More accurately, all of those companies want to make sure that all the other companies listed can't hijack their efforts. The GPL levels the playing field and makes those behemoths share more than they normally would just because they need it, and know that anything there competitors add must be shared too.
Must have sucked editting video on those floppies gramps... Seriously though, today's multimedia systems provide way more activities to waste storage on compared to your TRS-80. Suppose you want to store home movies, or edit photography, mix your own music, or even study special effects. All that requires space. And those are all activies that traditionally require at least a garage full of equipment, and are not traditionally considered computer nerd fare. But whatever, don't let me take you away from your Ensure...
Doesn't most spam come from the United States? It sounds like this is a British ISP, so I really wouldn't worry about it that much if you truely are concerned.
If it's BSD licensed they don't have to strip out identifiable bits, the most they'd have to do is honor the possibly nonexistant advertising clause. But I suspect there's a large bit of functionality that needs to be "polished."
Congratulations Blogger Dan Z. You've just described a degree from Devry or Intellitech or Technical University. All of which turn out "Computer People" tht are easily replaced by outsourcing. The point of computer Sience is to make you underastand what you're dong when you declare classes or mess with bits. And another thing - XML isn't that hard. You certainly don't need a 16 week course to get the drift. Anyway most College students are expected to lean things on their own time as well. Nothing's stopping you from learning perl or python while you're studying algorithms in scheme or working through matrix maths.
Linux came in too many "mutations" (the basis of evolution BTW)
Didn't you know? Evolution is too controversial, so Windows Vista only supports teaching intelligent design. On the plus side it let them make a sweet deal with the Kansas school board. It especially bad when Clippy talks about how the Earth is 10,000 years old and then deletes Encarta.
There's plenty of Room for Growth in this industry. While I was getting my animation degree, most of animators abhor the flash interface. THey use it because it's the best there is right now that can do vector animations. If someone can extend SVG into a truly flashlike platform and make an interface Artists can use, you'll see quick adoption once the word gets out. Or AdobeMedia will fix the flash interface to work like illustrator and art people will stop complaining.
Actually, it is done in flash, then exported to video. My friend "animates" Harvey Birdman. Flash is the future of low budget 2d animation for sure. A couple o fshows on Nickolodeon are done in flash as well.
I'm sure his superior officers will enjoy hearing that he doesn't want to be in Iraq because the locals don't want him there. And after they finish laughing their asses off, he'll still be in Iraq. Seriously, I doubt this guy has a whole lot of choice where he goes til his service is up. Way to give useful advice.
MAth is one of the subjects where it is most important to examine the process behind a particular answer. Reducing everything to a series of multiple choice questions and scantron bubbles would be disasterous. At that point you may as well quit teaching.
Wow, the world's not ending. THat was a nice well reasoned response. I don't see why all of slashdot goes nuts everytime over such small items. I hope everyone feels silly for freaking out. Oh wait I'll probably just get modded into oblivion. Zaijian karma.
Something awful was hosted by directnic. Directnic's data center has fortified itself - seems the head of IT there's ex-special forces. He's blogging the whole thing here http://mgno.com/ . Something awful's box had to be take down because they're losing their data pipes.
When trying to decide on competing standards, I have a simple rule that almost always works... always choose against Sony.:)
This is true. Sony usually makes it almost impossible for anyone else to license their technology, and then it fails due to market pressures brought on by more reasonably licensed competing technologies. Observe the fate of memorystick, mini-disc, sony's audio file format and portable digital player, even i.link (sony's extension to IEEE1394)
And there it is... I know it was an attempt at sarcasm, but until you can give me BF2, SWG, WoW, and HL2 without sacrificing a crap ton of performance (cedega I'm talking about you), I'll stick with Windows. Linux can power my webserver like no other, but I have no use for a linux desktop.
Any non-gamers have trouble parsing all those acronyms?
Actually, it's not the apperance I miss from photoshop, it's the actions palette. Being able to record and playback simple macros was great. Nowadays I have to whip out scheme. Likewise, the layer styles from photoshop are also very cool. But the UI look itself isn't critical.

"You forgot about Poland!"
Considering Debian isn't actually on board (Doesn't use .rpm format) you're down to 33%. And what's with the Mexican gardener thing in your sig?

Teen Titans is not flah, it is still storyboarded here, then shipped off to pencilled in Korea.

It's not libelous as libel implies ill intent. It's factually incorrect, but it is not under the scope of the law libel. (Yay media ethics class)
Hmm. Well, I don't get the parent either. Must not be my day.
Whats up with Gandhi these days? I thought it was only me doing this shit.
Huh? I don't understand.
I personally would have gone with NotMambo. That way it's clear what they are and what they were.

Saturday School != felony
But Intelligent design did spark a great open letter - check out the dogma of the Flying Spaghetti Monster at www.venganza.org

If things get desperate the applications can always be migrated to a new platform.
I'm only twenty and every gamer I know started off playing their older sibling's NES.
