    In our microfab class, we calculated that the energy used to fab a cpu outstrips the energy used to run it over the life of the chip. I don't know if you've checked your electric bill recently... but that is a good chunk of change to be blowing on a defective chip from the get-go. If they can increase the yield by reducing the size (while maintaining competitive performance), there is a ton of money to be made.

    Ah, I see you and Dr Josef Mengele would have a lot to talk about. It is a dangerous path to start walking down... those in power deeming which defenseless segments of society are fit only to be used for medical experiments. Imagine if next we lined up comatose patients, premature infants, cripples, the elderly, or some other marginalized group to be used for "the greater good". And don't tell me it could never happen... it has before.

    I'm sure I could sue my friend too if I was a passenger when he crashed. But somehow, it seems to usually fall on the insurance company to pay the medical bills, and all they care about is that the safest driver is behind the wheel. I imagine that if there is a genuine reduction in crashes, insurance companies will provide incentives to cover these types of vehicles instead of more unreliable human drivers.

    it doesnt seem to work that way in practice. Your man Joseph Smith put his own additions in (companion book, but close enough). At some point, someone had to decide to exclude many of the dead sea scrolls. Even looking at different versions today... NIV, King James, NLV, NASB... could be seen as open source modifications, attempts by translators to clarify intent, but little other than interpretation in common with the origonal.

    lowering emissions wont kill people, but it probably wont have a significant impact on global warming either. Even if we stopped burning fossil fuels all together, global warming would merely be slowed. But a significant change in fuel consumption would undoubtedly negatively effect our quality of life, and cause many otherwise preventable deaths. But those are the tradeoffs.

    Ive read that the extra energy costs required in producing hybrids can make them about break-even in terms of total energy consumed compared to conventional cars... any truth to this?

    No offense to you dedicated Serentity fans, if Serenity cracks 40 million, I'd be shocked. There might have been a wider appeal if they didn't release any of the dialog in the trailer.

    The real problem is that the public is too lazy to actually do the meaningful research into candidates before electing them. Instead we see a populace willing to be partner in crime with politicians spinning doomsday stories over their opponents grainy pictures in a million dollar commercial marathon. If we made a commitment to be responsible citizens, it wouldn't matter how many dollars were committed to candidate A's campaign coffers. This bribery problem... it falls on your own doorstep.

    I would argue that spending billions on space exploration is a poor utilization of resources for "advancing science and society".

    And if I were a Vulcan, I wouldn't celebrate when the Red Sox came back to beat the Yankees. But its the element of humanity that captures the public's imagination.
        Truthfully, the money poured into the space program would probably be better spent on social projects that have a major impact on the quality of life for large bodies of needy people. But NASA helps fulfill a human need to step beyond ourselves. Without humans in the mix, what does that leave us with?

    I think they've got the second level and beyond messed up. To me, it seems if you were on a bunch of smaller lists instead of bigger lists, you have a larger market share with that person. I have a couple accounts, one where I have sn's I have no idea who they belong to anymore... and another smaller buddy list with people I care about.

    Our fab class talked about how incredably hard it is to align wafers fabbed seperately... for instance where uneven thermal expansion across the wafer warps chips just enough so that to accurately connect them, you would need huge bridge points. Even if you were able to align one (say at the center of each wafer), the different process steps for each wafer means neighboring chips will be expand differently when exposed to heat... so as you move away from the center the alignment becomes more and more out of whack.
