Indeed, and the question is why it is that they're allowed to charge customers more depending upon what it is that they choose to do with the bandwidth. It's one thing to charge more for business accounts that need to be up constantly, but to charge more for the same service is just plain wrong.
Silly you.... Don't you know that Verizon/AT&T and their ilk OWN the Congress/WH/SCOTUS ie: The WHOLE US Government... I can't imagine how you could think otherwise...
VirginMobile's $25/mo plan is great!! best I've seen.. It's going up next month to $35/mo for new signups, but I understand that if you are on the plan now, you will continue with $25/mo. It's 300 "anytime" minutes. amd "unlimited" data/text. I make very few voice calls, so the 300 minutes is just fine, but since I do website design/support, I'd gotten VERY tired of having a customer call wanting me to do *something* on their website, and then needing to find a McDonalds or Starbucks to get on via wifi on the laptop. My only nit is the phone I'm using.. a Samsung Intercept.. slower than molasses in February.. I WANT one of those Google Nexus S.. They have a Sprint model, I wonder if it can work on VM.. Anybody know?? I absolutely positively WILL NOT do cellphone contracts. They are the spawn of satan...
I have a Samsung phone on VirginMobile on their $25/mo 300 anytime minutes and "unlimited" data/text plan, and tether it often via pdanet. Works like a champ when I need acesss and and there is either no wifi or VERY crappy wifi (like McDonalds or to a lesser extent Starbucks)...
If WiFi were REALLY all over the place, I wouldn't need to tether. But it's not.
Or rather, lots of times it is but it sucks. I'd say about half the airports I've been in I can do a lot better with the network connection from my phone than the airport WiFi. Hotel WiFi can be equally terrible, though generally that is faster - but if you were silly enough to go to a more expensive hotel you'll also pay through the nose for an internet plan (that may still suck!!!) so lots of times it's simply more prudent to tether.
Honestly, for what you get tethering plans are not THAT expensive. And at least with AT&T, you can turn it on and off easily and pay a pro-rated amount for the days you had it enabled - just make sure not to crest the data cap if you disable the tethering plan early...
Like McDonalds? I often hit up MCD's for lunch, and I can't say if its every MCD, but the only I frequent has broken-dialup grade wifi.. To start with, don't EVEN bother to try to stream ANYTHING.. OR vpn/ssh... I recall hitting this same MCD before the wifi become free, back when you paid $2.95 for two hours. The connection was rock-sold, and I recall watching a youtube video on my personal laptop that I could not watch on my work network. No rebuffers, just like my home cable connection.. Now that its free, rebuffers every 2 seconds, complete dropouts where the attwifi signal just goes away and then comes back a minute or so later.. vpn/ssh is equally a joke. Now I use my Samsung phone tethered via bluetooth when in that blighted eatery...
It's amazing how many problems and complaints would be solved if every ToS, EULA, and online agreement required some kind of electronic signature to be valid. It should be something that would take more than a quick mouse-click to apply. Also if any amendments to existing agreements had to come with a statement to the effect of, "The amended agreement is identical to the previous one in every way, except the following:" which could be covered in a couple of paragraphs, rather than reading tens of pages of legalese to find what has changed.
See, thats the rub.. they DON'T WANT you to understand it.. They KNOW nobody is going to go out and spend $$$ on getting a lawyer to check any ToS/EULA, unless of course, you are a large company and have a flotilla of on-staff lawyers just standing around molting.. In that case, the company in question makes a under-the-table "exception" for $LARGE_COMPANY, and both fleets of lawyers pat each other on the back and go off to cocktail hour together... Meanwhile back with $JOE_DEVELOPER, who doesn't have a lawyer on-staff and doesn't have the $$$ to go rent one, he simply reads it as best as he can, and hopes there are no ticking timebombs in it, and prays.. So I wouldn't hold my breath for the above "streamlining" of ToS/EULA's...
