IE is a complete pain to code to , I have it installed on my Mac just for testing compatability if i ever feel like doing any web stuff. I end up making a php checker page sometimes to just redirect people to a striped down non complient page if they are using MSIE. Well thats ok for me , most of my stuff is for Unix type OS or mac so there isn't really much alternative , though i have got complaints from people whop use IE saying my site is broken , the reply is awlawys (if they are using MSIE) "No your browser is", Simple as that... though most people dont really have an option like that. The only awnser has been to code in some javascript check to alter parts of the page based on the browser .;) When i was working as a web dev , there were days when i felt like taking a flight to the MS offices and going "Standards complient " on the IE team.
hahah Give that man the pet poodle, you beat me to the punch with that one. I was going to say.
How can a man who's about the size of an ant next to these beasts do such a thing armed with only a sword and a bow and arrow? That's for you to find out."
I dont know , But he could try asking a boy named Link
This is exactly why the Xbox is a problem for MS , They didnt sway many hardcore console gamers , They bit straight in to their own PC-Gaming market. The Xbox to me is a console i could never understand , Its loud , ugly , large and is basicaly an x86 pc (which makes hacking easier so that is a plus ). It really featured non of the things i love about console gaming,Most of the A1 title games are PC ports or PC games in console form, oh and i didn't like halo.
This machine did not appeal to me , I am unashamedly a console gamer. I do my Pc gaming on Wine or native linux or mac and thats rare, only for a few games really (morowind , NWN and UT(99,2k4))
Thus the Xbox held no appeal to me , I may be tempted to get an xbox360 as i could do with another ppc box to hack away at , The games i doubt will intrest me as they continue to focus on PC style games mainly i suspect.
The only money that has ever been in the Home console market has come from games , Hardware is near unilateraly a loss for companys (The other question i have strongly in my mind , is the xbox seems like MS abusing a monopoly to push into the new market).
Agreed , though my thinking on if cell will live up to the hype is more that Allt hree consoles on paper are otherwise pretty equal(bar nintendo who god knows what they ahve planned but i cant wait to find out) And the marketing will be as strongperhaps MS will learn the leasson) So the only thing really waiting to edge out the competition this time around is those three things (and a few hit titles but i really can't theorise as to what those will eb yet) Cell could be the gold ticket to push the ps3 above the rest , as i imagine they will all offer simmilar multi-media capabilityss.
Honestly im not normaly one to put it down to power(my main computer is a eMac with a 1.25ghz g4 , not my Athlon 65 or a g5) but all else being equal the deciders are going to be MSs marketing in japan and what sony have up their sleves with Cell
Some form of Generic Administration Qualification (proclamation nation station.. cant resist).. Not Generic in the sense of "Average and undistinguishable course" but generic in the sence of "Teaches you to handle Administration not a specific system" , they are not cheap , well the good ones , But they do help alot.I am over the other side of the pond possibly from you (Unless your nick if volkov as in folkof;)) So couldn't recomend any over there , but Im sure plenty of folks would be able to point you in the right direction.
"I've gotten by in this industry for over 20 years without any"
Thats just it , back then they wern't needed, and you had the time to pick up a bucket load of experiance which should send you skyrocketing in the eyes of any half way qualified PHB.
If your new , and can't get work then it may be the only way you have to shine above the other applicants.
Dont get me wrong , I really do hate the fact that these stupid bits of paper have replaced the need for competent Human resources departments. Though it apears thats the way the wind is swaying now-a-days.
Well i more mean #1 as in importance , Its the home market for alot of the biggest names in console gaming . and everyone knows how important pleasing the home crowd can be.
Xbox360 has alot of good japanese companys onbaord to make games , agreed MS are doing their best to push into the market(The debate on if they are abusing their monopoly to do this is another thing though). Also will MS be able to market to the japanese gamers this is a big question mark. The advantage this time though wont be in MSs court (Well considering how ***explitived** up the ps2 launch was), they dont have the extra time to trump the other consoles with a more powerfull machine and i doubt sony will repeat the mistakes of last time(for the love of god I hope not).
The key to this (I belive)will be how well cell really lives up to expectations. If as noted Cell is as powerfull as they say it will be then nothing will be touching the ps3 (bar nintendo actualy managing to pull a reveloution out of the um reveloution). I belive the xbox360 will be using a ppc procesor and nintendo will most likely also go that route. So these questions remain...
1:Will cell live up to the hype 2:Can MS market to the japanese crowd 3:What the hell are nintendo up to
He definantly seems to be working for sony(not that i totaly disagree with the dominance of the ps3) , I just cant for the life of me see why we should hold off on investing in the market right now. The main reason i dont think the xbox next will take the market by storm , is unlike the sony ps3 it dosn't have all the markets. Japan and surrounding regions iirc don't even normaly count the xbox , and that is the #1 market. Nintendo will as normall , have the nich and will stay strong unless the reveloution really does as it say on the box. Xbox will play second fiddle , maybe trading places a bit in the EU and US markets and still fail to captre the japanese gamers. Sony will have another hit on their hands and seeing the psp launch line up , they have lernt from the mistakes of the ps2 launch so expect a good one.
