  6. This happens all the time... on Microsoft Brand In Sharp Decline · · Score: 1

Actually, the fluctuation in MS brand power (whatever that is exactly) is probably normal for any company that has been in business for a long time. MS used to do more mainstream advertising. I remember lots of ads for XP, but none for Vista (that I can remember).

In the minds of most people (not us folks here on software and hardware boards etc), MS, as an OS, is a mature product and as a result only something really new like the 360 garners much attention. The joe-sixpack crowd isn't moving to vista because they hate it, they aren't moving to it because they are still using that 4 year old machine to browse and e-mail.

A lot of brands fluctuate up and down. I wouldn't take this rating as anything more than a snapshot. Reading anything else into it is iffy.

  7. It's True on US Ignores Unwelcome WTO IP Rulings · · Score: 5, Informative

The US has more trade agreements with Canada than any other country and in Canada's experience it is absolutely true. The US government's negotiators howl about DRM, our approach to health care, pharmacuticals, gay marriage, drug "leniency" etc, etc while ignoring rluling after ruling not just by the WTO, but by the NAFTA boards, and other committees that supposedly govern bilateral trade. Largely they do it because they can get away with it.

I have no doubt that the US will recover from it's financial woes. The world economy is changing though, and competition for resources is increasing. The US's negotiating position is changing as well. Instead of being the one of a few major buyers of commodities, they are now among many. Ignoring multilateral trade rulings as a routine is going to end as a consequence. At least if the US government is smart about it.

  12. Re:IE8 Features on Internet Explorer 8 Beta Features Revealed · · Score: 1

It's not about bitterness, it's about insecurity for some, and about making jobs easier for others. On the insecurity side, the if MS really does succeed in improving windows, it makes their position stronger and automatically makes the position of Linux, mac et al weaker (in the view of the insecure). Also, a lot of people have made a lot of money plugging holes in MS products. Witness the howling of "evil" by symantec and macaffee etc when vista cut them out of accessing the kernel, which they never should have had access to in the first place.

In implementing their own code standards (or favouring them) (I am not a developer), it means developers have to make exceptions in their code for MS making more work for them. This is what I have gleaned from reading comments on slashdot over time. Maybe, my interpretation is flawed, but it seems to be more about having to do "extra" work than being impossible to program for...

My theory is that if MS ever really does makes a rock solid, superb OS, a lot of people on this board will piss themselves. Truth be told, they want MS weaker, not better. Whether or not IE8 addresses a lot of MS's problems in the browser arena, time will tell, but I can say that in many quarters, true improvement by MS is feared.

As long as you don't run two 30 inch monitors, any name brand video card for about 200 bucks will give you great playable rates at 1680 x 1050.

A lot of benchmarks imply you need to sell you child to get great frame rates. In the end, playing games etc is the only way to determine real performance. Benchmarks are mainly a marketing tool. Kind of an equivalent of spam's how big you need to be to have a satisfying sex life.
