I use a special code in the subject line, so that everyone that I e-mail knows it's from me. I use ALL CAPS in my subject line among other things, like ":-)", and I have instructed all the people that I e-mail on a regular basis that if they receive an e-mail from me without all caps, or other identifying codes, then it is probably not from me, and don't open it under any circumstance. This works, and once everyone is onboard for recognizing the code, then they can relax about who sent what. I should point out that this is mainly used for your friends, but if you're really having problems, then you should use it in your professional e-mails as well. It actually brings a more personal service to your clients because they'll feel that your e-mails are special, and that no one is going to get at them. The "us against the world," so to speak, will bring you to the forefront over your competitors.
I had the Timex Sinclair Z80 with the 16K Ram Pack, and I still remember spending hours typing in the code for "Dragon Fight" from Compute magazine. Of course, it was mainly the frustration of accidentally touching the Ram Pack, and having the computer reset, and the lengths I went to so that I wouldn't hit it!lol I used a toothpaste box, and tape to protect it from being bumped...which was a lot and darn it if it didn't work! I also had to raise the computer up on a "Hardy Boys" book as well to prevent it resetting. Man, when I finally finished the program....I was actually disappointed because it made it out to be like it was going to be the shit...nope, but it was fun finally getting it together!lol Thanks for bringing me back, man!
I have received numerous stock tips lately in my e-mail, and other tips, and advice on other products that I really think SCO should know about. I haven't found Darl's e-mail address in order to refer him to these tips, but I have found others...I'm sure they'll be very pleased:-)
"They need a freaking babysitter because most people are innately lazy and what differs from person to person is their own unique ability to disguise this." You need to hire a better HR person if that's the kind of people that are working for you. If you work for me, you should know your job, and need minimal supervision, and if you are needing a lot, then you don't know your job, and I'm going to find out why...plain and simple, people who are whiners, and complainers will get my "full" attention, and if I find out you don't know what the hell you're doing, and you can't be trained...you're gone. That's the one thing I didn't see in your post was that you would work with your staff, and support them...not coddle them, but work with them to achieve. Now, that's a leader, and a great boss. After you're done your work, go and see if there's anything else that needs doing, and if not, then go and get us some coffees....Make mine a large Timmies, 4x4!
I see your point, and I used to try to see both sides of the coin, so to speak, but now I just see them for what they are, and don't try to analyze why they are the way they are. After all, they don't care about you, do they?
I too worked for a small computer software company, but I didn't know that the boss was bi-polar, sprinkled in with a bit of ADD! They had such a high attrition rate, and it didn't dawn on me why anyone would leave such a great paying job. I soon found out, and I also learned that working for a large corporation is much different that working for a small company.
If your boss is an a$$hole in a large company, then you probably have some wiggle room because he or she has a boss over them, and you can always go over their heads. But, if you're working for a small company, and your boss just happens to be the owner/CEO, and he or she turns out to be an insane, lying, backstabbing bastard, then your only recourse is to quit. Plain and simple...start looking for another job as they'll try and take you down with them in their crazy controlled reality, and with that will go your sanity, and it will affect every facet of your life including your family life. Get out while you can.
I can honestly say that I will never, ever allow myself to be treated as badly as that a$$hole treated me. Everyone has a bad day, but to the level that c***sucker was to me, and his entire staff...no way!
You say that he was one of the greats but still and a$$hole, I would have said the same about my past boss, but I just don't make excuses for people like that anymore. Why should I, or anyone for that matter do that?
Guess what I'm not buying anytime soon?

AMD's New DRM
·
· Score: 1
I'll give you 3 guesses, and the first 2 don't count! You've got be kidding me!!! It's none of their business what the hell I've got on my computer! If I don't use any of their newer formats for DVD's does that mean they won't be trying to find out what's on my computer? This is going to be the fastest way for a format to die, and die quick, and also for their company to start losing money real fast!
