Well, actually, in Vista and KDE world I would count that until it is usable after logon.
I mean I took Vista for a test drive (that lasted 10 months) last year and the boot time (stage 1 - to login screen) was +- comparable to Kubuntu however after logon it kicked off some bloody files indexing and that rendered the PC quite unusable. I assumed it would do this while screensaver was running but no, it pretty much had impact on usability during the first 40minutes or so - until I turned that completely off.
Similarly, now that I returned to Kubuntu, after logon I get system services starting and then apps/applets like KGPG, Kopette etc. These of course depend on what was running before shutdown.
After all this I can only start using the PC "seriously" for my work.
I should also say I am not big fan of "minimize the boot time", I just simply do not see the point. The OS needs to boot various services and stuff and I prefer it does that upfront and then goes out of my way. Also, maybe it is because currently it all takes less than a minute on my Kubuntu and... so what?
To be honest 99.99% of the people that use computers don't care if the driver is FOSS or not. The majority of these card are used on Windows boxes so FOSS doesn't matter to them.
Still, you can't get "the Year of the Linux Desktop" when your PC is headless.
IMHO best bank security & convenience ever is what my bank uses: theirs app in my mobile SIM card is receiving unique, generated code sent always when I am logging in.
Anyone who would need to log in must:
know my number
know the pincode to the SIM card app
..and have the mobile...
I like this beacuse I do not need to carry any extra device/gadget and still it feels rather unbreakable. Needless to say you can disable the app with the bank (like credit card) in case you loose the mobile.
Went to Wendy's the other day and got a #2 combo because it looked pretty awesome on the order board. Got back to the office and opened it up to discover something pretty gross looking, a mash of squashed bun and grey meat.
When I experience something like that, I always think of D-FENS.
For those who have not seen the movie yet, I highly recommend it.

Seriously, whatever you say about Java was pretty much true at the end of 90's. It has changed quite a lot since, you might want to take a second look after those 9 years.
Since you do not mention your OS I assume Win 98 or (alas) ME. I honestly do not think even XP (and beyond) nor KDE/GNOME, would give you really responsive and usable environment these days with 256MB. By usable I mean doing more tasks at once than just doc editing.
OTOH you have no problems with too many tabs open in yours MSIE4.5 and Netscape is dying anyway:)

Oh nice, a link to Aljazeera. That will really look great in the server log.

Looks like I won't be allowed to follow The Office, s05 and will need to do Torrent once again.
Wondering if that restriction is the same for downloads...
And, BTW, DVD was supposed to have superseded CD by now.
Oh, how much I wish this NEVER happens. Unless they change the way DVD player is operated - i.e. largely with the menu on TV. It is not built to play music comfortably; to simply put in CD, hit play or random button (and maybe "program" button and numbers of tracks).... and walk away.
No, ours digital age usability gurus let you put CD (in DVD), then conveniently look for a remote, turn on TV, browse through a maze of menus and press "random" there.. and do not even try to programm just the tracks you want to listen to. By the time I would do that the CD will be entirely played anyway.
I am totally terrified that my CD player will break because it is almost impossible to buy decent, not top hi-fi class and expensive, new CD player like 10 years ago. When looking for CD player they always wanted me to get to buy DVD. Trying to explain the difference - just technical & operational not even the sound difference - was useless. Noone gets it at the shop. Am I old?
No, that is definitely bad idea. As European being in India many times (to get ours sw installed there) I do not recommend that as working place.
cultural differences are high. Really high.
at work you expect things to get done. In India, nothing happens for days/weeks even if you bitch about it every day. Then you get it done yourself anyway
bureaucracy is high, clerks are more self important than in any EU country or US
after work entertainment is rather limited to drinking. In not so nice places. Or in nice places but you get all your salary probably burned there because you pay for being at the place where the glass is actually clean
I could probably go on but my mind has apparently blocked out further memories.
Well, this is all true if they let you in. When I applied for the visa first time they asked what will I do there. Hearing that I would install SW, the reply was "India is the biggest SW industry, we do not need your SW, we can make ours. No visa for you.":)
Feel free to mod me flamebait or troll but my Indian experiance was really bitter and sad.
Google certainly won't be licensing out BigTable anytime soon. And certainly not for small-scale uses. Maybe not really Google but you still have hypertable and Hadoop
(snip)... However, I don't see the logic behind this move...(snip)
The outcome is that they are making a platform with a high degree of Apple lock in more attractive to consumers.(snip)

From Sun's perspective? To keep the Java promise "write once, run everywhere" and/or, if you want to, to keep developers "lock-in" with Java. (*)
From developers perspective? For developers it is just great news as the same JME app will (most probably**) run on iPhone as well as on S60 or any phone supporting JME and selected profiles.
From users perspective? The same as for developers minus developing the app:) That is, if I have iPhone, use important JME app there and find out that iPhone is lousy I can buy S60, Treo, HTC or whatever that has JME. I can be (almost**) sure that my crucial JME app will be working there pretty well.
Actually having JME in iPhone prevents Apple lock in as you can freely switch phones being sure yours apps will move with you happily anywhere you go.
my 2c.
(*) Still, I personally do not see any lock in there as Java world has evolved the way it has. It feels more like community than big company driven (evil) platform that will lock you in to theirs tools/HW/services/SW. IMHO the "atmosphere" in Java world is quite different than in.NET world.
(**) Well, reality bites sometimes and JME implementation behaves sometimes strangely on different phones etc.
If Bush created a plan to control the press corps in the US via a groomed method you'd be up in arms. I always thought this mission is accomplished with Fox News.

It'll be interesting to see how this dovetails with any effort to create Red Flag Linux to move away from the Wintel-opoly.
And once they do that, it will be "Year of the Linux Desktop", finally. Can you imagine the shift in OS market share?
