    well yeah, i know that. i thought that UNIX wasn't really that high on the embedded list of OS's though....not nearly as much as linux. i was going on one of the characteristics that linux _would_ have and _windows_ wouldn't
    hardly what i would call worthless

    just about every dvd player i've seen seems to use the linux type explorer when looking through files on a cd such as mp3/pictures
    the only reason i'm going on this is the use of ".." to go back a directory and the inclusion of "." which has no use - just like the linux explorer :) i know windows _can_ use the same format (ie ".." and "." both work on it) but it's obviously not that due to the inclusion of the superflous "."
    i'm only just starting to see windows run things embedded, such as on phones.
    Anyone got anything to add on the linux/dvd front?

    ok, i did manage to make that command work in cygwin by changing it a little to :
    $ strings /cygdrive/f/windows/system32/ftp.exe
    and see the copyright 1983 cally stuff on it. Did xp ever have this command? maybe bill removed it after hearing about people seeing this stuff (i have heard this statement before but didn't try it out).

    er, i love me unix (got a debian box too) nad would love to actually see this mythical output...what did you mean exactly? maybe i typed it wrong...

    hrm, i wouldn't worry about it too much. mod points are like ops on irc...cool if you get given them but i wouldn't worry too much about it. from the fact that the posts before his claims to fame seem semi serious i think he's just trying to prove a point to a friend.
    anyway, it's only the internet....allthough i of course would be interested in that ask slashdot....which would accomplish nothing i'm sure, but would be entertaining nontheless

    you sure do invent a lot of stuff dude. according to your last few comments recently you invented self parking cars, bluetooth, screenshots, encryption....and was one of the original programmers at microsoft.     well microsoft managed to fuck it up with the 360 and the overheating power supply. sony managed to screw up first gen ps1's - how many ps1's did you use to see back in the day upside down because the cd drive was screwed.
    that said, the point i'm trying to make is i guess anyone can mess up, even a company we actually like such as apple

    heh it isn't the most important server - it's my desktop :)
    just wanted to install it and play with it. i've already been informed that IIS is on the xp pro cd by someone else, but as i said to him, there are a lot of boxs out there that only had the OS installed at the store (allthough that isn't the case with mine).

    give me a break chum, i'm running apache right now. and what if (although this isn't the case) it was a machine that only had the operating system installed at the store? i remember one of my exs emachines box (shudder) was like that.

    it bitched about not having IIS installed. where i come from they call a software package that requires another to installed first an expansion pack. just thought i'd point out it isn'tas free as they say. oh well, guess i'll stick with apache on a non virtual server...
