oh gawd, more than half the power where I live and the industrial park where I work comes from nuclear (I work in computer VAR but the buildings next to me do such things as casting and extrusions). I'm picturing myself and everyone working within two miles doing things like beating red hot horseshoes on an anvil if we ditch nuclear. not even remotely an option if we wish to not be third world craphole.
sick pervert, normal people would only find the topside and cockpit of the shuttle arousing, but here you are looking at the underbelly and engine bells and getting off. shameful.
and the Norseman's codes shall possess and dominate the workbench ciphering apparatus for all peoples in that year,
(pauses to snort more volcanic fumes)
and the Orders of the Red Whorl and the Arch of Blueness shall claim the deceived followers from the once-righteous wealthy African merchant, for his falling into great sin, of confounding the Portal of Knowledge with his evil Unification spell that bends the eyesight and hinders the labors of man
stressing tissues can cause mutations, and sometime result in cancer, For two examples, oxygen deprivation and heating can result in cancer. Increased incidence of eye and testicular cancer have been noted in those that work with high power microwave transmitters. Yes, this is a very different situation than cell phone use, but still it isn't accurate to say only ionizing radiation can cause cancer.
patents on physical things are great, they give incentive to bring things to market. also, other companies can make the things google patents, they'll just pay 10% or so royalty. whoop de doo. And you can legally build the google-patented thing for your own amusement and not owe google one cent.
see, there you go with your carbon chauvinism again, only knowing the organic nonlinear phosphazenes, while nonlinear inorganic ones such as with sulfur exist. Information storage can be a simple matter of substituting those "R"s the polymer chemists so love to put in their diagrams with some variety of other things. Worth mentioning too that many metal oxides can form nonlinear polymers including cyclical patterns. A life form based on such things might exist in conditions we would think of as totally hostile to life.
As for politeness, slashdot is more fun without too much of it. Rather like the more lively debates in the UK legislature.
sadly, this boy will be able to circumvent Darwin by selling his left and right nut for the iPad 4 and 5; the gonads will be used to breed more greedy little stupid shits.
skimmed some papers on PCM on the web, looks like their goals are to get the memory to 100 million writes and 10 years retention of data; very similar issues to flash, it seems
utter rubbish, several atoms and also certain groups of atoms can form chained, non-linear complex structures, such as phosphazenes. Your carbon chauvinism based on sample size of one is showing.
I have Nvidia, my advice is to do the Ubuntu->Xubuntu (xfce4 desktop on fwm4 window manager) changeover, and then plan your migration to another distro. Things have worked much better for me, no weird freezes or "blackouts". Now I just have to decide what my next distro is, maybe Debian or Arch
hah, bad news for you, Windows UI and the office suite UI have changed, more suck, more bloat, more cycle-stealing unnecessary eye candy, harder to find necessary functions. In fact, i think that's exactly what drives the KDE and GNOME teams now, getting into the billy-bloatware groove. Fuck them all, several nice lightweight window managers out there, choose a distro that puts thought into integrating well with one.
nonsense, like any other major iinux distro, you can put whatever desktop manager you like on Ubuntu, plenty of lightweight ones to choose. Or run it with no window manager. Just as you can put a bloated window manager on any major open source desktop OS, from FreeBSD to Gentoo.
really? Some decline in sales by the major forecasters is predicted by Forrester and others in desktop sales because of tablets, but 15 million units in 2015 compared to 18 now is still huge and hardly a "death". When I'm at a desk, a desktop is the nicest thing. I have laptop and a cell phone with fold out screen, but that's not how I prefer to work. Give me my quad core desktop monster with 8G of RAM any day of the week.
sad new for you, California now gets 60% of its energy from natural gas, up from 40% in just 3 short years. Fossil fuels are one viable alternative to nuclear, California chose that. Enjoy your fossil fuel future.
You should educate yourself with google. Your german wind farms don't produce that peak output for even 20% of the time. A nuclear plant runs 18 to 24 months between refueling.
That's laughable, as Monsanto has a manufacturing plant in Antwerp and office in Belgium and its experimental Franc-Waret farms south of Belgium were found to have contaminated crops for many kilometers. They are busy getting your government lawmakers in their pockets.
tornadoes don't care where the people are. the most violent tornadoes, the most numerous tornadoes, weren't this year. No unusual factors in play at all. No increase in tornado severity or number due to any climatic or weather related change over the last century. That is the bullshit you are shoveling. There is no increased severity of flooding, nor drought, nor hailstorms, nor blizzards over the past century.

ISS small, roughly 51 meters by 21 meter diameter; the truss is long, 109 meters wide

they do 'orbit", but those quantum mechanical "orbitals" are not like any kind of planetary trajectories. Deeply funky shit, no?
ooo, snide Perl 6 remark would go here if I were immature

you're lucky, you should see what the victims of the U.S. educational system write

/me hangs head in shame over his twin 3.6GHz dual core Xenon workstation

I'm all for astrobiology, and there are many missions in progress and more planned to supply the field with hard facts and gain sample sizes.

the silly pointless simulations of the article, based on nothing but speculation and assumption and data gathering with a sample size of zero
no more or less idiotic than this bias-driven modeling of speculation based on assumption which has no bearing whatsoever on reality.
