There is a subtle change that modern distros do when they set the Gnome menus that addresses this. Programs are listed as such things like 'GIMP Image Editor', 'Firefox Web Browser', etc. What does 'GIMP Image Editor' do? It edits images and this is even more obvious that using a name like Photoshop.

This wasn't done when I started using GNU/Linux and it's a small but very helpful feature.

No, they don't all still work as they did before. To insert a page break, I used to press ALT-I-ENTER-ENTER. This no longer works. To paste special, I used to press ALT-E-S. This no longer works. To change the page setup, I used to press ALT-F-U. That doesn't work anymore either.

There are probably more lost keyboard shortcuts, but I found Office 2007 way too slow, so I switched back to Office 2003 after a few days.

XP works fine with 128MB of memory for the first few months. Install a few programs over the next few months and XP becomes almost unusable. It's easy to reinstall XP when using VMWare, but it is a pain in the ass if you have to install your OS every few months. 256MB isn't close to "ideal", but it'll do if you aren't doing much.

  25. Re:triple-blind? on On the Future of Science · · Score: 1

Kevin Kelly wrote a very interesting article, but his "triple blind experiments" are not triple-blind experiments, triple-blind, or experiments.

As wikipedia puts it "Triple-blind trials are double-blind trials in which the statistician interpreting the results also does not know which intervention has been given". Three roles (experimenter, subject, and statistician) are blind to the controls. Only two people are blind in his version, but they are blind to the whole thing not just the controls. And as you pointed out, he is talking about analysis not experimentation.
