The majority of laptops we recover have been reformatted - The thief steals a laptop, then reinstalls a pirated version of XP on it, in order to get past the password prompt. While we don't have a 'focus group of thieves' this suggests anything password protected in the cloud would be safe, as the thief wouldn't be able to get at it. More than likely, a stolen "cloudbook" would just be thrown away...

I know this thread is mostly about movies, but I'm going to chime in on television. For me, this is where some of the biggest improvements have happened. The visuals we've been enjoying in BSG, Caprica, V, Enterprise - None of them hold a candle to the FX in the originals. Heck even animated dinosaurs on the Discovery Channel are very impressive to look at. Of course I realize that if we got an episode of DS9 full of space dogfighting we knew that that next week's episode was going to occur entirely in Quark's or on a baseball field - But nevertheless it was impressive.

I work for a company that, amongst other things, recovers thousands of stolen laptops each year. Many many of our consumer customers have no backups whatsoever and frequently call is repeatedly and desperately, hoping we've recovered their laptop so they can get back their baby pictures or term papers or music collection... The consumer market alone is ripe for a pure-cloud solution if for no other reason than the fact that Joe Average can not or will not back up their data.

As a result, the politicians pander to that electorate. If voters didn't matter, you wouldn't hear and see this sort of thing.

Anybody know why it seems like we've responded with a much greater response this time round?

The reasons are many, and varied, but largely it comes down to "cable news" and the 24-hour news cycle. Cable news now has to both increase ratings and run many more stories. One way they can deal with this pressure is to discuss an issue over and over again up to a fever pitch, leaving Ma and Pa Kettle terrified. This didn't used to happen, back when the message was 'keep calm and carry on.'

The 24-hour news cycle further complicates matters by frightening politicians into thinking they'll be out of a job if they come down on the side of common sense, as opposed to fear mongering and security theatre. For example, imagine if a politician were to come down against junk fondling and then some brown guy were to smuggle some firecrackers on board a plane. The cable news networks would flay that politician alive in endless segments aired over and over again...

It's the dirty little secret that the TSA doesn't want you to know: Bombs carried into the passenger cabin would likely be ineffective in bringing down a modern airliner.

The "underwear bomber" wouldn't have succeeded (source: http://www.nowpublic.com/world/boeing-747-exlposion-test-video-shows-underwear-bomber-failure-2589249.html ).

In 1994, Ramzi Yousef set off a bomb on Philippine Airlines Flight 434 it failed to bring down the aircraft (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_Airlines_Flight_434 ).

Is it a good idea to keep bombs off planes? Absolutely - But planes are remarkably resilient. There's a reason a 737 costs $75M. They're incredibly well engineered.

It's similar to mailing yourself a packet of confidential papers as opposed to hanging onto the papers yourself.
