  1. Re:Block the Class C on A Myspace Lockdown - Is It Possible? · · Score: 1

Are you kidding me? As a high school student, I can inform you that even the most computer-illiterate people know about the various proxies used to get to myspace/facebook/whatever they want to get to. Anyone can type in a URL--in fact, when I had my personal server running with a PHProxy, I saw it jump from 3 users a day (certain periods) to almost constant use during the school day, as people passed around the URL. Funny you mention the SSH proxy: That's what I do now, and it works really well. I track who is doing what, give everyone their own account, AND get 100% of the pages to work. Not only that, but it's substantially harder to set up putty and your browser than it is to just type in a URL.

I'll second the trauma center motion. I'm not much for console games anymore, preferring to stick to my PC, but my little brother got a Wii for Christmas. I have been battling him ever since for control of the Wiimote so I could play Trauma Center. It's one game that really relies upon the accuracy of the Wiimote as a pointer and, I think, shows off the technology damned well.

Yeah, I agree. As a CS Server Admin this really pisses me off -- not because they are putting ads in game, necessarily, but because I am already paying $32 every month for my two servers. Why in the hell should Valve be able to make money off of that as well? I figure someone will figure how to mod the game to remove the ads, and I will be all for that -- I'll install that mod as soon as it comes out.

That's where the students do a good job, however. Sure, students talk, so they know what classes are good and which ones aren't. My high school physics class, for instance, was always recommended because it was difficult but taught you so much. Same with the classes taught by the high-level math teacher. While the majority of information that you learn in high school will be lost, those who are interested in mathematics/science will enjoy the classes and realize the real-world applications. Unfortunately, I am afraid that my high school may be a unique one insofar as the high quality of the higher level math and science teachers. When I talk to students from other schools, they express frustration at their school's lackluster programs.

That's not the argument though. These students are saying their IP rights are being violated without their consent, not that they are being violated after signing a paper. Had they signed a contract at the start of the year stating that they agreed to getting their essays checked/stored, then they would have no argument. However, afaik, they have not signed any such document and, as such, have a legit argument in my view.

IANAL either, but it would seem to me that they would be profiting from your IP. Sure, they are only using it to check against, but if you (as the student) don't explicitly allow them use of it, they are still profiting from your IP, whether or not they are profiting off of it insofar as selling copies of it. The bottom line is that schools have to pay for this service, and are paying, in part, to violate their student's IP rights. I don't view this as a way of protecting their IP rights -- if you are an upstanding student, then you will not make your essay available to anyone in any way, and therefore you don't want your IP rights to be violated. If you make your paper available, then you are allowing others to use your IP.

Having started learning how to code last year just by using PHP, I can say that it is a pretty good language to start out with in terms of learning the basics. The error codes make you learn how to do stuff correctly (insofar as bracketing and whatnot) and allowed me to easily branch out. The most beneficial thing I did while learning PHP, however, was to find someone to partner with on a project. Then they were able to smack me upside the head when I did something incorrectly, and showed me a few cool tips. I have since been able to move on and learn other languages at a decent pace. I can't say it is the best language to learn first, but it isn't the worst choice (I had experimented with different languages before, to no advail)

Part of the problem with comparing the XBox and the Revolution prices is the fact that they are 2 completely different business models. While Microsoft is content with losing money on their hardware and gaining it back on software, I would presume Nintendo wouldn't have that same 'comfort zone' with their pricing. That being said, I would agree that the best price for this would be around $150... Maybe even $125...

As a student in the Indiana Public Education program, I can't wait for this. I have long helped teachers out with computer problems and have even used knoppix to fix problems deemed 'unfixable' by our support staff. Now I can't wait to see how much more stable my life will be when people can't fsck everything up. But, however nice this is, the main problem in my school, as I see it, isn't the number of computers, but how they are used. Constantly broken machines that won't let you print to certain printers and teachers who barely know how to turn the computer on are a humongous drawback. On top of that, our school corporation is just NOW getting on track with Windows, teaching everyone how to do simple things like delete programs (my mother is a 3rd grade school teacher and even her kids install programs on the computers without her knowledge). I simply hope they spend much more money teaching the teachers how to use the computers.... But hey, now instead of getting people calling me about Blue Screens of Death, I get to answer questions about Kernel Panic!
