  1. Re:position of USB ports on Is the Dell XPS One Better than the Apple iMac? · · Score: 1

Except for some reason, the Apple keyboards often can't supply enough power for a flash stick. Depends on the flash stick. Some work, but probably 75% or more of typical flash sticks don't work in the keyboard ports. It's pretty annoying, as it would be so convenient otherwise.

"Narrow customer base" for iTunes? I'd like to know what the hell you are smoking. It's totally mainstream. iTunes is one of the most popular software applications in history.

What's worse than instant gratification is wasting fossil fuels just to drive down the road to get data. That's much more selfish. Not to mention the petrochemicals involved in manufacturing the DVD and its case, then transporting it to the distributor and then transporting it from the distributor to the video rental store.

  5. Re:Perhaps, perhaps not... on Warner Music Group Drops DRM for Amazon · · Score: 2, Interesting

The difference is that almost nobody is buying video online. Instead, people are flocking to buy DVDs. In contrast, CD sales have been dropping and people are quite comfortable buying music online. One of the reasons for this is that DVDs are much more reasonably priced than audio CDs. Other reasons are that not many people own multimedia or "home theater" PCs hooked up to their TV. They just want to stick a disc in and play on the TV. While almost nobody has a computer hooked up to their TV, almost everybody has either an iPod, or their computer hooked up to some speakers. MP3 downloads (via Napster and P2P) were already in full-swing before the iPod was released, video downloads weren't.

Basically, having 90% of the paid video download market doesn't mean much, because there's not much of a market yet.

But it's a CRT projector. That will kick some serious LCD and DLP butt, quality-wise. 350 lumens is just fine for a small home theater, with the right screen and lighting conditions. You don't want to burn people's eyes out and make them uncomfortable. Installing too bright a projector in a home theater is often worse than installing one that's dim. And for fuck's sake, it's a "batcave" - it's supposed to be dark!

No, it's not. The point of government is to represent the interests of citizens, and to provide services/streangths/infrastructure that is not possible for individuals to provide. Where did you get this idea of government from?

Trying to make good laws is pointless. What one should be trying is making the laws that don't harm.

Well, those would be good laws, so I don't see how it is pointless trying to make them. We should also aim for a government that does more than just not do harm. If that's your goal for government, then we may as well not have one. Government should be much more than that. Please explain why it is wrong for the government to do good things.

  19. Re:It's best that they ignore the tech issues on Capitol Hill Quiet On Tech · · Score: 1

I disagree. It's the gridlock that gives the illusion of safety, and allows perpetuation bad policy - without the gridlock, people would actually see how depraved many of the policies are, and vote them out of office, or start a revolution quicker. It makes it easier to sweep stuff under the rug.

And like I said, it doesn't stop bad laws being passed. The worst laws tend to be the ones that both parties agree on - "terrorism", "drugs", think of the children" etc. The good potential laws are the ones that don't have bipartisan support. So gridlock just makes a bad situation worse, and stops the potentially good (and most controversial) laws from being passed.

It's hard working middle class people trying to acquire wealth that are crushed by the jackboot of confiscatory taxation.

They benefit enormously from taxes building roads, nice schools for their children, etc. Meanwhile, the rich usually send their kids to private schools, and the poor get the worst of the public schools, and often aren't in a position to take advantage of public infrastructure and spending.