So the man is advising that investors hold off on investing right now , a time when the market is mostly weaker and ripe for investment at a cheap price and Telling people to invest when the new consoles are out,you know the time that stocks and many other things will skyrocket...
Perhaps yes they may peak then dip towards the end of the year , but they should definantly skyrocket around the release of the new consoles, holding off is possibly only wise if you intend on investing during the calm before the storm(probably about the same position the market will be in right now , missing out on a chance to take advantage of an expected mid-end of year high).
It hapens every time a new set of consoles are released , the market take very positive swing.. This is why i never listen to analysts
Actualy it may just be a valid defense , it all depends how the case it worded. If it can be made clear they are trying to sue you for theft or misrepresenting the case so as to show you as a thieft as oposed to an "Infringer". Then quite possibly you will have a rather nice defense , as you are by definition not guilty of the crime.
Driving whilst under the influence is a crime and thus cannot be used as a defense, but there is nothing wrong with being a passenger of a private vehical whilst intoxicated, This is why the driver cant use the "Because i was drunk " Excuse in his defense unless he was made intoxicated against his wishes.
The charge should be based on the fact that he decided to pilot the vehical whilst intoxicated and in so doing so caused the death. The defense to me really sounds rather implausable, I mean the passenger must of been half way laying across the middle of the car to do that , and this could have been checked with forensics. Well i guess he is lucky i was not on the jury.
Actualy come to think of some of the Trainees ive bumped into , i think they probably would need a 4 year course just to be able to tell the difrence between patch and cross-over , nevermind the mathmatics behind the distribution of TCP-IP packets.
Totaly true , The speed the industry moves at , you need to be able to adapt or your just going to get left behind(though there is always some call for legacy ). This is why more than nearly anything , the IT industry is an industry for those who live the lifestyle. Hell , I admin for a job and what am i doing in my free time(besides having a glass of martini) well im currently setting up a server just to play around with it and learning a few new services while im at it. Youve really got to have the passion to stay up to date with it all.
I have done both , and honestly i lernt far more from my own studies and on-the job than any structured course work
Never hurts to finish off a degree.. Must say though , PHBs are a total bunch of explitives hee. You know someplaces they do keep a count of certificats for choosing interview candidates, i found this out purely by acident once when my Chainsaw certificate came up in a IT job interview(I used to work as a forest ranger/arboriculturist) as relevant experiance. It turned out the company just took a literal list of the certs/ degrees from the application form and choose canditates due to it...
Sometimes i feel like legaly changing my name to add some letters after it just to bump my wages up a little .
No extra cert is ever worth nothing . It always looks good to the PHBs. However if you want a good way of telling if a cert is usefull to You , then try and think of real world examples of how you could use it,simple as that. They are all only as usefull as what they teach you.
I agree total , I am not a system admin because i thought it was a nice path to the top or a good course to bolster my prospects. I decided to be a systems admin because i love tinkering with systems. Always have , Probably always will.
I learnt mostly from my own experiance( playing around with systems since i was tiny) , partly from work experiance(the way it works outside the sandbox) and partly from Training(the theory behind the reality and a quick start to a new system).
On the job training is the best training you can get , Chances are you would be in a small team and would be able to pick things up far quicker and when you dont you will always have someone in a position to point you in the right direction.
Though a good trade school should also give you a good dose of On the job training to boot , so it may be an option if you cant find a company with a network to risk;).
;) I wouldnt count on that totaly , The trade schools can be very good and give you a more solid view of the way the industry really does work. Universitys are wonderfull things for broadening your horizons to many things and giving you a good expanse of knowlidge on a plethora of topics. However if you really want to get down to working , you will be far better with Work training. That said;) doing both may be an idea.
It depends what you want to do. If your more intrested in the Theory and constructing networks, then the university would be more you thing. However if your more intrested in running systems and their upkeep and maintenance, then the trade school may be far more benifical.
As for Certs , unfortunatly they have become a nesecity in our day and age. A little bit of paper saying your qualified to do A:B:C:D etc are what many employers look at when selecting candidates to interview , but choose carefully. Some really are total fluff whilst others will give you a really solid grounding in a system.
ex-Microsoft CTO Nathan Myhrvold has made many reports to the police about a strange balding man running after him shouting "DEVELOPER DEVELOPER DEVELOPER DEVELOPER"
Intresting side note to that , the origions of the word/name Nintendo.
What does the word Nintendo really mean? The word Nintendo is composed of 3 Japanese Kanji characters, Nin-ten-do. These characters can be translated into a sentence like: "Heaven blesses hard work" but it can also be taken the mean of something like: "Leave luck to heaven", "we do all that we can, as best we can, and await the results" or "Work hard but in the end it´s in the hands of the heaven". Other suggestions are: "Deep in the mind we have to do whatever we have to do" and some people believe that it stands for: "The house where you leave everything to the heaven/fortune" (A Casino).
