Obvoiusly this was brought in to the "standards" by the MPAA to prevent hacks like those in this article. The only sane way to place curly braces is like this:
if (true) { do_it(); }
Also, do not use
if (true) do_it;
because sooner than later you will be adding commands into the true-block. You'll need the braces anyways.
Although if a project decided for other styles I follow them, of course. Consistency is more important than personal preference.
Exacly what I wanted to say - People that block Ads are the people who aren't interested in it anyway. Noone looses a click because of it and ads are pay-per-klick nowadays. I don't think branding is strong with a Webad. They are too annonig. Maybe it works for already big brands but it does nothing for the small online bank. At least I think so.
Ads always annoyed me, esp. the argument about free content (TV and Internet). Ads are paid for by makers of products. We as consumers buy the products. Therefore we pay for the ads. Without advertizing, products would be cheaper so we would have plenty of money to pay for TV and Internet. I know this is naive, but not without truth.
In Germany, we pay for Ketchup. Everywhere. At least it used to be, McD and BK started to include one Ketchup with every menu. Every extra is around 15 Eurocent I think.
You could try Mini-DVD-Rs (or +, whatever). They are smaller than floppys and can store 1.4 GB of data. Everyone with a dvd player that is not slot-in can read them. Cons are obvoisly the same as any optical media, the burn process (though it is getting easier to just put some files on them), scratches and they dont have the nice "snap-in" feeling that floppys or minidisc have. And they destroy slot-in-drives if you don't know about it.
Notice that for most people it wasn't the CD-R oder CD-RW that killed the floppy. Even worse were attempts like ZIP disks. Only the cheap USB-Flash-stick came in to fill almost every aspect that floppys were used for.
Why? Simple: every modern computer can use it without a special drive.
Allowing standard user-writable medium in the first place IS pretty piracy friendly. Using only proprietary stuff or at least reasonably protected stuff wouldn't be.
> GCN's cd's spin backwards relative to normal disks, so that's why pirating is hard (I think even nonexistant at this point)
As others told, the discs do not spin backwards. Also, there is a working and publicly available Modchip for GC, but only since a few months. IIRC its called Viper.
Job said Apple will be selling PowerPCs at least until 2007. Hopefully the two years you talk about will be a bit more. Maybe Rosetta will even be able to emulate the other way around. Hopefully. I think if not, noone will be buying those early 2007 PowerPC-Machines.
I remember that disney comic where scientists found a real "nothing" in far outer space. They filled some of it into a container and uncle scrooge stopped to pay any taxes because he owned nothing. He even sold nothing to other people so that they owned nothing, too. That was a quite messed up concept.
I am thinking about what the massive backwards compatabilty means for the controller - It has to be, in some ways, a classic but flexible controller because you have to be able to control SNES, N64 and Gamecube games with it. Remember the N64 had for yellow "directional" buttons that transormed (well, kind of) into an analog yellow stick on the Gamecube controller. But some games on the N64 used those yellow buttons as standard buttons (not for camera movement or whatever) in a way that would be unplayable with those buttons mapped to a stick. Lets see what Nintendo comes up with...
Maybe they will have a good automatic standard mapping for the Rev controller, maybe they will even change some games to be used with less buttons. The N64 had 10 buttons (counting start), 9 of them usable simultanously. Gamecube controller has 5 buttons and 2 shoulder triggers. You see where the trend is. A controller with 10 buttons today would be seen as bulky, i think.
> Of course, that might not be so great for the porn industry. Eew.
Obviously you are not informed about the important role smells have in human sexuality. I mean of course we are strongly visual beings. But there is heavy stuff going on with us and the world of perceivable and unperceivable smells!
> A fork shares a lot of components of a spoon. That doesn't mean we use sporks most of the time.
In fact, if you want to take your fork and spoon with you, e.g. for camping, you are likely to take a combined "spork". If you want mobility, you obviously will like smaller or combined devices. Every once in a while I empty my pockets and look at the stuff there - mobile phone, shuffle, keys, purse and I even used to carry a PDA around. I want all that stuff combined in a decently sized thing - And I think we will see that in a few years. There are solutions for this need now, I know... They are just not good enough(tm pending)
You must be either kidding or coming from some ancient times in your time machine... At least we have a _slightly_ likeable natonal soccer team by now. Thats a real progress!
Although saving data in memory is useful, note that files get cached by the OS. Session handling in PHP is using files, too, and is "just fast enought" (TM pending).
ICQ is still the big thing over here in germany. I have only two people that use AOL on my contact list, none use MSN, none YIM. You can add AIM-Contacts through any ICQ-Client and vice versa by simply using AIM handle or ICQ number... You can even _connect_ to the AIM Server with your ICQ data and it uses your contact list! The problem about it is your contacts show up as ICQ numbers, not names. Even regarding using AIM-Contacts over ICQ servers I still prefer a multi-protocol client so that I don't show up im AIM as 98667484 or whatever my ICQ number is.
I once tried to drop adium in favour of iChat (can do only AIM) because it's a nice software, but all my contacts showed up as numbers (as explained) and I had to enter their names manually. I switched back. It even messed up the server-side list, I sometimes use a WAP ICQ service and it started to show only numbers, too. maybe with Jabber support in Tiger I will try again.
The Opera 8.0 Beta 1 for OSX is only a few days old (I think it was released the same day as the other 8.0 finals). The few-months-old version is Opera 8.0 Preview 1.

That's the reason why "{" should have a newline in front of it!

The question is: How long will software vendors ship fat binaries. When will they switch to x86-only?

Sorry, was just too tempting...
And really, how difficult would it be to make a mouse, trackball, keyboard, or some sort of high-precision gamepad controller?
They are on the market for most of the consoles. Even the SNES had a mouse. But how do you use a mouse and a keyboard sitting on the couch?

They use a combined fork/spoon/knife thing because it's easier to carry. That was my point, you are nitpicking.
All three of you will have to look for that rare device that specifically meets your needs - same as to today.

Only if you click them.
