    the common denominator in all this is MS-Windows, get rid of windows (if possible) and you will be much better off with an immunity from this sort of infection, use some variation of *nix (BSD of Linux) and as others in this article commented using AddBlock & NoScript extensions on Firefox is your best bet at stopping this sort of thing...

    with NoScript the use of FlashBlock is redundant, NoScript blocks all plugins (not just flash)...

    when popular Linux distros get released there is no way in hell the servers can keep up with users wanting the new distro that just got released, and BitTorrent is the only way to get a copy, not all BitTorrent users are downloading music & video. and not all music & video is copywrite infringement, and how dare the ISPs tell customers how they use the bandwidth they are paying for!!!

    i hope the FCC accepts and enforces this petition...

    i did a clean install of Slackware-12 without debus, without HAL and without udev, and built a custom kernel (2.6.23) trimming the fat (removing unneeded features & removing unneeded hardware support) and built most of it as modules except for filesystem support (ext3) which was built in to the kernel itself making an initrd unnecessary, and my system boots up in about 10 to 12 seconds, i did not time it with a fancy chronograph but i did watch it boot while keeping a close eye on a large wallclock...

    the only thing i have to do without debus, hal & udev is mount removable drives manually (the old fashioned way)

    try something other than debian or ubuntu or just as long as it is not debian based then, maybe slackware or if you feel like doing some work Crux is a good distro that forces all users to build their own kernel and has a ports system similar to gentoo without all the gentoo annoyances like extensive USE flags (already configured for i686)...
