    There's no problem with corporate America using Linux. Its just corporate America are like the dinosaurs. They don't understand why Linux is so good or how it got to where it is. They just think its the next big thing that will make them rich. It won't.

    Linux isn't about making everyone rich. Its about making everyone work together so we don't have to work so hard. And that will make us rich. If you consider time to be some form of money. The money shouldn't matter to us, but for some strange reason its all we think about.

    I crack some games just to save my DVD/CDRW drive. I wish I could get free replacement drives from video game manufacturers, and CDs for that matter.

    I agree. Its good for newbies. But if you ever want to edit your system files by hand you better find some other distro or you might end up spending hours trying to figure out why your changes keep getting reverted.

    True, but I've used SuSE Linux long before their United Linux efforts. I used to like what they were doing with Linux, but after buying 3 or 4 distros at $70 a piece I finally got fed up and now I don't trust them to contribute more than they absolutely have to back to the community. They seem to have forgotten where they came from, IMO.

    Remember, SuSE was in bed with SCO.

    Personally, I wouldn't trust SuSE's CEO to make very good business partners or decisions. His comments carry little weight with me.

    Well, we have a choice to make here. We can either accept the medium as it exists today or create a new one. The new medium can possibly exist without commercials. But its unlikely we'll make any decisions, instead opting for corporations to make them for us.

    I'm already there. I watch TV on my LCD monitor in my living room. All the content is stored on my network. No commercials.

    Disclaimer: I'm a Linux Zealot.

    Microsoft might be able to maintain market share by integrating things like 3D animations, better audio/video support and possible voice recognition in their software. If they do this right it could take up to another year or two for OSS to catch up again.

    That's it exactly. Laptops. No firewall can protect you when your users take their laptops home and connect them through dial-up. They sit right on the net, waiting to pick up any viruses and they come their way. Then they walk them right past your smiling face and plug them into your network at 8 AM like good employees.

    A) Should more people work from home?
    B) Should we expect people to secure their own computer?
    C) Should we outsource a solution?
    or
    D) Give up, we've outsmarted ourselves, once again.

    What bothers me about this stuff is we're supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. Stoping everyone to test for a DUI is accusing everyone of being guilty until they test innocent.

    Why do the Ogg people keep coming up with such stupid names?

    Maybe to avoid trademarks, lawsuits, loss of money, freedom, etc. Its difficult to choose a name someone doesn't claim ownership to these days, unless its stupid or silly or..

    Why can't we just deal with the fact that there are 6 billion people in the world and only 3 billions different names? I don't know, I just come up with these weird unprovable facts.

    Still, I suppose DivX has the most bullshit and adware, ergo greater end-user appeal...*sigh*

    Only in the Microsoft world of candy colored windows and popup adverts. Almost makes using your computer feel just like watching TV. How relaxing.

    Why does anyone still use DIVX? XVID is the real open source MPEG-4 codec.

    Been xvid/ogg/ogm since early 2002.

    Ogg Theora probably isn't quite ready yet being at the alpha2 stage and all. XVID is getting close to their 1.0 release.

    Well, if that's what you want..

    I wouldn't put it past them. Richard Stallman by himself could write many more lines of code if he wanted to. And last I heard the HURD was quickly becoming a usable OS, running most Linux software, etc. All the Linux drivers are GPL so it should be easy to port that code over to the HURD one day.

    Personally I know I'd love to have a pure GNU OS. It would make me feel much better because then I'd know how they would wanted me to use it. To fight the Americanism and commercialism of at least the software markets, but probably all IP based markets.

    Companies like Microsoft should not be allowed to exist even if the American government is too pussy to do anything about it. Monopolies are bad, m'kay.

    Or it could give them the leverage they need to deny funds using the same tactics they used with our public libraries.

    It saves money and gives money to the people who need it in the long run.

    And who needs it? The homeless or the government employees implementing such a tracking system? Why not put all that extra money into the hands of the homeless?

    Seriously, if we want to do away with the homeless the most efficient way is to just kill them. Why waste resources?

    Does Microsoft provide this feature? Because systems administrators don't grow on trees, y'know, specially certified trustworthy ones.

    Seriously, there are competant NT admins in the world.

    I still don't see how an insecure OS is a user issue. I have many other operating systems that have never been attacked by a worm. Perhaps Microsoft should do something to make their systems secure. Is that not part of their trustworthy computing initiative? What's taking so long?

    No solutions are feasible. Not if we can't agree on them.

    First I think we must to convince half the population that we have a problem to begin with.

    Its just like Microsoft. You can say they're a monopoly. You can say they're insecure. You can even offer a free alternative that is 80-90% compatible. But nothing you do will ever be good enough.

    Because you are not the authority. And right now everyone believes that the authorities know what's best. This stuff is just too difficult for a none-Ph.D. carrying professional to think about. I mean, are people without a Ph.D. even considered a professional?

    The problem is human nature, and the only way to solve it is communication, education, and many things we just don't want to do.
