  1. Old Games Machine? on Firefox to Drop Pre-Windows 2000 Support · · Score: 1

Am I the only one with an old win 98 games machine - I only really use it for my older games (own about 200 of them) but sometimes its proved useful to be able to browse the web on it, especially when downloading updates for games etc - It also save booting up my main machine.

To lose decent browser support for it would be really annoying.

    Still always Opera I guess.

Some of the newer Fabia or Octavia models are even faster - take the rally Octavia (VII I think?). Most taxi drivers seem to drive Octavias in the uk - they're cheap and reliable motors. Nothing like the original Skodas.

WinXP is laid out all screwy too, makes it really hard to configure or use. I don't think it's any more stable either. Also, the "eye candy" you refer to is absolutely garish - it's like they got a retarded monkey to try to imitate Mac OSX. First thing I did on my work computer (which is XP unfortunately) was switch the style to classic to save my eyes and some of my sanity.

    - where can I swap a standard XP CD for this. I also don't want real, QT or any other bloated media player that thinks it going to do everything for me. I like media player classic (find it on sourceforge) - Its quick to load, and nippy. If I want playlists I use winamp. I dont want the rest of this junk. If I build a PC for friends and families I'll also recommend this version - Anything that by default acquires a license for my music is something I do NOT want and will do anything to avoid.

I have my PC for years - I just upgrade as I can afford to (which isn't much or often). A Mac can't be kept reasonably update for £100 (~$175) a year - a PC can. If I move completely over to Linux (as I've been planning for about 5 years - damn games) then it would probably cost even less. Don't get me wrong OSX is nice but I can't afford even a quarter of a Mac Mini let alone anything else.

The blackice didn't seem to be doing anything (application control was turned off) and the antivirus had stopped updating - which was why I got asked to look at it. The problem was all spyware - The family had no idea what it was - Of course with a PC with XP and no service packs installed you can guess how many hundreds of piece of spyware/virii were installed. I tried to talk them into Firefox, Zonealarm/Kerio Firewall and AVG Free/ClamWin Antivirus but I just couldn't find a way to expain it so they understood and would accept. In the end I just cleared the spyware (mostly manually - Ad-aware, SB-S&D and MS Antispyware just wouldn't completely clear it) and viruses. Installed XP SP2 and all the updates. Did a full inoculate with SB-S&D and spywareblaster. Bet I'll get another call in 6 months to a year!
