Did Hal actually USE the ring for anything interesting? I wouldn't say I'm the biggest fan, but I do have a few of the comics. I don't think a lot of people got that the rings power had to do with imagination, and that Hal's true power wasn't just the ring, but that he used it in such inventive ways. Since that time it seems like he's been reduced to shooting some green death ray from his ring and such instead of problem solving.
I was initially interested in the movie, but had the feeling it wouldn't touch on the theme of using imagination. From the trailers I didn't get that impression either.
He did at least one thing that I thought was pretty clever/funny with the ring, but I don't want to spoil it. It was more than just shooting green lasers.
I've been a Green Lantern fan for about 20 years. I can still remember going through the white boxes at the comic book store trying to find any issue that I missed. I liked the movie for what it was. They had to skim and condense many things from the GL lore, but explaining a history that begins at the big bang can really eat into the 2 hours that people will sit through a movie. The OP mentions that the GL Corps is played up to be a big deal and OA as being awesome as bad things. These are freaking awesome things, this isn't the Rascals club house. The cool part about Green Lantern is that imagination and will power can be used to do amazing things. Realizing this as a young geek reading comics was a huge deal for me and many others.
To summarize, I thought the movie was fun enough for your average summer movie goer and did better than expected from the POV of a long time GL fan. I would have liked some more inside type of stuff thrown in (even a mention of Alan Scott), but it was still pretty freaking cool hearing the Oath in a movie.
Seriously - it didn't cross the minds of 12 engineers that everyone who uses facebook has hated every single one of the UI changes - and they still continue to do it?
The fact that they still have millions of users and continue to grow, lends one to believe that not everyone hates their updates. People don't like change and more than that they are terrible at imagining how they will use a something that is vastly different that what they currently do. A good business is able to derive a set of features from their customer's wants, and then design a way to meet those wants. Even when the customer may balk at first. If Facebook stayed with their original UI, someone else would have come into the market and replaced them.
Give them admin access to machines on the dev network, but not on the production side. Development shouldn't happen on the production network. Many developers don't realize that when on the production network they can take down the entire network by downloading some crazy app or better yet screwing up code that floods the network. Setup a lab network behind a firewall, then allow ssh traffic and maybe a few other ports to allow controlled remote access. If the developers screw something up, it just takes down their lab network.
I wouldn't think that they need to identify everyone in the crowd. But if 1 or 2 faces appear to be someone the might blow up the place, I'm pretty sure the police can make time to talk to them.
Information Security hates dual boot. You would need to update two different systems. Since most updates are pushed, the OS that doesn't get booted will be deficient.
The problem is you need off-site storage. RAID doesn't matter if your house burns down. To do this well, you'll need to buy a total of three drives. One to use for your system, one to be stored in a safe deposit box, and one to be used in transit.
But you couldn't use the rating feature correctly. What do you rate a movie she loved but you hated? This leads to obvious problems when Netflix suggests movies to you. Which is one of the best features for us, since we don't keep up with movies as they come out. My wife and I don't have scour all of the new movies and read their descriptions because the ones we are more likely to like are suggested to us.
Why would they need to update their computers? Most of the uses for computers for both the Real Estate industry and lawyers are e-mail and document processing. These people aren't compiling code or playing video games. Why would they need more then enough horsepower, plus have to take the time to learn something new?
If Walmart can track everything I buy and create a profile, I would assume the gov't could as well. I would think controlling our border includes knowing who comes in and out, and if we have info on that person we should use it. A rating is the easiest way to standardize information like this across thousands of workers. Would you rather a small summary be written and each guard makes their own decision?
I have a network that can't touch the Internet. So it takes for ever to install software because I have to track down all dependencies. If a program needs a dependency it should tell me what it is and where to get it. I shouldn't have to search all over rpmfind or other search engines to install one piece of software.
Don't even get me started on updating the OS. Someone needs to package it all together and make it a simple download or have something similar to WSUS. Red Hat has one, but the offline version costs a ton.
I had no idea pirate movies were so popular I must really be out of mainstream culture!! I knew Johnny Depp had made a few sequels of "Pirates of the Caribbean", but I didn't realize it was in the millions. If Hollywood can keep producing these things I say go for it. But one thing that puzzles me is if Pirate movies are so popular why haven't eye patches come into style. My wife is certainly looking forward to that. She hates having to wear that glass eye.
This would piss me off if I had to do it everytime I had to buy something. I already hate the process of buying big ticket items, but if I had to haggle and waste more time, I'd buy even less. I understand having to do it with something like a house which is relatively hard to set a price on, but even for cars I like places that give me what I want at a price I want to pay without having haggle.
Superman does have weaknesses, which make him all the more interesting. They may not be physical, but he has man mentally. He tries to not be the judge and jury, but how could you not want to when you've seen so much destruction? No matter what happens he can't solve the world's problems, he can't save everyone. And a big question is should he? When should he let the people start protecting themselves. When do they become too reliant on Superman and stop progressing as a race? Recently there was a great series from Lex Luthor's POV. It has some really interesting subjects.
I've read some articles on this movie and I know one question they ask is "Does the world need a Superman?" I think that angle could be really interesting.
If they don't protect the copyright it could become null. I'm not exaclty sure on how this works, but if you don't protect your copyright it's hard to prove in a court if some one uses it for other purposes. For example if another company used it and sent it's proceeds to N. Korea.

What would be great is to get a few geeks in DC. If anyone wants to run, I'll vote for you.
I think real innovation is what hurts PC sales. I use a Win 2k machine w/ 233 Mhz and 128 mb of RAM at home for wireless web surfing, and it does everything I need to do (I'm not a gamer). Nothing that really matters to me has come out lately that makes me need to upgrade my home machine.
Win 2000 is a fine OS, and works well for normal use. If they come up with something truely new and innovative I may upgrade, but not until then.

They are in Hawaii, why would they be watching TV?

How do we know we're not the one's being simulated?

Don't those soldiers choose to sign up. I haven't seen a baby yet choose to be ripped from a womb.
If I patent my DNA, can I sue if police if they try to use my DNA against me in an investigation?
Next they need to bring back Sliders. And not the Sci-Fi channel version which sucked. But the original, that would be a good day.
It was way cool of those guys to answer those questions. Are those guys the biggest stars that have been on Slashdot?
Everyone gets mad at Microsoft for bundling more products together, but it's obvious most people are too lazy/uneducated to install this type of s/w.

I agree, if it was something more like a breakfast item I'd try it. Maybe we can convince Germany to Open Source their beer. That would be a good day.
