Ummm...this is OK, but I think a WORKING mp3 Tagger would be far, far more helpful to most. Perhaps they could redirect some of their efforts into this truly needed utility?
This doesnt sound much different from independent subcontractors in the high-tech fields. On a recent client in Washington DC, most vendors (i.e. pimps who set up an interview) kept 35 (normal case) to 65% (extreme case) of the programmers' wages. I'm talking about 1099s where no tax or anything is due. This was the case across several vendors at the client site, granted the client was a bureaucratic semi-governmental agency. I hear spreads are lower at other client sites, but the sheet thought of a vendor keeping $120,000 to $180,000/yr for setting up an interview is absurd to me.
I dont understand how Haliburton and Kellog, Brown & Root can walk away will billions or logistical work while true research and hard work by our next generation of scientists isnt worth $2m?
During the first bubble, we had wild stock prices. Seeing that most of the new back of dot com's are not public, are we making this claim simply based on the purchase prices of a handful of private companies? Seriously, its nothing like the dot com boom of 2000, where hundreds of shell companies went for their golden IPO.
Eventually everything will be done by computers and robots. Why deny the inevitable? Just sit back and enjoy, until they take over, at which point we're screwed anyway.
>. When traffic drops off, so does revenue. Then there's a frantic attempt to boost revenue by making the ads more intrusive, usually accompanied by layoffs. This drives away users.
I dont know about traffic, but Deviant Art seems to have unclassed their website with silly smiley faces. This is a superb site with better content (IMHO) than ANY other 2.0 site. An attempt to reach out at teenagers with no eye for proper web design? Who knows...
I gained A LOT of weight during this big system rollout several years back. One noticable change? clothes are tighter and there is less room to breathe. So I took smaller breaths. I've heard more oxygen to the brain helps in all sorts of ways. Perhaps this is one (of many?) obvious reasons why obesity could lead to lower IQs.
...they want to do this not just in airports but everywhere? (or just in major cities to start with, since you'd need receivers.)
I dont disagree with what they are doing. I disagree with where it will lead us.
One must wonder what will grow out of Iraq in the next 20 years given the massive amounts of Depleted Uranium weaponry the US has littered the place with.
NYMEX *is* taking risk, but it reduces most of it by MTM (the daily exchange of money based on futures price increases or decreases.) In theory, if there is a drastic one day drop and a party cannot meet margin requirements, the exchange can end up losing money. This risk is generally limited because price swings are generally small enough to allow margin requirements to prevent complete illiquidity. Keep in mind that the market is required to deliver on the contracts, it is the middleman in the trades since this is not an OTC transaction. There is no counterparty to my future, NYMEX is the counterparty.
This is exactly my point. Unfortunately, decisions for corporations are made on a quarter-by-quarter basis. At best, two or three year foresight is used by companies like MSFT who have long product cycles. Politicians use [length of term]-length decisions. How do we get the Establishment to think long term? Hasnt worked for Social Security in the US. We know FOR A FACT that Social Security WILL run out in 2024, but we havent done anything about that.
Give up people. Commercia interests are too powerful to care about Global Warming. Heck, they cant manage to fix things that will affect us in 10 to 20 yrs (social security, balooning health care.) Who cares about something truly long term?
Please correct me if i'm wrong, but I do think that we're screwed on this one...
The winner will be whoever is most in the interest of The Establishment. That will determine whether crucial issues such as voter fraud even enter the national debate. One must wonder why the NY Times and Washington Post, supposed "liberal media" centerpieces, do not even confront the likely truth -- that the last two elections were likely stolen. Isnt a full investigation in the national interest? Or is that just unpatriotic?
The current batch of video games are nothing but an unspoken "plan" to desensitize youth to violence and killing with the hopes of creating better soldiers for the coming clash of the civilizations. The government will never let such suits go through.
>> So why aren't you stopping the destructive people in your midst, to show that you're actually committed to peaceful speech
What exactly do you propose the peaceful protesters to do -- arrest the rowdy protestors? In case you dont understand the situation, I cant exactly go up to a random protestor and "arrest" him. I will certainly not hit them. And this isnt a situation that lends itsself to persuasive conversation, probably too loud for that.
So basically, you think that unless I can control the greater American population, I (along with them) should be tazed?
I think we should taze you unless you build up your logic skills.
>> You can't treat a subhuman like a human
The problem with this is your *definition* "subhuman." Many old-school southerners dont consider blacks humans. Many rich New England WASPs dont consider hispanics humans. I have heard this with my own ears at work. They treat minorities like roaches. Many republicans and ultra-conservatives dont consider Arabs humans. Should all these "subhumans" be tazed?
Make no mistake - Neoconservatives, US Hawks and the Israeli lobby WILL get what they want. The formula is simple, it has been used over and over:
- Get FOX News to frighten the daylights out of Fundamentalist Christians and other uneducated Americans (70%)
- Get The Wall Street Journal to frighten the daylights out of seemingly educated Americans using twisted logic and spin (15%)
- Put down actual educated Americans (15%) with catch phrases like "cut-n-run"
- Get Network Television to air shows demonizing Persians (i.e. 24, Threat Matrix, etc.)
- Lobby (i.e. BRIBE) Congress to attack regardless of logic or cost
Iraq 2003 isn't the only example. Iraq 1990 is an example, Iran-Iraq is an example, the fifty-five year holocaust of Palestine is an example. Follow the above steps and all manner of evil is achievable.
Best of all, with each puff of smoke in Iran, our stocks will rise. Our 401ks will rise with each child killed in the middle east as we manufacture more and more weapons. The agony will be temporarily relieved for us as we see double digit growth of our defence stocks. We will want to believe the lies, we will want to ignore the misery.

The keyword here is "EXAMPLE." FOX News is an example, NYTimes, Connie Chung, most of mainstream media is biased.
I chose FOX news as an EXAMPLE, because it is a wildly extreme example. They will yell at a person who even thinks of mentioning the other side. Then they will call them unpatriotic. It is unpatriotic to think that global warming is taking place. It is unpatriotic to think that soliders dont have enough gear. This is an example of a repressive regime.
NYTimes is no better, their one-sided views have caused my damage. But FOX is an easy target, as they dont even pretend to be fair or balanced, they just bound on the truth until it is bloody and cannot speak.

Editorial Oversight does not necessarily lead to fair and balanced articles, or even truthful articles. For a great living example of this statement, pick up a copy of The New York Post or tune into FOX News.

By these standards, 15% is great.

Have I gone stupid, or did this article make no sense. How did this make it on Slashdot?

Why not place a giant padlock and chains all over it?

Or slashdot! Gotta reserved 1hr a night for that!

What is wrong with you people? The top 5 are undeniably: 1. Legend of Zelda 2. Civilization 3. Super Street Fighter II 4. Dune II 5. Doom

Probably because their countries have been destroyed by America or Israel.
