  1. Re:Food Inc is crap on Animal Farms Are Pumping Up Superbugs · · Score: 1

It's funny you mention Gore. About halfway through this thing I was reminded of his movie about climate too. I totally agree this is mostly fear mongering (as many have commented), but for someone who didn't know squat and didn't really care about our food system (ie. me), it made me think. The only thing it got resonably correct was the unsustainability of our current farming models and some of the reasons why it's gotten here (corn/farm subsidies). BTW, if you've read any good research papers on the subject, please link some.

  2. Organic food isn't just for hippies anymore... on Animal Farms Are Pumping Up Superbugs · · Score: 2, Informative

Speaking of hippies, I stopped by my token hippy friend's place the other day and they were watching this documentary about food. It was called Food Inc. and after literally the first 5 minutes, I planted myself on the couch and watched it. I always knew our (ie. us Westerners) diet was pretty bad, but I really had no idea HOW bad the food system is. We're basically eating crap 24/7.

Long story short, I've been reading up about this topic lately and can suggest a few easily accessible resources for anyone who wants to learn a bit more:
Food Inc. - A decent documentary to get you started.
The Omnivores Dilemma - An easy read that can point in the right direction for further research.

  8. Re:Uncompressed Codecs on In-Depth Look At Video Codecs · · Score: 1

TDMS is not the same type of "codec" like those described by this article. Technically yes, it is a codec in the broadest sense - it does encode data for transmission and decoded it at the receiving side. However, TDMS is a PHYSICAL layer encoding scheme, and as you mentioned, it's function is to aid in data transmission. Video codecs are generally an APPLICATION layer encoding scheme that may or may not implement some kind of compression. Generally video codecs do use compression because the progression of digital video data is always quality vs. size. Because of this, I think the authors generalization is valid, as one would not group codecs like H264, XVID, MPEG4 in the same category as codecs like 8b/10b, TDMS, Manchester. Cheers

  9. Net Energy Usage? on Mercury Contamination Vs. Energy-Efficient Lightbulbs · · Score: 1

How much more energy does it take to actually manufacture these CFL bulbs? We already know their usage involves the potential problem of mercury contamination down the road, but if it takes 50x the amount of raw energy to manufacture these things, how can we justify the 2-3x increase in efficiency? Has anyone read any articles that shed more light on this? BTW, I've always wondered this about solar cells as well - do they have positive net energy?

It's shame that American forefathers' words have gone completely unheard. One would think that these men had it correct, given America's dominance in the world today. Why then is the government still making descisions based soley on religion and not on scientific advancement. If God did not intend for us to discover the miracle of life (DNA, stem cells, etc) he would not have made our minds capable of understanding them.

Too bad stock prices are only loosly based on company performance i.e. productivity. The forces that sent Google to a ridiculous $400 per share are mainly speculative - and will only hurt the small investors who bought at $300-400 once the buzz subsides. Furthermore, all this will happen while Google continues to be relatively profitable and productive.

As someone mentioned above, ATI's southbridge offerings are, to say the least, lacking. I know on their (ATI's) new crossfire platform, most if not all motherboards use the ULI southbridge. That chip has some great features - SATA300, PCI Express link, and RAID0/1/0+1/5. What will ATI do now? I can't see nVidia making this integration any easier for ATI, so will ATI go looking for its' own chipset company? VIA, SiS, etc. will soon be saying, show me the money!

Evolution, the physics Standard Model, and all other scientific works will continue to advance human society while a blind religeous acceptance of the world will not.

Actually the spoof is not flawed. It is true that the purest form of ID states only that there was a designer, not specifically whom that designer was. However, the way ID is being discussed in the USA, it almost always points to "god/jesus/christian views/etc" as the designer. This is where the spagetti monster spoof comes in. If the proponents of ID want to keep pushing this BU**SH*T "theory" then they have to - by the very nature of their own "theory" - recognize that there is a slim chance that there exists a spagetti monster and that he created us. I think it's fricken hilarious, but to each his own.
