i mod the parent insightful or the very least interesting...
many years ago when i was using win98 i would always set folder options to NOT hide file extensions and it still hides that second extension, i had what looked like an ordinary bitmap file file_name.bmp but i clicked on it to open it and bam! its true colors show up and it disappears completely even with show all files enabled (file_name.bmp.js) shows for a second and its gone, so i fdisk windows off and reinstall since anti-virus did not find anything and that looked too fishy to be innocent, that taught me no not click on a file to open it, always open a graphics editor/viewer and use file > open to open them then if something is wrong the graphics app will complain if something is wrong with the file.
fixed it, rm -r/home//.openoffice.org/* and re-started openoffice writer, i dont know why that fixed it, could be a corrupt or old/outdated xml config file?
get some thermite, glue it to the top of your harddrive with a fuse connected to the cover on your PC case, if not opened properly the harddrive melts...
i found an annoying bug, if i make a mistake and want to use the backspace key swriter does nothing, the delete key does nothing, the arrow keys do not navigate, even h j k l (vim style) does nothing, i have a USB keyboard on linux and usbhid is loaded, all other applications work fine with these keys, whats the deal Lucille? i am sure there is a solution somewhere.
isnt a daily podcast of LKML a bit much? i would error on the conservative side and recommend a podcast that covered only the more significant updates, really who wants to hear every little update to every little device kernel driver/module & nitpicked flaw, get to the big juicy stuff that makes Linux history and grabs hardware vendors and (users whom waiting for months and years to get in-kernel support) attention. once a week or once or twice a month is plenty, not to be raining on anyone's parade but after the "new" wears off you dont want to get burnt out on making podcasts of every trivial update to the kenrel. good idea though i will listen when the slashdot effect wears off (let your servers cool down)...
while i do agree with the early posters suggesting making OSs to be secure and impervious to viruses and other misc. malware and trojans, but knowing the governments track record of poking their nose in to places it does not belong = invasion of privacy when its not warranted i would prefer to use an OS that is not vulnerable to the virus du jour.
i agree! winXP & product activation was enough to force me to abandon windows, even some Linux desktop environments are getting to be bloated/complicated resource hogs!, (are you listening KDE developers?) when i can no longer roll my own kde desktop. (cmake sucks!) kde-3.5.x is decent but kde-4.x is just a bloated resource hogging eye candy. i can see i will abandon kde, i have not liked gnome for a long time either, i prefer distros like Arch, Gentoo or Slackware where i have better control over what gets installed and if i dont like the pre-compiled binaries that come with it i can rebuild them with the parameters i prefer, i guess i am going to even abandon xorg and X dependent apps too and stick with console ncurses based apps like lynx for web browsing, sc for spreadsheets, vi for text...

is a good combination for running anything windows, it seems to rein in the evilness that microsoft put in to windows. it basically reduced windows from being an OS that wont play nice with other OSs to just an app that is owned by Linux & VBox...
1. but but but the mass media whores need something to sensationalize.
2. the government needs another excuse to spend billions of tax dollars.
A. this flu story is just another load of bullcrap shoved in front of the clueless television zombies that buy everything that is broadcast in front of them, its no worse than any other flu bug that goes around every year...
lets see, i been using computers for over 10 years now, i use slackware i know after i install windows it will write to the mbr, boot a slackware install cd point it to your slackware install on the harddrive root=/dev/sda5 rdinit =read-only then it boots your installed system then run/sbin/lilo and BAM! right back on to the MBR is your linux boot loader, and yes i did select the correct disk partition for windows...
this is not a case of PEBKAC it is a case of microsoft not giving a damn because they are the 800 pound gorilla on the block...
so fuck microsoft, i wont ever waste any more time or money with their product on my good PCs, i have a PC sitting in the back of the office with XP on it, some junk second hand PC i picked up for almost nothing, i dont leave it connected to the net because i know what a completely vulnerable piece of crap it is...
in reply to all that think i am incompetent, horseshit on you! i been using computers for 12 years now i sure as fucking hell know what in the i am doing!!!
the last time i tried winxp (i doubt 7 will be any nicer) i made a ntfs disk partition with cfdisk while running linux on the first primary partition (/dev/sda1) 20 gigs, i rebooted with the XP disk, and it wanted to format the ntfs partition (/dev/sda1) but when i finished the installation and booted XP it completely wiped every partition on that disk which is a 500 gig disk with several partitions & another OS & lots of data on it all gone, i took that XP disk and run it through a shredder and wiped XP off that disk and restored my partitions & OS from my backup drive, fuck microsoft and the OS they rode in on if they can not play nicely with other OSs i dont want anything to do with them anymore...

you can update the text on a computer a lot quicker and cheaper than redistributing new text books made from paper.

i bet it works better when both parties are awake to do it.
since most all Linux distros can be downloaded anonymously for free from many servers/mirrors around the world there is no way of knowing for sure...

my only mistake was trusting that xp install disk to do what i instructed it to do, never again.
