But what of the fact that their own patent portfolio ( a crucial asset in the fight against free software and other competitors ) will them become defanged ?
Yah, I was interviewing someone with a masters in CS the other day and she couldn't tell me how one might implement a linked list. I don't know what they're teaching the kids these days...
That's impossible . I'm in the twelfth grade , and the fundamentals of lists ( theory , along with an implementation in C++ ) are are part of the syllabus for Computer Science . It's just not possible - I'm studying in India , after all , and you over in the US have a better education system .
First , though I hate to be pedantic , the incorrect use of the word hacker gets to me , specially when discussing something as serious as the death penalty.
Secondly , the right to life is inalienable , and cannot be taken away unless you have forfeited ( means of forfeiting it include not recognising it in another human ( which means trying to murder / actually murdering someone ) , or some other action which shows that you do not recognise it as a right ) it.
A crime which results in financial/reputational ( is reputational a word ? ) loss cannot be considered a forfeiture of your right to life , as you have committed no action or made no statement to the effect that your right to life is nullified.
The articel seems to have intended to get a rise out of the technical community , and the best thing I could ask to do it to ignore it and not give the topic legtimacy by discussing it seriously .
If some developement makes your business model unviable, adapt to it . That is how the free market works ( or at least is supposed to work ).
Don't whine , or you'll get crushed by your competitors . A lot of the current system of copyright and patents ( software patents , DMCA , etc ) , are perversions , and do not fit in a capitalist model the USA adheres to ( or is at least supposed to adhere to ).
This whining unnerves me - can they try to legislate away adblock , too ? Or any generic ad-blocking hack in any medium they want to control ? This is just not the way things are supposed to be.
I get sick of these idiots thinking that just because something might obsolete/destroy their business model , they have a right to some sort of protective legislation against that thing . These are the people who are really the enemies of free-market capitalism .
As long as surfing over anonymous proxy is possible , this law is totally unenforceable . Or do the ISPs ban proxies , too ?
It would be trivial for any determined child/teenager ( and let's face it , that is the segment this law is aimed towards ) could easily disable any porn-blocking software , or could surf via proxy , or boot from a Linux LiveCD and rename the blocker executable , or.....
I guess you get the point.
One of the chief rules of lawmaking is never to make a law than cannot be enforced ( like the military rule of never giving an order that will not be followed ).
I am not fabricating this . The fact that it is tasty is one of the essential conditions for its success.
It is tasty because the school has its own staff to cook the food , and the same food is fed to everyone - students , teachers , the cooking and cleaning staff , all the way up to the principal . That ensures that
a) The management is not above the students when it comes to this , and
b) The management has control over everything the cooking staff does , and is affected by it.
It is my firm belief that with a well-managed kitchen in the school itself , there is no reason for any outside food to be brought into the school . And yes , I'm a student . And I still don't understand the wierd and twisted way American schools implement an extremely simple to do thing .
At my school ( in India ) , the system is quite simple , and it works well . Everyone is provided food by the school , and you cannot get your own . The school makes sure that the food is
a) Healthy ( made in a clean and hygienic environment )
b) Nutritious and balanced
c) Tasty
If you meet these criterion , then there is no need to have any alternatives availabele . As always , you can make an exception for special cases.
As an interesting side note , the food given here is all vegetarian , very cheap ( the school manages the whole thing itself , it does not contract it out to any other agency ) , and subsidised by a private trust fund ( it is a private school ) . The cost per student works out to be very low , but you still have no dissatisfied students . No mess , no fuss , and the parents can rest easy , knowing that their kids are getting good food.
I like the school food , but I don't like some of their administrative policies , so here is the link to my school's website to be Slashdotted.
What if someone used metal-based paints to paint the inside of their clothes with mirror-images of shock images like goatse ( using the correct metal to ensure that the thing would show up in glorious , full colour ) ?
A terrorist could do this to discourage the authorities from checking anything else he has too closely .;)
At my school , we have the same problem . But because we had not reached a point where comments were useful , we were asked to comment trivial programs.
I got sick of it , so I commented every cout , cin , and variable and function declaration , but none of the working code . I didn't get marked down , and the teacher hasn't bothered me about comments since .
That is why I hate bureaucracies . I have a similar incident to relate.
At my school , we are a Windows only shop ( might explain why the sysadmin looks harassed ) . Till now , we had a P4 ( with 256 MB RAM ) running as a server ( for a network of over 50 pcs ) , and the thing was running Windows 200 Server . . Now the school chose to upgrade to a newer server ( because of performance problems with the old one ( I could have helped them there - told them to go with a *BSD )) , and they spend a lakh ( hundred thousand ) Rupees , or 2380 $ , on a new Xeon server . But the machine has only 512 MG RAM - and this for a server.
First , they could have waited and got the new 64-bit servers when they came out , and saved on both price and upgrade ability . And even when you go for a soon-to-be-obsolete , more expensive product , you can't bother to spend some money ( when you already have splurged on the main product ) to make it better , or at least up to scratch ? How much does an upgrade from 512 to 1024 cost anyway ?
And these people also refuse to use standards-compliant compilers for teaching CS courses ! We still use Turbo C++ at school . And the fact that I just compiled and bootstrapped GCC 4.0 today just adds insult to injury - knowing that a much better solution is available , but you have to use crap .
Could you run a cluster of these ? Because the only way that hardware of that level would be useful in any serious ( not router/firewall/fileserver etc. ) application would be to make it run clustered - and make it run well .
Remember that you cannot make a system of one smart server , many dumb , OS-less clusters if you do not have the server in the first place .
This is my first post on Slashdot , and it seems to be really a First Post ! Am I the only one to have achieved this ?
On the other hand , this is good news , because I have a friend with a 486 , who wants to use it as a toy , but cannot , becuase no modern OS can run on it .

If you want Stallman-style free beer , you can go here . ;-)
What happens when there is an accident due to someone not noticing the stand ? Seems like a good idea at first , but later . . . . .
This entire article seems to be trollish .

Maybe something like Seppuku-ux .

( A literal pronounciation C - p - p - o - x )
As a guy who is studying C++ , that scares me . . . . . .

If they refuse to develop your photos , why not give them goatse to develop , as a punishment .
;-)
Next time you want to get something developed , you can just say , "Remember last time ? Now , my photos or your eyes !" .

WTF were these lawmakers thinking ?
.... the revenge of the nerds .

What if Google managed Debian ? What would be the release cycles like ? A new release in he trillions of years ?
