    Placing it side by side with Bitstream Vera Sans Mono, almost all the characters are near-identical (though a bit lighter weight). The only two that differ are the zero (made worse by the ellipse), and the lowercase i, improved by a nice rightwards curl.

    I thought Google were refocusing Glass towards professional markets (it has a foothold in some medical and engineering places, where the price tag and style are less of an issue). So consumer Glass is on hold; pro Glass is moving forward nicely.

    I second the motion for a tech scene in the lake district. It does seem that (the London-based) politicians often forget that there is a whole country there outside of London. Much of the tech industry in the UK is already based in London. If the government wants to support jobs in the sector, then it would do well to look elsewhere. We're nerds, remember. We don't like the hustle and bustle!

    I have found one problem with open source toolchans - producing good quality graphics. At the end of the day you have to present the data, and gnuplot just isn't cutting it anymore.

    Try R instead. It's FOSS and the graphics are fantastic. (I haven't used Mathematica, but the 2D plots are better than Matlab's. You can also easily link it up to ggobi or Mondrian for visualising multidimensional data.)

    BEos and it's original hardware was the last, best hope for a solid, no B.S. modern computer that was re-designed from scratch for maximum performance with pre-emtpive multitasking.

    BeOS isn't quite dead. Or at least, it died but the Haiku Project is an open source reincarnation of it.

    There are thousands and thousands of films from the early to mid twentieth century, not to mention newsreels and other content, just rotting away. There isn't a huge market for any individual work, so publishers won't release them commercially, and no-one else can get at the content because of copyright. A project like this with an aim of getting content to everyone (rather than making profit) is an ideal way round this problem.

    Okay, I've just had another quick play around with the GIMP, and maybe it's not quite as screwy as I'd previously thought. I did genuinely spend a long time fannying about with it last time, but perhaps I was just having a bad day.

    Cheers for the link, I too have tried and failed with the GIMP. After hearing rave reviews about it, I recently downloaded a copy to give it a whirl.

    My first task was to crop a bitmap image, and do some minor touching up. Pretty simple, it would have taken about 1 minute in even Paint, or some other hateful program.

    However, in trying to figure out the GIMP's godawful interface, it took me over half an hour, and then I gave up. It goes well beyond kludgy, it's plain counter-intuitive.

    Instead I downloaded a copy of Paint.NET, which is also free, and a damn sight more straightforward. Problem solved!

    I like the name "wii"

    "Wii" only sounds rubbish if you pronounce it "Wee", like taking a piss. On the other hand, it you pretend it's a shortened version of "wifi", as in "Why Aye", then I think that's a lot cooler. Only trouble is, you're gonna confuse a lot of Geordies, who'll think you're just saying hello.

    I could have easily written down every credit card number that was handed to me....

    A guy I knew in school got a job at Barclaycard, and started doing just that. Whenever a customer phoned up to pay their bill, he'd note down the details and use the card himself. It wasn't very long before he got caught and thrown in jail...

    Look at how often men masturbate when they can't shag, it doesn't serve any purpose except for feeling good.

    Actually masturbating stimulates sperm production, which makes you more fertile for when you do get round to shagging, and consequently gives you an evolutionary advantage. Jerk away!
