  1. Re:Tyan on Illicit Leaky Capacitors Killing Motherboards · · Score: 1

I bought a tyan motherboard (Tiger MP, Dual Athlon) about a year ago. The first one was dead on arrival (wouldn't post at all, regardless of what I did) so I had to RMA it. The one that I got in replacement worked but had some funky problems with the IDE controller, but it would post and let me install my OS of choice so I just dealt with the problems. After about 8 months of solid use the IDE controller finally crapped out for good and I have to RMA the board again. I have a friend that has the same motherboard, and after a few months of use it wouldn't run in dual cpu mode, so he's using it as a single processor workstation now.

I realize that this may not have anything to do with the capacitor problem mentioned in the story, but I don't think I'll be buying any more tyan motherboards.

I've been using ABIT products almost exclusively since I first started building computers at home and at work, and I have been totally satisfied with their quality and features. The few times I've used ASUS stuff I've been annoyed with little things like mislabeled IDE controller ports.

I disagree with this. Making it mandatory that the CD be in the drive while you play is the stupidest form of copy protection there is. This is a perfect example of screwing over the majority of customers just to stop a few incompetent people from copying a CD. Anyone with any brains at all can download a crack from any number of sites to remove the CD check. I do it all the time with games that I have paid for.

I've copied plenty of games and given those copies to my friends in the past. In my experience the only thing that has kept me from doing that is when the game ships with a CD key that you need to play online. I'm not going to give someone my cdkey and then run the risk of not being able to play whenever I want to.

Sound like flamebait but I'll reply anyway.

Granted, you won't notice any difference past your monitors refresh rate. But there are a lot of reasons to have a much higher frame rate. When you do a benchmark you are getting the AVERAGE framerate, there are times when the actual framerate is much lower than this. I figure if I can keep my average framerate above 100fps then it shouldn't dip below my refresh rate.

One other things is that you might be able to get 200-300fps in quake3 right now, but some benchmarks of the new Unreal engine on anandtech show that those same cards that are spanking the q3 engine will be spanked by the new unreal engine. And I don't imagine the new Doom engine will be any easier. Having extra horsepower now helps when the newer games come out.
