Agree 100%. I'm an engineer (electrical) and knowing Matlab is simply a requirement. In fact, a PhD student in Physics (my sister-in-law, actually) asked me for some help with it. It's mandatory.
Agreed. 25 years is no biggie. When I worked for Fitzimmons, we had blue prints for John Deere tractors going back to the 50s. (This was in 2008).
Store *data* in a couple of formats, use high-quality CDs/DVDs, use a good thumb drive, and maybe even an SSD. Store all in a moisture barrier bag (check Uline) with dessicant, and seal. They are also ESD compliant.
You'll be fine. I just had to buy a bunch of ICs* made in 1990 that were stored as such, and they work just fine.

They are a number of electrical component manufacturers (TI, Toshiba, On Semi, Fairchild just to name a few) that have had their plants affected. Besides hard drives and their respective components, there are a ton of other electronics manufacturers that are saying their plants will be shut down until as late as Q2 of 2012.
Expect a lot of consumer electronics to go up in prices, especially as class-3 electronic devices (medical, aerospace) get priority for components.

The US builds more cars, light trucks and SUVs than anyone else in the world, and I am happily employed by that industry. I won't by any means say that they are any better in terms of quality or cost-effectiveness (mostly due to the UAW) but we still build the most.

I can't tell you how many times I've personally gotten stopped by a website that insists on only playing nice with IE, even if I spoof Firefox to act like IE. That includes my own company's IT website (Remedy) and the banking websites of my parents and others. Telling them to switch banks because they don't play nice with Firefox or Mozilla gets me lots of deer in headlights stares.
Until we can REALLY use other (better) browsers for everything, we'll still be heading in the wrong damn direction.
I can tell you exactly what is happening - I had (have) the exact same problem. It is due to the Flash extension (NOT Mozilla's fault - it is buggy garbage from Macromedia). FF would stay open even with all windows/tabs closed and still draw 100+MB and 99% CPU draw.

I work for a very large automotive supplier...at my plant we use a VAX running OpenVMS to process the broadcasts from Chrysler to know what parts to build and ship. Works great, that and 5 DEC servers we have connected to VT120s. Why upgrade/change what works fine?
My suggestion to this has been to allow Microsoft to somehow disable a system that is knowingly pirated (ie, break the TCP/IP stack or something) so they don't loose data/damage hardware but takes them offline so they can't spread bugs. Then, MS forcing you to have a legit copy of Windows doesn't hurt the rest of the 'net because the pirate boxen are offline.
So many people are missing the point. It is *not* cheaper, because Canadians get paid $LESS than Americans do, dollar for dollar. Myself and a coworker at a sister facility in Canada are the same salary grade. He makes $2000 CAN more than I do - I make $52000 USD, he make $54000 CAN but I still make more than him, all things being equal because his costs are higher. No difference.

The nearest Blockbuster to me charges $4.29 for ALL movies--new releases or old ones. They just give you a week rental on the old ones versus 1 day on the new ones. To me, $4.29 is way too much for a rental (let alone paying $7 for a disposable one), and who needs a movie for a whole week??
Agreed... I have had one for a few years, and now it sits in a drawer, barely ever used. I even have a Sony MD deck attached (optically no less) to my home stereo. It too goes unused. I had a Sony MD deck in my car, beleive it or not.
The biggest beef I ever had with my MDs was that there was no high-speed dubbing. When I bought the portable one, I was lead to believe that the USB->MD Interface would somehow let me dub my MP3s to a minidisc faster, but I was wrong.
Now I use my SD-based MP3 player with 512MB of memory in a postage-stamp size that transfers a song in a few seconds, and I can pop between my player, PDA, notebook and desktop.
It sounds like this one may be digital and let me move my data (audio is just PCM data) around quicker--this is the only thing that could possibly keep MD alive.
I got one of these a few weeks ago, and did what they said. I have noticed absolutely NO difference in my aggregate upload/download times or speeds.
I do however host a small website that has some sound clips on it. According to my Webalizer, I had 6,230,098 KB (thats about 6GB!) of upstream data, so I thought at some point that might become odd and bring some attention. (August of 2003 was a whopping 20GB.) I haven't gotten anything (yet), but I was hoping my upstream speed may go up, but it doesn't look like it. I want to throttle my upstream speed on Apache, but I haven't found a mod for Apache 2.0 that works well.
This has probably been said already (maybe not) but isnt suing replaytv for giving consumers the ability to skip commercials like suing mozilla for blocking popups?

This reminds me of a time circa 1995/96 where I was a member of the Flying Circus BBS. (Before the 'net was as it is...) I posted a comment on the board about using PKLite to "shrink" executable files as they ran, because I was filling up my 540mb (read it--megabyte) hard drive. I received so many flame replies about how no one should ever be filling 500MB of disk space, and how I needed to move some data offline, etc.
Offline data--now a term of the past really. Why keep anything offline when you can have it all at once? Not that it mattered that the 540mb hard drive was $500 on my 486 DX/33.

Seriously... I work in the Auto industry, as a Quality Engineer (basically, a customer support bitch who has some specific skills). My customer is General Motors, several plants in the Detroit area. The company I went to told me that they would not be issuing me a cell phone or pager nor reimbursing me for my Nextel because it is not "economically value added." Needless to say, once a week or so, I get a nasty voicemail on my office phone asking why the hell I don't have a cell phone because they have a line stoppage and no one to contact--my boss (management gets the phones) turns his off after work.
Needless to say, I forward those voicemails to him!