Peter Gabriel has been advocating this for years, and he actually embraces new technology. Seal actually puts all of his albums on so that you can listen to them...sure, I could pirate them, but then again I really like his stuff, and if he's willing to let me listen to his stuff before I buy it, then I'll gladly pony up for his albums each, and every time...which I have. I also like the liner notes that he adds. Bottom line, give the people what they want, which is accessibility, and no DRM, and actually maybe write something to them in the liners...hey, they're the ones that take the money out of their pockets to buy your albums. One thing, if you're an indie band, the you need exposure, so the chances of being signed up by a huge label is slim, and so charging people an arm and a leg for your stuff just doesn't make sense. Do you object to people posting your stuff in newsgroups, etc? Btw, I'm downloading your stuff now;-)
We've all been spoon feed what the recording industry wants us to listen to, and they've had a strangle hold on the air waves, TV, recordings, and the artists themselves. Now with the advent of internet, it levels the playing field, so to speak, because bands that would be otherwise relegated to obscurity because they could not get a record deal, can supplant this entire process by releasing the music via the internet...of course, we all know this, and if it wasn't for this new process I would never have heard of Machine Men, or DreamLand...etc. What about those hard to find albums? I've tried in vain for years to get some music, and even though they are being advertised on websites as being available, when I go to purchase them I'm told later on that they aren't available because there isn't enough of a demand for the particular album to warrant them making another copy! So here I am, a willing, legal paying customer...now what do I do? Yup, pirate it...they've brought this onto themselves by not embracing the new technology, and instead vilify it as being nothing more than something that dishonest people use. They've got their hands into everything, and I suspect...no I know that they are behind the new fees that are being imposed on online radio stations. If it wasn't for an online radio station, I would never have known about the artist "Biosphere!" I have purchased most of his stuff, and I'm looking forward to purchasing more, but I'm sure that if these new fees are imposed, then "Bluemars.org" will cease to exist. So, all-in-all, I have no pity on them whatsoever, and it is quite strange that since I've started downloading music, I've actually purchased more music than I ever would have before! I literally went 5 years without purchasing one album, or tape (Before mp3's, or Internet) because I didn't like what was being played on the radio, or the bands I liked hadn't put out a new album. Nope, I have no pity for the recording industry, and it is too sad that the only way I can pay an artist that is signed with them for their works is to go through the recording industry, and that is why they are so tenacious about fighting for the "artist's" rights because it will mean that they can be circumnavigated, and the artists will actually make the money for their hard work, and not them! I liken them to being a union that fights, and fights for more money for their members, and then prices them all out of reach for the company to make a profit, and they all lose their jobs because of it! ----This message has been brought to you by "DUH" Magazine!:-)
I don't know if they have become that which we all loathe as of yet. It is my hope that they don't become that, but hey with all that cash, and power, they'll probably succumb to the old adage of "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." We'll have to wait to see what transpires. Fingers crossed
The professor will probably get money from them later on when Google wants to upgrade it, or is having problems with it. When Google wasn't interested in putting out the Google Tool bar for Fire Fox, there were some guys that made their own, and then all of a sudden Google saw the light switch on, and develop their version. I wrote to them about making sure that these guys were compensated in some way for their hard work, and I also wrote to the developers about what I did, and they stated that they really weren't interested in making sure that Google compensated them, but apparently Google did get in touch with them, and for the longest time there was a link to the alternative tool bar on the Google site. I'm not sure if they did in fact compensate them for all of their hard work or not, but if Google wants to live up to it's motto of "Don't be Evil," then perhaps they could at least put the professor on a retainer to help with further development...I would...why not, eh? He's the guy that actually wrote it, so he'd be the go to guy for any further developments, or bugs:-)
Sort of off topic, but interesting nonetheless: In the US it isn't unlawful to not pay federal income tax...look into it. When I saw this film, I was blown away: Aaron Russo's Freedom To Fascism ---> http://www.freedomtofascism.com/
I'm sure that it does what it claims to do, and hey that's great, but they should be putting their best foot forward don't you think? First impressions and all...that was my main point that I obviously didn't get across. I'll be more clear next time.
I thought it would be kind of neat to check it out, but the only way that I could access the button to send my information to sign up was to view it in another window. I thought it was because I was using Firefox, but the same thing on IE, and on the page that has their "Internet Services Strategy" there is a line that goes through 2 paragraphs!LOL Not very professional, and if this is the level of service that they are going to be providing, then what can we expect from them for their OS??? And they stumbled right out of the gate!lol
I used to do tech support for a large ISP, and I always dreaded McAfee because that software, or crippleware as I called it, would always be the cause of most of the problems out there; Norton was also pretty bad as well! The customers would freak when they were hit with the upgrades, and of course it would cripple their machines, and who would they call...yup, us! Then we would have to refer them to the software manufacturers, and these people were not happy at all...especially the somewhat savvy ones that actually seemed to know how to right click! These programs cost the users tons of cash for not only the actual upgrade costs, but for the time spent in trying to configure, and use the programs! Millions are spent every day trying to do simple things like e-mailing, and surfing the internet...simple things should not be complicated for the uninitiated, but then again they need to justify their existence! I use Avast myself, and absolutely no problems whatsoever! Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall is another great program, and is a snap to use as well...to bad that they aren't pre-installed on people's computers!
I agree that there are different stresses, but it wouldn't be like he'd be walking in there, and being made the #1 guy. No, he'd be job shadowing at first, and then moved into the job. My buddy is given a lot of responsibility, and also he gets a lot of job satisfaction. He still has to deal with Noobs, but at least it's not getting someone online just so that they can play Euchre with their friends. All in all, he's much more happier, and making good coin too. Every job has it's ups and downs, but I think he sees more ups than downs with this one.
A friend of mine worked with me at a huge call centre, and he had enough, much like you, with the whole tech support thing babying people with basic installs etc. There is a huge demand for Sys Admins for engineering firms, and these companies cannot afford any, and I repeat any down time whatsoever!
Look into it, and with the credentials that you have now I'm more that sure you'll be able to get a job!
