  1. Re:Can someone please explain... on Windows Vista RC2 Available · · Score: 1

I am running RC2 (freshly installed taking 20 minutes) on a onboard integrated 6150 graphics chip that will run HL2 at low quality and low resolution barely passably.

Dragging around windows is not laggy at all. And it's nice that I can do that with the contents visible without spiking the CPU usage to 100% (uses about 25% CPU).

So you're either lying or you've simply installed the wrong drivers (I'm using the ones that came with RC2).

    Are you actually using RC1?

While I personally feel RC1 (rather pre-RC1) is really Beta3, it is quite feature-complete, stable and very useable as a replacement for XP already.

While trying to use Vista on a machine with less than 512MB of RAM is insanity, if you have 1GB of RAM, it's very likely that you'd have a smoother experience with Vista than XP at this point (rather surprising for me considering the dismal performance of 5472.5).

  6. Re:To be honest on Early Testers Say Vista RC1 Not Ready · · Score: 1

Strange. I'm running 5536 on a 3.0GHz P4 w/HT, 1GB of RAM and a GMA900 graphics chip. It's smoother than XP was on the same machine. Compatibility is WAY up compared to 5472.5 as well. Of course, I can't use Aero Glass, but Aero Basic is quite snappy. Even the Sidebar is behaving itself (makes for a horrible wait for the desktop to show up after boot but I guess that's why MS wants us to use Standby more ), although I'm just keeping it on as a curiousity and as a tester.

That said, I also don't think RC1 (or rather, pre-RC1 for me) is quite ready to be released. Someone else mentioned the UI inconsistencies and I personally also think that is the only real showstopper right now. Much of the OS works as advertised now; just don't install it on a machine with less than 512MB of RAM and it's likely to be a decent experience. Not everything is bad of course, some things like the new Start Menu I really like, but inconsistencies and odd placements just make for irritation.

Took about 25 minutes to install pre-RC1, from bootup to desktop fully loaded. Seems like they've seriously improved that installation time. The test computer I put it on is only mid-ranged at best (and maybe even lower-end by now). So far it's quite snappy. Too bad IE7 mucks up rendering /. randomly.

This is the way it works:

You can either be a limited user or an "administrator". By default in the current beta you're an "administrator".

What this means is that everytime an action is undertaken that actually requires administrative rights, Vista will pop up a dialogue (a la security warnings in Internet Explorer) and make sure you really wanted to do that. If you think this would be annoying (and would just train users to click yes) let me tell you that it was actually worse in Beta1.

There it popped up ALL the time and even if a background task does something that requires it, the entire system would stop and pop up the dialogue. At least now it'll just block and wait for you to notice the new task button and deal with it.

If you're on a limited account, you'll have to run whatever it was you were trying to run with the context menu "Run as admin" item. Then you'll have to type the admin password. Then when the program does something that actually requires the rights, it may or may not pop up the UAC dialogue.

At least MS is putting hoops for us to jump through.

Are you sure this is TA you're talking about?

I personally am not convinced that the tactical depth in TA is as high as a game like Starcraft, but your description of TA seems overly simplistic.

For example, two basic units, the AK and the Peewee.

One had a rotating turrent rapid-firing short-ranged plasma rounds. Not too bad for shooting other kbots and can definitely do tricks like circle strafing.

The other had a short ranged missile. Perhaps not so great at tracking a target while moving, but then it has more range and better accuracy.

You can then quickly move on to units that utilize the height of the terrain (artillery) that can lob shells over terrain.

Of course there's the difference between kbots, vehicles (not to mention the different types of vehicles) and air-craft.