SWOOOOOSH.... Thats the sound of this once-great nation circling the drain... I don't know why Comrade Oblowme doesn't just do like Hitler did, and declare himself dictator-for-life...I'm sure there wouldn't be very many in congress who would complain. YOU KNOW thats his aim, with all of his complete disregard for the Constitution. I'm sure there is many back-room meetings between Oblowme and his puppetmasters on whether to *allow* another election in 2012 after the shellacking the US communist party... err democrat party got last year.. I predicted that there would be an "incident" just before the November election which would "force" CinC to declare martial law and put a stop to that election.. I bet if their tealeaf readers had seen how bad they lost the House, Oblowme would have arranged such an "incident".. I'm thinking I was simply 4 years too early with my prediction... God help this country...
See? If you'd been running Linux and all gpl'ed software, you'd have the absolute JOY of telling BSA to go take a flying leap at a rolling donut.. or other phrases I'm thinking but rather not say on a PG site.. As long as you're sure you have no BSA-repped commercial s/w on any machine, DARE them to come in for an audit.. Then when they find nothing sue them for harrasment. (and let the air out the tires of the audit teams tires)
every fucking time, someone comes along and tries to map the world of billion dollar finance to their fucking credit card. even bohner was talking about "cutting up the governments credit cards". so fucking idiots like you pretend they have a single fucking clue whats going on, vote those tea party mouth breathers in, they act on the will of their base, and we get shit like this.
FUCK YOU Strack! The teaparty is the ONLY thing standing between this country remaining the USA or becoming the USSA.. You FUCKING Liberals think EVERYTHING is the fault of the Conservatives.. Well let me tell you, the last few "conservative" administrations were no more conservative than Josep Stalin was.. BOTH sides of the isle are FUCKING this country into oblivion.. I used to be a Republican and voted for both Bushes each time they ran. This all changed about 1/2 way thru Bush2's second term, when I realized clearly what a neo-con was... The last truly conservative administration we've had was Reagan.. If lib-tards want to put blame where blame belongs, they need to point at both parties.. just two sides of the same greedy, corrupt party.. BTW: We Teapartiers DO breathe thru our mouths at times, as do ALL human-beings.. (yeah I know, you meant it as an insult... Typical Lib-tard)
Geez! Hell *must* have frozen over.. I *never* thought I'd agree with a dumb-o-crat, especially Conyers.. It sounds as its the repubic-crats behind this Orwellian effort.. Glad I dumped that damned party during the middle of Bush2's second term.. Seems I'm now disenfranchised.. As much as I believe in/admire the Teaparty, they haven't a fart in a windstorm's chance in getting anybody significant elected in 2012.. God, I hate to watch this country circling the drain, but *there* it is....
For the purposes of renting it from a rental company it IS your computer AS LONG as you pay the rental fee. You may be a sysadmin and I'd agree with you 100% on work computers being owned by the employer. A rental computer has NOTHING in common with your example of an employers property...
Morons like this show how much the "black robe" should be changed to a straightjacket... I've gone WAY past the point where ANY of this insanity surprises me.. You'll have to put a gun to my head to get me to every say "Your Honor".. Of course, the way this country is swirling down the drain, it may come to that, sooner than later..
I live in Las Vegas, and frequently see large hummer-style black-white SUVs with the the word "Switch" on them on East Sahara, where one of their smaller DC's are located. Occasionally I see some of their security guys with holstered sidearms in military-style fatigues coming into various eateries near the DC.. They definitely have the Marines/SpecialForces/SEAL-look about them...
All this talk about the original ethernet spec.. Who remembers (and worked with) ArcNet? The company I worked for in 1987 did quite a few installs of the then VERY new Novell Netware 2.1. The platforms were Compaq 286 desktops with 2MB of ram, a 300MB ESDI drive, and an ArcNet network interface card, and ran NW in "non-dedicated" mode, meaning someone used the system also as a workstation. The fun part of setting those systems up was running a utility called "Compsurf" on the drive, sort of a disk tester/low level formatter combo. We started compsurf on Fri evening just before going home, and it was just finishing up Mon morning... Also loved (NOT) the address dipswitches on the Arcnet cards that were so easy to get wrong... Ah memories...