Good luck
I've been donating my processor time for quite awhile now for the Malaria research, and even though the drug companies will probably benefit from my donation, they would not have these breakthroughs if people didn't donate that time, and it is the fact that a breakthrough will be found is what keeps me donating my processor time. It's a great feeling knowing that I've contributed to a possible cure towards this disease! Other projects that could need the services of Grid Computing, I believe that was the original question that was put forth, are imaging analysis (any field), physics (particle research, etc), and I can also see Grid Computing being used also for computer animations where the time to render animations would be greatly reduced, and allowing movies, and shows to be released much faster than before. (With this application, it would be known that you are contributing to a product that a company will be making a profit, and the only reason to do it is get these movies, shows to market faster. I, for one, would love to see a sequel to The Incredibles, and to be a part of that would be fantastic, even to just have my name mentioned in the credits!) One thing that needs to be done for these projects to get the maximum exposure for Grid Computing is to dumb down the process. A Noob would be hard pressed to set up Boinc Manager to do the Malaria research.
It doesn't matter what operating system a "12 O'Clock Flasher" uses because they have absolutely no idea as to what they are doing in the first place! All they know is that they got themselves a computer, and they want to go on that intraweb thingy, and play games like poker with their friends. I speak from vast, vast experience because I used to do tech support for HP, and also Road Runner, and these people seriously don't have a clue! I don't blame them because there isn't an OS out there that is really user friendly...well, dumbed down enough so that these people don't have to think, and that isn't their fault. The only thing that they know is Microsoft as it's crammed down their throats. You can't suggest another OS to someone when you ask them to click on the "Start Button" on their computer, and instead they press on the "Star Button" on their phone! Seriously...would they know how to even put the disk in the drive? Answer: NO! The only way to move these people into the Linux world is to expose the younger generation to what Linux can do for them as the school system where I live has done. Starting someone who is interested in Linux, and has very limited computer skills is touchy, but starting them on the Live CD's is great, but also suggesting OS's like Linspire, etc is probably the best way to go. I actually have to say that Linspire is probably the only one that I would suggest to them. One other point that has to be brought up to these people who have only been exposed to Microsoft is that they will not be able to use the same programs. I actually know of a woman who, when exposed to Linux, suddenly became confused and said, "Why can't I use my programs? This makes no sense...I want my old programs!" Try explaining that in simple terms to them...good luck!
"Don't they have a board? Is it really possible that the board members are just as dumb as the CEO?"
It has never been about proving if SCO owns the code or not, but that the board members, including Darl are making millions off of this. They even said in one of their e-mails that they were rich. They aren't stupid, and they don't care what they say or do as long as they ride this pony for as long as possible...remember, they make sure that they are paid first, and then the rest goes into the lawsuits. The one thing that they were hoping as a bonus is that if they threw enough crap at the courts, then they might just be able to blur their vision enough so that they could get a toe hold, and then run with it, but as we have seen that they have been unsuccessful at this. But, once again, it is about the top people getting rich off of this.
Take a look at who has made this study that "50%" of all piracy comes from Canaduh...The Movie Frigging Industry!!! Where are they getting this data to back up their claims??? Yeah, out of their asses!!! I maybe one of the few people that actually loves going to the movies, and also I buy tons of DVD's! I never download "Cam" movies as it just spoils the whole experience for me. I agree with everyone that if they implement this draconian measure to delay movie releases here in the land of high taxes, and great beer, then it will even further increase piracy. The only real way to stop Cam movies is to advertise that the staff members are patrolling to see if it is happening...of course, the staff members could be doing it themselves.
Has anyone noticed that there are some people getting really rich off of this? It's Darl and his cronnies that are making a fortune on this, and it's always been about this. It's like Vapourware...it's a great idea, but after millions of dollars, and nothing transpires it's just the top people who have made any money. They're going to run the company into the ground, and all of the investors will lose all of their money. Don't kid yourself, Darl and his buddies make sure that they are paid first before they give out any money for this court debacle that they know they will lose. Of course, that's just my 2 cents worth;-)
Ooooh, I see IBM, and M$ going at it, and hey didn't M$ screw IBM with the Operating System...Yeah, that's right they did!LOL This is going to freakin' great!!!
Oh yeah, M$ is very frightened of Linux, and Open Source because look at the deal they made with Corel, so that they wouldn't develop Corel Linux anymore.
I went to her supposedly "Balanced Site", and I see nothing there that would indicate that it is balanced in any way!
Just because she has a "Dr." in front of her name doesn't make her an expert on what is a functional site or not. Besides she's just trolling for responses, so let's let this one die the quick death that it deserves!
Here's the one glaring point that the "Dr." misses, and this is a hugely popular site, so much so that when all of us/.'ers read a story, and if there's a link to it the site can be shut down because of all of the traffic from us, and it even has it's own name...that's right the/. Effect! So, her pathetic opinion does not hold water!!!
Thank you.

Is it really possible that the board members are just as dumb as the CEO?" It has never been about proving if SCO owns the code or not, but that the board members, including Darl are making millions off of this.
Here's the one glaring point that the "Dr." misses, and this is a hugely popular site, so much so that when all of us /.'ers read a story, and if there's a link to it the site can be shut down because of all of the traffic from us, and it even has it's own name...that's right the /. Effect! So, her pathetic opinion does not hold water!!!
Thank you.
