I don't know what Dvorak's been smoking, and don't want to help bump up his salary by following the link to read his fluff online, but so far everyone I've talked to is severely underwhelmed by Vista and can't see spending all that cash for graphics and memory hardware they don't need.

If you buy it fresh, and then turn it into a server, the only help you give them is the economy of scale, but you actually decrease their profit - both by lost game sales and by literal loss.

My point is that a name can have multiple meanings. In fact, some people have names that "translate" as nice names, but have an extra meaning that is a very funny joke.

I remember that my family name in German, when it had two hyphens, sounded like such a very funny joke, which would cause Germans to raise their eyebrows or chuckle - luckily, the American (shorter) version doesn't have that effect.

Well, that makes sense. For those who don't know, the Wii is really a souped-up GameCube with Wifi and wireless controllers, and some extra stuff for the motion and controllers - but it translates into a similar input system. So "converting" a game for the Wii from the GameCube shouldn't be too hard.

I agree, saw a G4 review of the PS2 (3?) version of Devil May Cry and based on what I've seen (and many manga and anime related series), think that would work really well with the Wii controllers. Just think - Wiimote as both sword and gun, maybe with the nunchuk having the switch between the two and special moves using the buttons.

That B button on the Wiimote seems to be hard to remember when bowling. Hope it would work well when shooting.

I agree, having two player Samurai games in the US and Canadian markets would be a big seller. Red Steel was kind of a first try at this, but I think we both mean the kind of games we see that have G4 game reviews saying "Japan only" for the PS2 or xBox360 - these would sell like hotcakes in the US!

Not hard to do, just hire some locals to translate - even if the translation wasn't flawless (e.g. "I slice you like sushi, jumping boy on rock!") it would still be oh so fun!

We got our Wii at midnight Saturday 19th as well (EBX), and playing it a lot too, including having friends over. Bought Zelda, Excite Truck, and Rayman's Raving Rabbids. Made about 8 Miis and used them to play on the (sadly) single controller/nunchuk. At Wii Sports, our goal is to get our age down, and have done a lot of team bowling, but have played tennis golf boxing (workout!) as well. Fun! Two of us have played Zelda, it takes a long time, and the jumping thing takes a bit to figure out the best way to do it. Yeah, wolf is sometimes irritating (anyone talked to the puppy yet?), but fun game. Rayman's the most fun title, although tossing cows is a lot of work, but remember to sit on the toilet and get those skills down. Love the dancing! Still have to figure out if our Net is not functional or what - it seemed to work and then not - may have to recall it (bummer).

Basically, a wonderful game console for the whole family, any age range. Will try to get to Excite Truck on the weekend.

My son loves the two snow days he's had to play with it.

you're both right. Fils is either son or wire. Aime is love or like. Masculine of course.

So, technically, it's Son-Loved. Which in English can also have a dual meaning.

And in French, having two or three meanings is a grand coup and a really good thing to do.

So, think of it as Wire Lover, Loved Son, or Sun Loved - all meanings are valid.

ah, but I was pointing out that, while the xBox360 and PS3 lose money on thier consoles - only now has the xBox360 loss dropped to reasonable levels, a year after introduction, the Nintendo consoles make money from day one.

Thus, they can sell dev kits for $2000 for the Wii instead of $20000 for the xBox360 and PS3.

    And drop prices on games.

  17. Re:Is Wii fun? or is it sweet sweet money? on Third Place Is Fine By Nintendo · · Score: 2, Informative

Surely you know that most of the money the console manufacturers make is from per-game licensing fees? The console isn't sold at much of a profit (if any). So it is, in fact, crucial that the console manufacturer ensure that good games for their platform keep being produced, and that you in fact continue to buy new games for the platform.

Ah, true for PS3 and xBox360. In fact, PS3 loses anywhere from $240 to $306 on each PS3 sold.

But not true for Nintendo - they make money on both the GameCube and the Wii.

Which is one reason why Wii games are cheaper, IMHO.

I'm waiting until 2009 to buy mine, when they're cheap. At that point, I'll probably get a new game console too.

But for now, bleeding edge at a $4500 cost ($2000 HDTV plus $2000 speakers plus $500 PS3 (or $600)) just seems like a waste.

I'd rather play fun games that exist today on my Wii.

Perhaps I'm feeling excessively pessimistic today, but I think the hill you've got to climb is steeper than that as evidenced by the shocking (IMO) lack of concern about the status of the US' Social Security system.

Not really. A carbon tax is more important, in that the cost to fix global warming will be ten times more expensive if we wait than if we deal with it now, and that it could soak up 10 percent of our GDP worldwide dealing with it when it happens - as it is already (storm damage, etc).

Social Security is easy to fix. Remove the earnings cap entirely and you have surplus city until 2150 or more. No change in tax level or age limits. Just one simple fix.

And if the Wii starts ramping up support, it's quite possible that many who planned on getting a PS3 before, ended up forgetting about it because they're perfectly happy with the Wii - which they could at least obtain.

This was evidenced by a story in the print edition today of the Wall Street Journal (expensive subscription required), which said that a number of customers online who initially searched for a PS3 switched to an easier to purchase Wii on failing to secure the PS3 in visits to commercial store websites.

Once the installed base of satisfied users is there, it's more a matter of how many Wii games they'll buy - and how many fewer PS3 games will be sold, that dooms Sony's marketing projections.