I move a lot of Virtualbox VM's around between my server, desktop and laptop. Both my desktop and server (Dell Optiplex desktop and Dell PowerEdge server) have gig connections, but old me stuck with an old 10/100 Linksys switch and groaned everytime I needed to move a 20-30GB VM around. So I bought a 10/100/1000 switch, at which time I belatedly realized my then current laptop (a Dell Vostro) only had 10/100... Yikes! I've since ditched the Vostro and gone with a Latitude business-class laptop with 10/100/1000... Nice to finally be in the 21st century...
Somebody should assemble a committee to figure out why BOTH republicans AND democrats insist on stepping on the country's neck every time they see some personal benefit from it.
My thoughts EXACTLY!! Obama and his ilk need *some* way to stifle/silence the back-channel called the Internet. He needs ALL of the Sheeple to ONLY get their information from Pravda.. err the MSM.. As long as the Internet and Talk Radio is able to bypass "Pravda", his job of fucking this nation up permanently is much more difficult... I hope I'm wrong, but I strongly suspect that there wil be no 2012 elections. Before that time, *something* will have occurred that will allow him to easily declare martial law and thats the end of the USA and Welcome to the new/improved USSA. There was a time when I'd have needed to have a tight tinfoil hat on to even think this, but alas.. no more....
FTFY.. What the heck do you think Obama/Reid/Pelosi and 98% of the "Democrat" party are? We're watching the once honorable Democrat party quickly changing into the the "New Improved American Communist Party". These people would sure have made the Founding Fathers roll over in their graves. Plus I bet the McCarthy types would have spotted them as communists from 50 miles away....
At times like this, I sure wish I had mod points for this comment..dgatwood's take on what's happening to this country that I love (and its obvious dgatwood loves too) is so completely dead-on, it scares me.. I'm a 61 y/o Army vet, spent a tour in Vietnam 1970-71, and have come to the same conclusions as dgatwood, though I could never express them as eloquently as he/she does in their comment.. God help us all, INDEED...
Yup... Wife and I are planning this years vacation.. We used to fly whereever we went.. not so much any more.. instead this year, we're going to take Amtrak from LA to Chicago, spend a few days there, visit relatives, then take the famous scenic "Empire Builder" train from Chicago to Seattle, spend a few days there, then take the Coast Starlight back to LA, and drive back from LA to Las Vegas... Gonna be REALLY pissed if/when these TSA critters start screwing with the railroads....
As much as I love Ubuntu, I get the feeling that Canonical has "jumped the shark".. First going to Unity, which IMO sucks majorly, and now dropping Synaptic.. Even if its still available, if its not the default package manager, the development of it will *eventually* stop..
Those of us who are lucky enough to live in range of a Frys have it made in the shade.. Wish Frys was everywhere!! I live in Las Vegas now, and originally lived in San Diego, prior to 1996. I was ecstatic when Frys opened a branch there, as I'd previously had to drive to LA for my Frys fix.. After moving to Las Vegas, I was now living in a desert, in more ways than one.. We still had family living near San Diego, so everytime we'd go down there to visit, I'd make a run down to Frys. I was very glad when they opened one up here a few years ago...
Looks like it isnt just the USSA thats becoming a police state, but Canada as well.... With Australia getting the same way, we're gonna run out of places to emigrate to....
...or a old-school 4 port dLink hub (*if* you have one/can find one) between the cable modem and the router... I plug my laptop into one of the other ports on the hub, fire up Wireshark and I'm looking at everything in/out of my network....
I used to use DDWrt on my WRT54GL, but found that Tomato was significantly better IMO. Then when I got tired of running my OpenVPN on another machine on my network, and discovered that Tomato had a fork that included OpenVPN, I switched to that, and never looked back.. While following the wife around thru the Goodwill store the other day, I found a WRT54G v5 that was priced at $5!! Grabbed that sucker, but after getting it home, and checking to see if it was Tomato-able, I was bummed.. it can do DDwrt micro with a bunch of work (it runs VXworks vs Linux) but no Tomato, so I guess it will sit on the shelf as an emergency spare...
