Some games are trying to do this. Racing games are the first that come to mind and all the ones I've heard of use microsoft's Live service, but they allow a great deal of freedom to a roam a game world online and interact with others at random.

On the other hand I think some types (most notably FPS's, RTS's, and TBS) wouldn't work well like that at all... I could sorta see a form of coop FPS, where if while running through the game you could encounter other people also playing the game... That would require alot of changes and it wouldn't work to well for those who don't want to or can't play online. RTS's and TBS's though would be the hardest to implement and I'm not sure anyone would want that even if they did make it...

Also I should point out that free romaing gameplay can sometimes hurt a story, and I for one would like more good stories... Lack of good stories is one of the reasons I haven't bought alot of games lately.

I grew up in a small town with a corrupt police force ruled by a meglomaniac police chief. I've witnessed peopel being arrested and charged with 'crimes' because someone could do it. I've witnessed a 'police officer' blackmail someone who decided there only way out of the situation was to kill the cop (he feared for his life because he wasn't meeting the demands the cop was making). They both died in the end in a gun battle at night in downtown. The blackmailed guy shot the cop twice with a derringer and the cop shot the guy 6 times with his service issue revolver. The funny part is that the police chief covered up the blackmail from the county investigators and made the cop into a 'hero protecting our fair city'.

Fortunately the chief of police had to retire (mandatory retirement age for the state) and without him the police got cut down to two officers who have almost no power and we rely on the state police instead now where I grew up... That MS can make this happen doesn't surprise me one bit.

Her english is fairly bad, so she asked him for help in correcting the grammar and spelling. It turns out she choose to basically make it fluff and her sources where fairly unreliable, she also did a better job at presenting the counter argument to what she stated was her goal in almost every piece of data she cited... The funny thing is after he rewrote it into passable english for her, it was accepted without issue and she went on to get ehr masters degree. This wasn't some no name college she went to either, it was one of the more prestigous on the west coast.

What does this have to do with your post? Not much really, just a chance for me to tell a story about how much academia seems to not care what sources are used or how much work actually goes into the works they accept.

I'd have to not already have mortgages on my house to be able to get one and I think I covered that under loans anyways... A mortgage is a form of loan after all (with house as collatoral). In my case the house in question was my grandmother's and has two mortgages on it, that unfortunately I get to pay off now that she's dead (she has been for nearly a decade now). Sure I got her house, but I also got her debt on said house. I'll still be paying off part of her debt for a few years. It's also not a new house (it's a 1900's colonial house in case your curious) and needs lots of various things done to it. Luckily my dad could update the electrical wiring so modern appliances can't kill the electricity anymore, but even that was fairly expensive for what I can afford to do to it.

Yeah I've heard of brushes... You gonna get out on my roof on either the second floor (where you'd have to climb out a window) or worse the actual roof on the top of the third floor (with no sane access outside of summer with a ladder on the roof below) to do it? I sure as hell am not, I'd rather not accidentally slip and fall 30 feet or 45 feet... I'd be worried about the roof even holding up between my weight and the weight of the snow. The roof over the expansion actually collapsed from the snow about two years ago (in turn I simply tore down the expansion my great grandfather added). The house btw predates the law I mentioned earleir about structures above 30 feet within city limits.

My earlier post was entirely a matter of practicality. I keep hearing arguments like I replied to that seem to not consider real world economics. The average salary in the US is not $50k+ a year. Not everyoen can simply spend money to do these things. I've done as much as reasonably possible for my financial situation and what I can consider reliable technologies to invest in. I reported the results of that & why the others aren't so possible. Someone obviously decided what I said made sense in that way.

I don't have solar panels used for hot water... My house is already built (& I didn't build it), so the cost to change things now is to much for my fairly average salary to cover... I could try to get a loan to pay for it, but that would nuke any savings I'd see for years... I also doubt anyone would give me a loan... Winter would also cause some issues for this... Heating bills are largest in the winter and solar isn't very effective in general when the solar panels are covered in snow...

