at least half of what you WERE paying...
I've had a VM dumbphone since 2003, on the PAYG plan. I decided I needed to be able to do admin tasks for several servers I run without needing to dig out the laptop and find a Starbucks/McDonalds wifi. I bought a VM Samsung phone for under $100 off eBay, and have been a happy camper for about 4 months. I got in about a month before VM raised the $25/mo plan to $35/mo. No contracts, just $25/mo until I quit paying...
With this, its just a matter of time before these "predicted" red light runners are ticketed for their "pre-crime".... We slide further down the slope that Huxley warned us about....
Seconded. My desktop is now frozen at Ubuntu 11.04, and i am looking for some other distro. Fedora, old love, maybe i will return to you...
Thirded. My desktops and laptops are now frozen at Ubuntu 10.04LTS.. There is FAR too much drama going on with Ubuntu since 10.04.. All the changes to new and crappy stuff. I like the new Mint/Debian, but it has one glaring issue..I use the OpenShot video editor on a daily basis, and getting it from a repo into Mint/Debian was not happening, so I'm sticking with U10.04 for now...
I'm a BIG fan of Anne's books, and have read/reread most of them since my younger days (I'm 61 now). I've yet to read any of the co-written books with Anne and Todd, but I just found out the last book cowritten by both was released just this past June, called "Dragon Time". Apparently it was mostly written by Todd, since Anne was getting sick towards the end. Expecting to buy the book from Amazon, I read the reviews there, and was shocked that all the reviews panned the book severely (one star). Apparently Todd has pretty much ignored Pern story canon, specifically things like: Gold dragons cannot digest firestone, nor flame. Watchwhers cannot fly. "Timing" has become something to be done on a whim vs only in the most desperate cases. Most of the reviews say something to the effect of "if you love Pern, skip this book, it will make you ill"... Be that as it may, I'll likely still read the book, in honor of Anne... if it really is that bad, I have a strong stomach...
Can't be ignored? The supercommittee just failed to resolve a major budget dispute because one major political party is completely unwilling to address it.
Your "facts" are incorrect.. The supercommittee failed to resolve the budget dispute because BOTH parties are completely unwilling to compromise.. The Democrats insisted on raising taxes, like they ALWAYS do, and the Republicans insisted on cutting spending.. Even though I am no longer a Republican, I can see their point FAR FAR better than I can see the Democrats seeming compulsion in raising taxes. A little bit of common sense works really well here.. When you are FLAT FUCKING BROKE, you STOP (or at LEAST seriously REDUCE ) spending, and since none of us Joe_Six_Packs have a printing press for more money, thats how we dig ourselves out of a hole, financially speaking.. The Democrat plan would make our current situation worse, and the Republicans on the commitee KNOW that and thats why they refused to cave to the Democrats "plans".. What "Pravda" will never tell you is that the Republicans had several plans on the table which would have taken care of the deficit, but did not include the tax increases the Dems wanted... Frankly, I would not be surprised if we found that the Dems were told by Obama et al to stall, and when the clock ran out, blame the Reps.... So typical of the left...
Incorrect.. When I got my Tech license in 1976, I had to take a 5wpm code test. Its been at least 20 years since they dropped the code requirement on the Tech license.
Damn.. AC.. I usually don't reply to AC, but in your case, you are SOOOOOOOOOOOOO right on the money, it scares me..Of course you and the rest of us who see history and see it being repeated verbatim right in front of our eyes will NEVER be able to teach most of the useful idiots. Sure, *some* may wake up and see what we've been trying to tell them, but most are going to keep drinking the koolaide.. I echo this AC's "maybe its because I dont want to slide down the hell-hole along with the idiots who invited it AND deserve it".... Again, too bad you posted AC.. you are a man after my own heart...
I'm still on 10.04, and from the sound of the severely degraded stuff coming out of Canonical/Ubuntu since 10.04, I decided to start investigating other distros again.. I tried the new Debian-based Mint, and it looks pretty good, but for one GLARING problem.. I use the OpenShot video editor on a daily basis, and went to install it on Mint-Debian.. Not in the repos, could not get the Ubuntu ppas to work in Mint. Now I'm not a Linux noob, having started my Linux adventure in 1994 with Slackware. I had no more time to waste, so Mint goes on the backburner for me until its tweaked a bit.. Ubuntu 10.04 is good till well into 2012, so if we're still here then, I'll worry about a replacement for Ubuntu then...
When I was a teen in the mid 60s, I lost count of all the times I got the belt by my father. I guarantee you those "belt-of-education" sessions settled me down such that I made it thru US Army boot camp without a Courtmartial and a stay at Leavenworth. Damned kids now think they're entitled to everything and the parents, IF they even care about the kid, they bend over and give the damned kid whatever he wants just to shut him/her up. All the parents are doing is reinforcing the kids entitlement mentality. Of course the kids are smart too.. If the parents DO try to discipline the kid, the kid often threatens to call Child Protective Services, in short, blackmailing the parent. I realize that getting the belt by my father taught me clearly that the world does NOT revolve around me. When I met my wife back in the early 80s, we made a concious decision not to have kids as it was begining to look like the early "nanny state" would prevent me from discipling any kids we might have as my father did. Based on what I just said, I have a funny feeling his daugther needed a good visit with the belt. Looks like a bit of blackmail by the brat of a daughter...
I hope my tinfoil hat is just too tight, but I have a sneaking hunch that the banking industry is gonna put some major pressure on their congresscritters to cobble up some kind of bill to screw up credit unions. I seem to recall there was an attempt back in the 80s to castrate credit unions, but at THAT time there was not enough stark terror in the minds of the banking industry to bribe.. err lobby (yeah thats the word) congress to make it happen. With 650K deserters in ONE flippin' month, the banking bozos ought to be shitting their pants. Remember you heard it here FIRST when CONgress "manages" to get bi-partison bill written up/passed and Comrade Oblowme to sign it in record time... I pray to God I'm wrong, but you know how this game works......

Technician was always (?) code free.
Incorrect.. When I got my Tech license in 1976, I had to take a 5wpm code test. Its been at least 20 years since they dropped the code requirement on the Tech license.
K7DGF
or their software of choice was nothing but a useless piece of shit.
Backup Exec, since Symantec got its claws into it, right??
Damn..
I seem to recall there was an attempt back in the 80s to castrate credit unions, but at THAT time there was not enough .. err lobby (yeah thats the word) congress to make it happen. With 650K deserters in ONE flippin' month, the banking bozos ought to be shitting their pants. Remember you heard it here FIRST when CONgress "manages" to get bi-partison bill written up/passed and Comrade Oblowme to sign it in record time... I pray to God I'm wrong, but you know how this game works......
stark terror in the minds of the banking industry to bribe
