They should use open source crytographic methods. That way the whole community would be able to contribute towards the effectiveness of copyright security, and they would be protecting not only the consumers' best interests, and also the consumers' best interests.

  5. Random information on Resurrection Ecology Gives Life to Old Eggs · · Score: 1, Interesting

There is a size limitation of about 14 micrometers beyond which scientists are unable to resurrect dormant eggs, or so a biologist uncle of mine explained. They hope to break that barrier by first reanimating the constituent cells of the eggs as opposed to merely attempting to reanimate the entire egg. He also stated that this latent capability is singular to oceanic life forms, and even in theory does not extend beyond oceanic life forms, because only oceanic eggs are inherently anhydrous, even completely immersed in water, which contributes remarkably to their longevity. I don't see what practical purpose any of this information serves, but if it eventually makes lobster cheaper, then I'm game. Also, all the aforementioned is completely made-up.

  6. Re:Alternatives have more attractive free software on What Happened to Simputer? · · Score: 1, Insightful

Most everyone, particularly in third world countries, knows you can take a computer with Linux on it and throw on a pirated version of Windows. Thus if you can purchase a computer with Linux on it, and throw Windows onto it for free, this effectively takes away any incentive for purchasing a Windows computer. In theory, then, a Linux computer will be preferred to a Windows computer, because with the Linux you know you're not paying for any software. The reason Linux computers don't usually sell so well is because, incidentally, the hardware onto which Linux is placed is usually very budget-tight and low-end.

  7. Can't make 'em cheaper? on What Happened to Simputer? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Fry's Electronics (electronic store chain based in California) has been making wonderfully crappy 199.00 dollar computers for years! They run Linux, and are cost-efficient in every respect. Are these other people aiming for a massive profit margin, or are they just unable to replicate the technical efficiency of the local computer-monger?

  8. Viability of recommendations. on Aggressive Network Self-Defense · · Score: 4, Funny

While his proposed recommendations for network defense appear viable, nothing is more effective for protecting your computer than sucker-punching a random script-kiddy in the groin at a local LAN party.

  15. American issue on Anti-DMCA Petition in Canadian Parliament · · Score: 0

Of course the U.S. is going to compel other nations to follow in its stead. It produces more music than any other country in the world, so it has the most to lose in an issue like this. If it makes a decision regulating certain aspects of copyright, and Canada decides that it should be free to do whatever it wants with U.S. copyrights and music, regardless of what our Legislation and courts have said, then the U.S. law loses a lot of its effect. The U.S. has always claimed its intellectual property at an international level, and unless you're a communist, you can see why the U.S. would have an interest in protecting its own economy. Now if a country like Albania were to demand that the U.S. conform its laws to prevent copyright infringment on Albanian music, you can see the absurdity, because no one has ever downloaded a song from Albania. But you can see that the U.S. imposing laws makes a lot more sense. Anyway, if Americans are prohibited from downloading music (which I hope will never happen), then Canadians should not alternatively be able to download American music. And you can make all the claims you want that all you download is Celine Dion and Alanis Morissette, but I'm pretty sure Canada downloads a lot more music from the U.S. than its own soil.

Also, do Canadian students elect a class president, or a class prime minister? Just a question I've had for a while.