As for wind.... That's not a change I can make... Even if I did live in a good area (& I think winter would kill any effective use where I live), I'm not likely to be able to put up a tower... First their is the money issue again... Then I think my city would probably frown on it to... When I looked into wireless internet options I found out my area is heavily restricted on building anything over 30" tall... That's probably why I cna't imagine 'playing' it by myself, though we did try a couple times to do 4 person 'games' of it in my neighborhood. We found they were pretty uninteresting, especially when I can drag both the opposing players down the 'field'. I also can't hit a baseball to save my life, pitching to myself is a complete waste of time. I've never been sure why, but I 'played' baseball in a league for three or four years as a kid and I had a horrible batting record where I was lucky to hit one ball an entire season. It's the only sport I've ever played where I couldn't hit the object to save my life, go figure...

While you may not need 22 people to play soccer (I don't think I've ever played an official game or ever had 22 people any time I've played it), it's meant to be played as a team sport. I personally wouldn't try with less than 6 people (2 goalies, 4 'field' players, half on each team). Less than that just wouldn't interest me.

& dear god a girl would ever have to play a sport in PE... They may break a nail or stub a toe...

As it stands I see DDR being a better option since it requires fewer people and a girl may not think of it to negatively...

My experience is that things like subways/other rail lines tend to work, buses on the other hand always seem to suck...

Why? trains tend to go by every 15 minutes or less along their path. Buses (if your lucky) go by every hour. One place I tried taking a bus at had a bus every 2.5 hours. How the hell can that even be useful?

Even so I have a friend here in the US who doesn't own a car and has no drivers license. She takes a bus to get aroudn, because it's the only option in a city of 250,000 for mass transportation. Buses are on an hourly schedule. She wastes an hour or more a day just waiting for transportation. She wastes more time as the bus takes an hour to go from point A to point B, when I can drive there in a car in 20 minutes. That wastes another hour or so each day... She is also nearly exactly 10 minutes late each day because even the earliest bus of the day can't get her to work on time. This is held against her every day and reaslistically without buying a car there isn't a solution for it.

I on the other hand own a car (or at least half of it since few people can actually buy a car without a loan & I've paid off half my loan since I bought it), but I can't own a car and own or even rent an apartment on my own due to the expense. It's the trade off for those making less than $20k/year (I have a networking job in case your wondering, but where I live making more than $20k/year is difficult unless your are management). I can afford a car if I don't live alone. She can live alone because she doesn't own a car.

Fuel btw isn't very cheap. It comes to ~$150 a month for me (& I own a sensibly fuel efficient car). My car insurance is $220 a month. My car itself monthly is ~$300. Which makes fuel half the cost of the car per month. I'd say that's terribly expensive.

Certain locations where literally locked from use by those not members of the farming company and they hired enforcers to keep anyone from interfering... Me and some friends actually tried to 'free' a newb dungeon from farmers who literally had sealed off every room by having one farmer in each room taking all the mobs the newbs needed for their quests. So since Lin 2 had open PvP (as long as you are ok taking a hit to your rep, enough hits and you can't visit towns anymore til you work it off) we went in and started taking out the farmers so the newbs could play again... Well not only did they call on every farmer in the entire dungeon to come kick us out, they called an enforcer... The enforcer was higher level than any of us and, as Lin 2 is insanely unbalanced when the levels or equipment are significantly different, he took us all out... About then our backup arrived, but we were free game since killing people and loosing rep for it makes you fair game for PvP and they just swarmed us as we were rezed...

Almost all the dungeons on the server I used were like that and often fields were worked much the same way.... But the newb areas were the worst off, since it was easy for the farmers to farm in safety & even when people like us would enter to clear the areas for the new people all it takes is one quick call and an enforcer comes... The enforcers have the best gear possible and basically are leveled 24/7... Whole guilds got slaughtered in what we reffered to as the 'Gold Farmer Wars' where enough people got fed up to actually try to fight back... You wouldn't beleive how many enforcers they have... Luckily they never felt like taking a castle in the game (which was the uber thing in Lin 2), many people knew they rivaled any guild (or guilds, best guess placed them at nearly 1200 on our server... guilds were capped at like 50 people) out there and could take them if they wanted to... Anyways, I left before much of that happened...

Oh btw I can safely say they were Chinese since they never spoke enligh, instead they spoke using romanji versions of Chinese words... I speak a little Chinese so I was the interpreter for our side... Probably would have worked better if I spoke better Chinese, but at least I spoke a few full complete sentances in the correct order... The best english from them consisted of "Here we farm. You go."
