    You have a misconception about The Plague. killed two million per year at the most. And you'd have to count all victims in all three outbreaks centuries apart to reach the total of 137 million.

    the flu has done worse than that for one year, and has done worse for total victims.

    travelers slaughtered for food is better than millions slaughtered for resources?

    check your facts, the offspring from incestuous relationships usually don't have serious congenital defects though the probability is higher; in some cultures there were subcultures which practiced incest for generations without problems or higher incidence of spontaneous abortions.     why would you think a user-space app stack running on a microkernel can't be hacked or crashed? No one cares if the microkernel is still up when the money-moving database is compromised. there are monolithic OS with security as the primary design goal, and plenty with robustness as primary design goal (100% uptime over years is nothing new to client's datacenters where I work, NSK & OS/390 for example)

    but those useable systems had to leave many parts of the Mach architecture behind (that's why they're not microkernel OS)

    we're back to Minix-3 and HURD as the only two real-world general purpose examples, Minix is interesting and has potential, but HURD is just unfinished science project

    not the best OS ever for general desktop and server use, realtime OS have limitations of what they can guarantee. Why Andy T. even bothers to mention all those embedded and military realtime OS as somehow bolstering his case is beyond me. For any claim of general purpose there's HURD and MINIX-3, and that about says it all.
