I think many of us Linux users / admins prefer have multiple ways of doing things. We can each find what feels natural to us, and for our users. I use gentoo, because I love portage, and I use gnome, because it feels intuitive... to me. Why should I have to give up what I like, which is currently available to me, just because someone wants "standards"? Why should Linux Devs give up the right to try a system that they believe will be superior?
I've worked three jobs. Totaled 115 hours a week. I was so tired I couldn't see straight. Would usually go 3 days in a row without sleep, then sleep 2 or 3 hours and go back to work. I spent at least an hour and a half to two hours driving every day. I did this "just to make end's meet". Then I realized what was causing the problems. I was living with my girlfriend (who didn't work) which was a Good Thing (TM). But then her brother, and two friends moved in with the insistance that they were going to "pay rent". They never did. Which is when I moved from one fulltime and one part time at about 60 hrs / wk to three full times. I was having to support them all. After a couple months, my patience ran out. I kicked out all the bums living off of me, and moved into a smaller apartment closer to the best job I had, quit the rest and made it off of one job. I moved close enough I could walk most days, and saved gas. It worked. It was hard, and I lost friends becuase I wasn't willing to support them, but *I couldn't*. I was living beyond my means, not because I was spending too much on furniture or my car, or even gifts for my GF (couldn't even buy a gift on our 1yr anniversary things were so tight), but I was helping too many others. I take that back... I was *supporting* too many others. If they had looked for jobs they could have gotten them. I know they could, I got *3* jobs. They could have found one. But they were lazy. These are the same people who game the system. My GF and I later broke up b/c she thought I wasn't going anywhere in life b/c I was only working 1 job. When in reality I was recovering. I now work as the systems administrator for the local FD and make more than all 3 of my previous jobs combined. But I had to work for it, proving my worth to a small company owner and working my way in. If you are willing to put forth the effort and minimize their lifestyle, you can and will make it. you just have to keep at it. I was working at it for years before I made it. Now I get paid to sit and work on computers. Don't give me crap about how poor people can't make it. My Dad is blind, and my Mom is a custodian. I make as much as both of them, and can now help them, the way that they helped me. Starting poor isn't an excuse for staying poor.
My best friend since grade school works for a company that does *hospital* software, in OO perl. It is very stable, very functional, and very quick to update / patch. That is actually where he learned perl could be programmed in OO fashion. He then taught me, and we are currently working on a modular universal perl back-end for developing custom web-pages and web-based applications. OOPerl is very functional, and very simple. Lots of documentation on it online, too.
Point of this post: perl can cut it, and does so efficiently in an environment where it is literally a life-and-death situation.
then we agree fully. As you see in my above post, I am libertarian. The go't needs to get out of this. And if we used the fair tax ( http://www.fairtax.org/ ) than we wouldn't have to worry about tax breaks at all.
Try writing standards compliant, compiling on linux and windows. Many projects work this way. Many more need only slight modification. Or you could use a web-based application. Or a run-time environment. There are many options, and I'm sure that at least one would fit for most companies without major porting costs.
Thank you, sir, and I am also a libertarian. I think marriage is the responsibility of churches, and civil unions the realm of the gov't for all people. And the only reason for Civil Unions is default denotation of beneficiary in the event of death or extreme disablity.
I actually pulled from his book something very different. I had to read the book a few times, but there are definate undertones where he comes across shadowing the authoritarian Hegemony as a Bad Thing(TM). Such as the rejection of religion, the punishments for more than two children, and espescially the monitoring of all children. More so he shows how such things as these negatively affect those under it's influence, ie the difficulties the parents have with religion (baptism of the children and ensuing arguements), how many children they have (the obvious discomfort of not having more in the face of the financial burdens) the fact that Ender as a "third" could not have gotten an education without support from the government, as though "thirds" are lower life forms than the others, and even the intolerance proliferant through the system against these "thirds" shown even by the children and the system's refusal to put an end to it. I think Ender's Game shows clearly what is wrong with an authoritarian government and is a strong testament of why we need a government that does not squelch us.
So it's okay when heterosexual women flash their breasts (lewd behavior) during Mardi Gras or get felt up by their studmuffin while sitting on the park bench.
The Church is against this too. I am a Mormon, I have *many* homosexual friends, and we agree to disagree about it. They know how I stand, I know how they stand, and we are okay with that. They do their marches, and I send letters. I don't agree with the idea of same sex "marriages", and calling couples "families", but you know something? Neither do most of my homosexual/bisexual friends. They agree that a "family" is a father, mother, and maybe some children. I am a convert, wasn't a member until I was 21, yet I have never been to a "titty bar" because I disagree with the idea. It isn't something I support. But I don't condemn people for going to them. That is not my place. If it is wrong, as I believe, then it will be sorted out when we die. But that doesn't mean that I have to support it. In fact I am quite offended by public nudity, *including* Mardi Gras. There is nothing wrong with the human body, but I think people should have more self-respect.
I do denounce the lifestyle. I disagree with it. But I do not denounce the people. I don't think they should be gathered and shot, nor do I think that they should be unable to find work. I don't even withhold my friendship. But I will not fight on their side when they ask to call a same-sex union a "marriage" and the union that results a "family" because these definitions are contrary to my own. And you know, because I am not harming directly through withholding my support, it is my *right* to do so, just as it is their *right* to be as they are. I will not persecute them. But I disagree with the lifestyle.
Am I a bigot? Will you deny me my right to believe as I choose? Am I less human than they?
Can I get your e-mail address, so I can send you a couple pics of my drive home?
I've had it described to me by a family who used to live in Southern California as "the most beautiful landscape we've ever seen." But if you'll give an e-mail address, I'd be happy to send pics, and let you make up your own mind.
I'm getting more people to use gmail in areas that don't have broadband, specifically because of the lack of images. Works well for them, and they are happy.
take place from the middle of the Pacific
Hawaii???
They do have 3d acceleration. I game on it, and get better framerates than I do in windows on the games I do play. Definate 3d acceleration there.
The newest version of X has ati-drivers built in for the 7500 and up. Very painless install. Thank to the guys at Xorg.
Yes, I'm registered member of the Catholic faith
does this mean you get spam from the catholic church? Or do they have a different registration process?
Do you call your "device" an "intern" too?

Only if he wanted to run gnome...

Just a "desk" as in Ender's Game. Once muni wifi becomes availible, look for the buggers...
Very sound advice, though you could do the same thing with Perl. This is what I recommend, because many of the older languages are a bit archaic.
You have to be the luckiest man on earth... or at least the luckiest slashdotter to have your UID...
Yet many of the people who say they believe as you criticize Microsoft for delaying Vista.
/unzips flame-suit.
This message is brought to you by a user of Gentoo Linux, and I'm not fond of Microsoft, as you can tell by my sig.
... how are you browsing slashdot?
Love the sig, and thought you might appreciate this linked article.
Kid's Violence Levels
what more could I ask for?
Linux support?
My mom knits. I asked her last time we were together, and she said it's relaxing. YMMV.

And people still say there isn't a God...
